Finding Myself Again Chapter 1

At six that evening, the candles on Noah's cake had melted into crooked blue stumps.

I replaced them.

The roasted chicken went dry beneath the foil, so I carved it, brushed the slices with warm broth, and lowered the oven temperature. The potatoes had been whipped with lactose-free milk because Ethan's stomach could not handle cream. The frosting on the cake contained less sugar than the recipe called for, but I had folded in strawberries so Noah would never know.

At eight, I texted Ethan again.

Are you close? Noah's cake is ready.

The message showed as delivered. No reply.

I stood alone in the dining room, wearing the pale blue dress Noah once said made me look like a princess. Seven paper stars hung from the ceiling. I had cut every one by hand after midnight while Ethan slept beside me with his back turned.

The front door finally opened at ten thirty.

Laughter rushed in before my family did.

Vanessa entered first, bright in a red coat, my son riding on her back. Her eight-year-old, Liam, waved a plastic sword. Ethan came last carrying shopping bags and a giant soda. There was grease on the cuff of his expensive gray coat.

"Surprise," Vanessa sang. "We stole the birthday boy for a real celebration."

Noah slid down, cheeks pink from the cold. "We went on the Thunder Drop twice. Aunt Vanessa screamed louder than Liam."

His eyes passed over the decorations without stopping.

I curled my sore fingers against my skirt. "You could have called."

Ethan put the bags on the counter. "It was spontaneous."

"I was worried."

"My phone died," he said.

It had not. I could see the green light blinking beside his screen.

Vanessa opened one of the bags. The smell of chili oil and fried chicken filled the room.

"Noah, sweetheart, you already had soda?" I asked.

"And hot wings." He grinned. "Aunt Vanessa said birthdays don't need rules."

"Your stomach hurt last time you ate those. Maybe drink some water first. I made—"

His grin vanished. "Why do you always ruin everything?"

The question struck harder because it came in his small, familiar voice.

I glanced at Ethan. I waited for the correction I had given Noah a hundred times: We don't speak to Mom that way.

Ethan only loosened his tie.

"I just don't want you sick," I said.

"I'm not a baby." Noah kicked one of the paper stars that had fallen from the table. "You're so boring. If Aunt Vanessa were my mom, birthdays would actually be fun."

For one terrible second, everyone became still.

I heard the refrigerator hum. My own breath catch high in my chest.

Vanessa touched Noah's hair. Her mouth curved as if she were trying not to smile.

"He's tired," she said.

I looked at Ethan. "Are you going to say anything?"

His face barely changed. Ethan had always been beautiful in a cold way—straight nose, dark eyes, every emotion locked behind clean lines.

"Not tonight, Claire."

"He said he wanted my sister as his mother."

"And you're making his birthday about you."

Heat rushed into my eyes. I lowered my head before anyone could see.

"Of course," I whispered. "I'm sorry."

The apology came automatically. It always did.

They ate fried chicken in the living room. No one touched the dinner I had spent all day preparing. Vanessa kept the room alive with stories about her divorce, her new apartment, the men who had already asked for her number. Even Ethan smiled once.

I stood in the kitchen and scraped untouched potatoes into containers.

A memory rose with the sting of hot foil against my fingers.

Three weeks earlier, Vanessa had returned home with Liam. My parents held a welcome dinner and asked me to cook because Vanessa had "been through enough." I had spent five hours in their kitchen beneath a yellow light that made everything look sickly. A knife slipped while I was chopping rosemary. The blade opened my index finger.

Blood ran over the cutting board, warm and startling.

Mom walked in while I was pressing a towel to it.

"Claire, honestly." She frowned at the ruined herbs. "Must you be so clumsy today? Vanessa is already emotional. Don't make a scene."

I had wanted to say, It hurts.

I wrapped the cut in a paper towel and finished dinner with my hand throbbing inside a rubber glove.

At the table, Dad toasted Vanessa's courage. Noah and Liam fought over who could sit beside her. Ethan listened as she described the night she finally left her husband, his attention fixed on her in a way it had never fixed on me.

I brought out the roast. Mom looked at the uneven slices and sighed.

"Vanessa always had the graceful hands in the family."

Everyone laughed as if it were harmless.

I laughed too.

Now, in my own kitchen, the healing cut split open beneath the foil. A thin line of blood appeared. I watched it gather without feeling it.

After the children showered, I carried clean pajamas and warm towels upstairs. Steam curled beneath the bathroom door. I lifted my hand to knock, then heard Noah's voice.

"Dad, was Aunt Vanessa supposed to marry you?"

My fingers froze against the wood.

Water stopped running.

"Who told you that?" Ethan asked.

"Aunt Vanessa. She said Mom took her place when Grandma and Grandpa made her leave."

My lungs forgot how to open.

That was not what happened. Vanessa had refused the marriage. She had cried, screamed, and begged me to save her. She had called Ethan a human gravestone and said she would rather disappear than marry him.

I had been twenty-two and trained to repair whatever my sister broke.

So I said yes.

Inside the bathroom, Noah asked, "Would you be happier if you married her?"

Silence stretched.

I pressed my fist to my mouth.

"Your mother is reliable," Ethan finally said.

Reliable.

Not loved. Not kind. Not mine.

Noah sighed. "She's still boring."

"She has always been quiet."

They spoke as if I were a piece of furniture just outside the door. Useful. Plain. Unable to hear.

I set the towels on the carpet because my hands had begun to shake. Then I walked downstairs without making a sound.

In the study, I opened the cabinet where our legal papers were kept. Behind Noah's birth certificate lay my registered dietitian license. I had kept it active through online classes taken at two in the morning, after lunches were packed and Ethan's reflux medication was set beside his water.

Next weekend, we were supposed to take a family trip to Lakeside Park. I had been telling myself it could be one final good memory. After that, I would ask Ethan to let me go.

But I still wanted my son.

The thought hurt so badly I bent over the desk.

Noah had wished me gone. Still, my body remembered his newborn weight against my chest. His first fever. The nights I slept sitting up because lying flat made his stomach pain worse. Love did not vanish because it had been wounded.

I slid the license into my purse.

Upstairs, my husband and son laughed at something Vanessa had sent them.

I covered my mouth and cried so quietly that no one came looking.
