Forever yours, My Wife
Chapter 2
JAMES POV
I woke up feeling refreshed and grateful. Sophia had accepted my apology last night, and I was relieved that we were okay. As I got ready for work, Sophia came into the bathroom, smiling at me in the mirror.
"Hey, good morning," she said, her voice cheerful.
I smiled back, feeling a sense of normalcy. "Hey, good morning. How are you?"
Sophia shrugged. "I'm good. Just getting ready for work."
I nodded, tying my tie. "Yeah, me too. I'm glad we talked last night."
Sophia nodded, her eyes sparkling. "Me too. I'm glad we're okay."
I felt a sense of gratitude towards her. She had every right to be angry, but instead, she was forgiving and understanding.
As we headed to the kitchen for breakfast, Sophia chatted about her day ahead, and I listened intently. We talked about our plans for the weekend, and I mentioned a new restaurant I wanted to try.
Sophia's eyes lit up. "That sounds great! I'd love to try it with you."
I smiled, feeling happy that we were back to normal. As we finished up breakfast and headed out the door, I took Sophia's hand.
"Thanks for understanding, Sophia," I said, looking into her eyes. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Sophia smiled, squeezing my hand. "You'll never have to find out.”
As we walked to the car, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Sophia's forgiveness. I knew I didn't deserve it, but I was determined to make it up to her.
When we arrived at the office, Sophia gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before heading to her own desk. I watched her go, feeling a sense of pride and love for my wife.
The day flew by in a blur of meetings and conference calls. But no matter how busy I was, my mind kept wandering back to Sophia and how much I appreciated her.
At lunchtime, I sent her a text. "Hey, beautiful. Want to grab lunch together?"
She responded almost immediately. "I'd love to. Meet you at the café downstairs?"
I smiled, feeling a sense of excitement. It was moments like these that I cherished, just being able to spend time with Sophia and enjoy each other's company.
As we sat down at a quiet table in the café, Sophia reached out and took my hand. "I'm glad we're okay, James," she said, looking into my eyes.
I squeezed her hand. "Me too, Sophia. Me too."
We chatted and laughed together, enjoying our lunch and each other's company. It was a normal, everyday moment, but it felt special to me. I knew that I had almost lost this, almost lost Sophia, and it made me appreciate her even more.
Just as we were enjoying our lunch and each other's company, my phone rang. I hesitated, feeling a sense of unease. I didn't want to answer it, didn't want to disrupt this moment with Sophia.
But Sophia noticed my hesitation. "Go ahead, James. Answer it."
I sighed, feeling a sense of dread. I glanced at the screen and saw Rachel's name flashing. My heart sank.
"Hey, I should take this," I said, getting up from the table.
Sophia nodded, her expression understanding. "Okay, go ahead."
I walked outside, answering the call. "Hey, Rachel. What's up?"
"James, I need to talk to you about something," Rachel said, her voice sounding urgent.
I felt a sense of unease, wondering what she wanted. "What is it?"
"I'll tell you when I see you. Can we meet up later?"
I hesitated, feeling a sense of discomfort. I didn't want to meet up with Rachel, didn't want to get pulled back into whatever drama she had going on.
But I also didn't want to be rude. "Fine, yeah. When and where?"
We made plans to meet up later that day, and I hung up the phone feeling uneasy. I didn't want to go, didn't want to deal with Rachel's drama. But I also didn't want to hurt her, I didn't want to be a jerk.
As I walked back inside, Sophia looked up at me with a questioning expression. "Everything okay?"
I hesitated, not wanting to lie to her. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just Rachel being Rachel."
Sophia's expression turned skeptical. "What does that mean?"
I sighed, feeling a sense of unease. "I don't know, Sophia. I'll tell you later, okay?”
I sat back down at the table, trying to shake off the feeling of unease that had settled over me. I reached out, trying to grab Sophia's hand, but she pulled away.
"Not now, James," she said, her voice cool.
I felt a pang of disappointment, but I tried to understand. "Hey, I'm sorry about that. I know I shouldn't have taken the call."
Sophia sighed, her expression unreadable. "It's not just that, James. It's...I don't know, it feels like you're still tied to her in some way."
I shook my head, trying to reassure her. "I'm not, Sophia. I promise. Rachel is just...a part of my past, that's all."
Sophia looked at me skeptically. "A part of your past that you're still dealing with, apparently."
I felt a surge of frustration, but I tried to stay calm. "Sophia, please. Let's not do this here."
But Sophia just stood up, her eyes flashing. "I need some space, James. Can we talk about this later?"
I nodded, feeling a sense of defeat. "Yeah, of course. I'll talk to you later."
As Sophia walked away, I couldn't help but feel like I was losing her. Like I was still stuck in the past, and it was threatening to destroy my future with the woman I loved.
***********************
I watched Sophia walk away, feeling a sense of unease. I knew I had to make things right with her, but first, I had to deal with Rachel.
I got up from the table, feeling a sense of dread. I didn't want to go to this meeting, didn't want to face Rachel and whatever drama she had brought into my life again.
But I knew I had to. I had to know what she wanted, had to put an end to whatever was going on between us once and for all.
I made my way to the coffee shop where we were supposed to meet, my heart heavy with anticipation.
*******************
I walked into the coffee shop, scanning the room for Rachel. I spotted her in the corner, her face red and puffy from crying. She looked up and saw me, and a fresh wave of tears streamed down her face.
"James," she sobbed, her voice shaking. "I'm so glad you came."
I sat down across from her, feeling a pang of concern. "What's wrong, Rachel? What's going on?"
Rachel sniffled, wiping her nose with a tissue. "It's...it's Alex. He wants to take custody of Emily."
My eyes widened in surprise. Alex was Rachel's ex-boyfriend, and Emily was their two-year-old daughter.
"What? Why?" I asked, trying to process this new information.
Rachel shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "He says I'm an unfit mother, that I'm too selfish and too focused on my career. He wants to take her away from me."
I felt a surge of anger towards Alex. How could he do this to Rachel?
"Rachel, I'm so sorry," I said, reaching out to take her hand. "We'll figure something out, okay? We'll get a lawyer and fight this."
Rachel nodded, her eyes welling up with tears again. "Thank you, James. Just knowing you're here for me makes me feel a little better."
As I sat there, holding Rachel's hand and trying to comfort her, I couldn't help but think of Sophia. I knew I had to tell her about this, and I had to explain why I was here with Rachel. But for now, I just sat there, trying to be a friend to someone who needed me.
