Chapter 4

The necklace was gone.

I checked the drawer again, trembling hands rifling through scarves, pouches, and little boxes. Nothing. My chest tightened, panic creeping through me like icy water.

No. No, no—it had to be here.

I overturned the entire vanity, then it hit me.

Xavier.

Barefoot, still in my robe, I rushed out of the bedroom, cold floor biting at my feet, and found him at the dining table, sipping black coffee, flipping through files as if the world hadn’t just shifted.

“Xavier,” I said, voice breaking already, “where’s my necklace? The silver one with the black stone. The velvet box one.”

He didn’t look up. “Oh, that? Gave it to Juliette. She looked good in it. She’s wearing it in France.”

I blinked. “You gave it to Juliette?”

“Relax,” he said, flipping a page. “You weren’t wearing it.”

“It was mine,” I said quietly, the words tight in my chest. “You didn’t even ask.”

Finally, he looked at me, sighing as though I were a burden. “Liana. Be real. You probably bought it with my card anyway. What’s yours is mine, right? Why make this a thing?”

“No,” I snapped, hurt burning through me. “I bought it with my own money. Money I earned—on my own.”

His brow lifted slightly. “Doing what?”

“I’ve been designing again,” I said, voice trembling. “Freelance, quiet jobs. I’ve been saving for five years. That necklace… it was the first thing I bought for myself in a long time.”

Xavier scoffed. “Designing? What, aprons and pillowcases?”

I stepped back.

“You don’t know me at all anymore, do you?”

“You’re being dramatic,” he muttered. “It’s just a necklace. I’ll get you a new one.”

“It was limited edition,” I whispered. “I was going to wear it today. A fashion show—wanted to feel like myself again, even for one day.”

Xavier laughed, sharp and cutting. “You? A fashion show?” He shook his head. “Liana, let’s be honest. You’ll be laughed at.”

I froze.

“You’re not that woman anymore,” he continued, flat, as if stating a fact long accepted. “You belong here, in this house, apron on, routines running. Juliette? She belongs on runways, in France, with people who matter.”

He stood, gathered his folder, and moved toward the door.

“Don’t go to that show,” he said over his shoulder. “You’ll embarrass yourself. And the packing—I told you to do it, right? Make sure nothing’s forgotten.”

He left.

I stood there, motionless. No tears. Only a strange, smoldering quiet in my chest. Not sadness, not heartbreak—just fury. Fury at the way I had let myself shrink. Fury at how they didn’t need to raise their voices to crush me. Fury at twenty years spent giving pieces of myself until nothing remained but obligations and silence.

I sat on the edge of the bed, surveying our curated little cage—the walls I decorated, the sheets I washed, the photo frames now empty of memory, holding only proof that I had once existed beside him.

I should have done this sooner.

I should have loved myself sooner.

For twenty years, I loved a man who didn’t see me. Served a family that never said thank you. Chose quiet over conflict, sacrifice over self.

And what did it get me? Nothing.

I stood.

Pulled out the dress I had planned for the show—the one Xavier called “too loud.” Wore it proudly. Styled my hair the way I liked. Applied lipstick he once said made me “look too old to matter.”

Then I left. They wouldn’t notice anyway.

I hailed a cab and gave the gallery’s address.

The assistant greeted me warmly. “We’re ready. You’ll look beautiful.”

I stepped before the camera.

The photographer adjusted the lens. “Are you sure you want these to look like bridal portraits… alone?”

I nodded. “I don’t have a husband.”

He began shooting. With every click, I felt lighter, as if shedding layers of someone else’s expectations.

I remembered Xavier’s old words, the ones that had once held me captive:

“Liana, I know Juliette is a star, but she’ll never want someone like me. You? You’ll stay. You’ll care. You’ll be my peace.”

He promised the best life. He gave me a kitchen. Gave Juliette everything else.

I stood beneath the soft lights and smiled. A real smile. Not the forced one for guests, not the one for Juliette’s staged generosity.

This one was mine.

I left the studio clutching a single print: me, in the dress I chose, claiming a life I had finally begun to live.

That evening, the house was empty. They were out—celebrating, probably laughing, posting photos I wasn’t in.

I didn’t care.

I opened my laptop. Fingers hovering over the keyboard.

Flight to France—one seat.

I clicked. Booked.

I would go to France—not as a wife or a shadow, not a ghost in someone else’s life.

But as a woman finally chasing her own dream.
