Chapter 1

The house was too quiet. Too clean. Too perfect. I moved through it like a ghost, noticing every polished surface, every stitched curtain, every vase carefully arranged to hide its cracks. For twenty years, I had lived in service to this perfection, a life measured in chores, smiles, and silence.

And yet, something inside me had finally broken.

I picked up the phone and spoke, almost mechanically.

“I want a divorce.”

The words felt strange on my tongue, like a forbidden taste I had been starving for. There was a pause on the other end, then a careful voice: “Are you certain? Twenty years is… a long time.”

I let my eyes drift around the room—my domain, my cage. Lavender-scented sheets, furniture polished until it reflected my face back at me, curtains I had sewn so they would hang just so. Everything was immaculate. But lifeless.

“Yes,” I said, steadier than I thought I could be. “File the papers. I’m leaving this house today.”

I hung up before she could answer, leaving the line buzzing in the quiet.

I sat for a long moment, staring at my reflection. No tears yet. Just the hollow ache of realizing that all these years, I had existed only for others, never for myself.

And then I remembered.

The evening it all came crashing down—the night I realized I couldn’t go on pretending. I had spent hours in the kitchen, cooking his favorite pasta, wearing a dress I hadn’t touched in years. I hoped he would notice. I hoped he might remember the promises of a life together—France, adventure, celebration.

He didn’t.

“France?” His laugh was sharp, without warmth. “Why bother? You’re not young anymore. Let’s skip the nonsense.”

I swallowed, trying to hold my voice steady. “You promised. Twenty years ago. You said we’d go when things were better. We’d celebrate.”

Xavier’s eyes stayed on his laptop. “With what money? Yours? Oh right, you have none of your own.”

I opened my mouth, tried to argue, but the words choked me. I only managed, “Can’t it just be… a gift?”

“Gift?” He snapped. “You stay home. That’s it. I earn. You lounge in comfort and complain about a vacation.”

Job. His voice made it sound like a cruel joke. Motherhood, marriage, keeping a home—they counted for nothing.

“Why can’t you be like Juliette?” he continued. “Independent, successful, traveling without anyone, making her own life.”

Juliette. The orphan my parents had taken in when I was fifteen. The one who always had what I never did: attention, praise, freedom.

Before I could answer, my father appeared, calm, detached. “She’s right. Juliette is smart, knows her worth. You… sometimes I wonder if keeping you here was the mistake.”

And then I saw it.

Xavier had left his laptop open. I wasn’t looking for it, but the subject line made my heart stop:

France – Wedding Confirmation.

I clicked.

Inside, a flawless itinerary—gold accents, champagne menus, venue details.

A wedding. In France. Xavier and Juliette.

The guest list: my father. My son. His wife. My family.

Everyone… except me.

They didn’t just exclude me—they had made me invisible.

A voice thundered from the other room. “Liana!”

Before I could steady myself, something hit me—a shirt, crumpled and accusing.

“You call this doing your job?” he barked. “Look at this! How do you manage to ruin even this?”
