Chapter 3

"Your system has to be wrong," Ryan said, stepping closer to the triage table. "Check the east terrace gate. Claire wouldn't stay in a burning building. She probably took a cab back to our apartment the second the alarm went off."

The emergency officer didn't look up from his screen. "Every guest who passed the perimeter had their hotel key card or wristband scanned. Claire Morgan's access badge was logged at the service elevator bank at 8:31 PM. There is no record of her returning to the ground level."

"Then she walked past without scanning," Ryan insisted, his voice rising over the idle hum of the fire trucks. "She has severe anxiety about fire alarms. She doesn't wait around."

He pulled his phone from his pocket with shaking fingers and dialed her number again.

The line rang once. Twice. Then it clicked directly to automated voicemail.

"See? Her battery probably died," Ryan said, trying to force a dismissive laugh that came out thin and hollow. "She's at home. She has to be."

His thumb hovered over the unread message thread.

For the first time since the alarm had sounded, Ryan tapped open the image Claire had sent him forty minutes earlier.

The photo expanded on his screen.

It wasn't a ground-floor panel taken to manufacture a panic attack. The digital display read *B2* in glowing red text, but the lower half of the buttons were completely swallowed by dense, curling gray smoke. In the bottom corner of the frame, the hem of her cream evening dress was pressed flat against the dark metal floor.

The phone felt suddenly heavy in his grip.

A tall fire captain walked over to the triage station, unbuttoning his heavy turnout coat. His helmet bore the name *Bennett*.

"Captain," the triage officer called out. "We have an unaccounted civilian. Claire Morgan. Architect on the renovation project."

Noah Bennett stopped, his brow pulling down as he looked at the roster tablet. "Claire Morgan? She's the one who dialed 911 directly from inside the service shaft."

Ryan blinked, caught off guard. "She called 911?"

Noah turned his head, his gaze hard and evaluating as he took in Ryan's rumpled tuxedo shirt. "Who are you?"

"I'm her husband," Ryan said, taking a step forward. "Ryan Morgan. Look, Claire has severe trauma from an apartment fire three years ago. When she hears alarms, she overreacts. She gets disoriented and thinks things are worse than they actually are. If she said she was trapped, she might have just been confused in the stairwell."

Noah stared at him for a long, silent beat. He picked up the printed dispatch log from the table and flipped it toward Ryan.

"Your wife gave dispatch her exact location in less than twenty seconds," Noah said, his voice level and ice-cold. "Southwest service shaft, car number three, hung between Basement One and Basement Two. She gave us the direction of the smoke, the spread of the haze, and the elevator's power failure. She didn't sound confused at all."

"She was panicked when she called me," Ryan stammered, feeling the ground slip beneath his feet. "She was hyperventilating into the phone. I thought—"

"She wasn't imagining the smoke," Noah interrupted. "My men are standing in it."

The words hit Ryan with the force of a physical blow. The air caught in his throat, choking off every excuse he had prepared.

Across the cordoned plaza, Sophia stood up from the planter, limping slightly as she approached. "Ryan? What's going on? Did they find Claire?"

Ryan didn't answer. He couldn't tear his eyes away from the hotel's lower service entrance.

A burst of static broke from Noah's shoulder radio.

"Command, this is Rescue Four. We forced the outer hoistway doors on B2. We have the car open."

Noah pressed his lapel mic. "Status on the occupant?"

A pause stretched over the radio, filled only with the heavy hiss of breathing apparatus.

"Civilian is unresponsive. Heavy smoke inhalation. Starting oxygen now. We're bringing her up through the freight ramp."

Ryan's chest seized. He broke into a run before anyone could stop him, pushing past the yellow tape and sprinting toward the concrete ramp on the building's west side.

"Sir! Stay behind the perimeter!" a police officer shouted, but Ryan ignored him.

Two firefighters in soot-covered gear wheeled a heavy gurney up the incline.

Under the glare of the portable work lights, Ryan saw her.

Claire lay flat on the narrow mattress, an oxygen mask strapped tightly over her nose and mouth. Her face, usually so pristine and composed, was smeared with dark soot along her cheekbones and jaw. Her tailored silk dress was torn at the hem and blackened around the edges.

"Claire!" Ryan reached out, his hand trembling as he caught the side of the metal rail. "Claire, can you hear me? I'm right here."

She didn't move. Her eyelashes remained still against her pale skin.

There were no tears on her cheeks. She wasn't trembling, hyperventilating, or reaching out for him to shield her the way she used to whenever a siren went off. She lay completely limp, surrounded by the mechanical hiss of the emergency oxygen tank.

Ryan's eyes dropped to her right hand, resting over her stomach.

Her fingers were curled into a tight, rigid fist. The skin across her palm was covered in angry red blisters where she had burned herself against the metal doors. Clamped firmly inside her charred grip, gleaming under the harsh lights, was her platinum wedding band.

She had taken it off before she lost consciousness.

"Move back, sir," a paramedic ordered, shoving Ryan's shoulder aside to load the gurney into the waiting ambulance. "She's in critical respiratory distress. We need to transport immediately."

The ambulance doors slammed shut, cutting off Ryan's view of her face. The siren screamed to life, tires screeching as the vehicle tore out of the driveway and sped into the street.

Ryan stood on the asphalt, his hands hanging uselessly at his sides. The silence left behind by the departing siren was deafening.

He spun around to face Noah Bennett, who had walked up behind him.

Panic and guilt collided in Ryan's chest, twisting into a desperate, irrational anger.

"Why didn't your team get down there faster?" Ryan demanded, his voice cracking as he reached out toward the chief. "You had forty minutes! Why didn't she tell someone exactly where she was?"

Noah looked at him for several agonizing seconds, his face completely devoid of sympathy.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out the digital incident tablet, and held the transcript directly in front of Ryan's face.

"She did," Noah said flatly.

Noah dragged his finger down the screen, pointing to the final lines of the emergency call log.

"Your wife gave us her exact coordinates at 8:33," Noah said, each word landing like a hammer. "Then she tried to reach you."

Noah tapped the timestamps at the bottom of the record.

"Your wife didn't stop calling you until 8:47," Noah said, his voice dropping into a cutting whisper. "The elevator lost signal at 8:48."
