Finding Love With the Enemy Chapter 1

“Rogues!”

If I had a nickel every time I wrestled with death, I'd be rich beyond belief.

However, tonight was particularly different, because my heart died, surrounded by the dead and towering forest fires set by these rotten mutts!

Everyone ran to the packhouse for safety, while the warriors dealt with the hoards of rogues spawning from the woods.

Anywhere I looked, these stinking wretched were leaping onto me, and the fight seemed never-ending. I got their claws ripping through my skin, their fangs boring into my flesh, and my blood mixed with theirs, soaking my shirt red.

Five rogues slowly closed in on me, snarling with their dirty smirk and enjoying every bit of the thrill before they mauled me down. With a busted arm and leg, I had nowhere to go, and it scared me to think my death would be this tragic.

My heart ached at the thought of leaving my mate behind. But that pain was nothing compared to what happened next.

Mason, my mate, was running around in the middle of all this chaos, worried to death while searching. I thought he was looking for me. But, the second our gazes met, he merely paused and turned away, shouting, “Kara!”

Right then, my chances of surviving ran off with him as he go rescue his childhood friend.

It wasn’t the first time he chose that girl over me, but this one crushed me entirely. His mate was seconds away from knocking on death’s door and he never even thought of saving me!

Rage rumbled from the depths of my soul. It pumped through my veins and rushed to my head, corrupting my sanity.

The rogues lunged at me at the same time, morphing mid-air as they anticipated to bite, but I grabbed one by the tail and hit the others like baseball.

My arm and leg being broken were forgotten, and I fought tirelessly as if I were a machine that could never feel any pain. Except, I wasn’t, and it was crushing me from the inside while these bastards kept on coming until the darkness finally took me.

I thought I was a goner, and yet I woke up to a blinding light.

I looked around, confused. It seemed so surreal for me to be alive after getting hounded by those rogues.

Then, I saw the withered bouquet of white tulips at my side with a card that said, “Sorry.”

I laughed bitterly and cried. I should be glad for crawling back from the dead but I couldn’t. It sucked to know how little regard, the person who was supposed to be the other half of my soul, had for me. It was sickening.

Later, I found out I had been in a coma for a week. I had a lot of life-threatening injuries. Everyone was certain I wouldn’t make it past the operation, but against all odds, I pulled off a miracle.

Could you believe that? It was a miracle and yet no one was there by my side.

The chief healer advised me to stay for a few more days to recover but I wanted to leave. I’d feel suffocated if I stayed in the ward alone with my thoughts. So, I went home to vent everything out.

I wouldn’t let this slide even if I had to rip Mason a new limb. However, just thinking about it was easier than acting on it.

My feet felt heavier than a boulder as I stood on our doorstep. I could hear them talking from the inside. They sounded so happy and intimate, it bled my heart.

If it was me from the past, I’d take it quietly and pretend none of this hurt me. Well, I wasn’t that girl anymore.

I kicked the door open, sending it crashing against the wall. Kara shot up, screaming, while Mason braced himself for a fight.

“Ella, you’re awake!” He relaxed and started toward me, arms open for a hug.

I scoffed and brushed past him, heading straight for the bar counter. Grabbing a bottle of brandy, I knew I couldn’t face this sober.

As I chugged it down, I caught sight of their guilty faces—like they’d been caught in the act.
