Chapter 1

I broke off the engagement on my wedding day. My mother-in-law gave me seventeen grand dowry and three pieces of gold. She also emptied her life savings to buy us a wedding house.

At the wedding, my fiancé, David Wagner, took his father's mistress as his mother and asked me to serve her a champagne and paid respect.

“Leah, don't just stand there! Call her Mom and pay respect to her!” David gave me a side look as I stood froze on my place. I looked at the smug smile on that and walked away. To hell with this wedding! Who would want them as in-laws?

“What's gotten into you? You left me in front of those guests. How dare you not giving a face!” David's angry voice came from the phone.

Today is my wedding day. An hour ago, I saw David's name change to Daniel Maynard on the welcome board. I thought the wedding organizers had made a mistake and was about to tell them to fix it right away. When I entered the wedding venue, I saw David's father sitting at the main table with a woman I had only met once.

“David, don't you think that there's a mistake here?” I grabbed David's arm as he was greeting the guests. He turned to me, looking nonchalant.

“A mistake? Isn't this the seat for my parents?” David said indifferently.

“Where's your Mom? Why isn't she here?”

“Julia believes inviting divorced people will bring bad luck. Besides, she's incredibly busy and wouldn't have time to attend anyway, so I didn't bother inviting her.” David said casually. He didn't even bother to address her.

David said his parents divorced when he was two. As a single parent, his mom raised him all by herself. She put him through college and found him a woman to marry. Now on his wedding day, not only did he not invite her, but he also called her bad luck.

“Isn't your Dad also a divorcee?” I argued. I couldn't believe my ears.

“That's different. My father remarried, while she remained a widow. If she were to come to this wedding, she would bring her bad luck and cause us to divorce. That would be fucked up!"

If I hadn't heard it with my own ears, I wouldn't have believed that those words came out of David's own mouth. In my eyes, David was a very honest and caring person. He was very devoted to his mother. He even regularly fed the stray cats in the neighborhood.

The David in front of me was so different from the David I remembered. I even wanted to make sure he wasn't under the spell. But before I could react, I was pushed onto the stage.

“The bride and groom pour champagne to the parents in honor.” The MC's voice echoed throughout the room.

“Mom, thank you for being here today. I’ll toast for you,” David said and poured Julia Maynard a glass of champagne and handed it to her.

This woman was just a mistress in my eyes. When David's mother was pregnant with her second baby, Julia came to her house and made a scene, which caused her to miscarry. She also made a mess at the place where David's mother worked and caused her to lose her job.

“Aren't you a sweet gentlemen, Daniel? You're kind, filial and very considerate. Nothing like his mother who's grumpy and hard to get along with.” Julia raised her glass and took a sip of champagne.

'Daniel? No, that should be David.' I thought. Now I realize that the wedding organizers didn't make a mistake, but David changed his own government name.

“Leah, don't just stand there. Come here and toast for Mom and Dad!” David gave me a tug.

“My dad is the one who paid for this wedding. He said he will reward us with a big mansion after you give birth to a grandchild for the Maynard,” David whispered into my ear as I showed my indifference.

“What about your mom? She deserves to be here,” I turned to David.

“It’s our big day. Can we not talk about her? Mentioning her will only bring bad luck.” David frowned.

“She insisted that we should go to the city hall and get the marriage certificate, if it wasn't for my dad and Julia, we wouldn't be able to get married. Don’t you get it?” David said as he shoved the glass into my hand.

“Honey, why does she just stand there and do nothing? Does she not want to respect us as her in-laws? Is this the nature of our daughter-in-law? An unruly woman.” The mistress glanced at me and smiled wickedly.
