Chapter 3

I sat on the edge of my hotel bed, staring at my phone as if it might bite me. My bandaged hand throbbed in time with my racing heart. Three days had passed since I'd discovered Holden and Elise in our living room, surrounded by mock funeral arrangements for my living parents. Three days of silence from everyone I thought was my friend.

I scrolled through my contacts list, pausing at a name that hadn't crossed my mind in months: Maverick Oliver.

Maverick and I had met at various business functions over the years. Unlike most men in Holden's circle, he'd always treated me with genuine respect. No leering glances. No condescending remarks. Just quiet conversation and thoughtful questions that showed he was actually listening.

My finger hovered over his name. This was desperate. We weren't even friends, just acquaintances who'd had civil conversations at parties. But what choice did I have?

I pressed call before I could change my mind.

"Gabrielle?" His voice was warm with surprise. "This is unexpected."

"Maverick," I whispered, my voice cracking. "I need help."

There was a pause, and I could almost see him straightening, his attention sharpening. "What's happened?"

"I can't... I can't explain over the phone." Tears welled up, threatening to spill. "Could we meet? Please?"

"Of course," he said without hesitation. "Where are you?"

---

The café was tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, far from the social circles where news of my humiliation was spreading like wildfire. I'd chosen it specifically because no one from Holden's world would ever set foot there.

Maverick was already waiting when I arrived, his tall frame hunched slightly over a cup of coffee. He stood when he saw me, his eyes widening at my bandaged hand and the dark circles under my eyes.

"Gabrielle," he said softly, pulling out my chair.

I tried to speak, but the words caught in my throat. Everything—the betrayal, the humiliation, the violation of my home—crashed over me all at once. Before I knew it, I was crying, shoulders shaking with sobs I could no longer contain.

Maverick didn't rush me. He simply handed me a napkin and waited, his presence steady and calming.

When I finally could speak, the words poured out of me. Holden's affair with Elise. The broken hand. The rotten eggs. The fake funeral. The marriage certificate. Each revelation seemed to physically pain him, his jaw tightening with barely contained anger.

"I don't know what to do," I finished, my voice raw. "They've taken everything—my dignity, my friends, even my home."

Maverick was quiet for a long moment, his eyes never leaving my face. "I need to tell you something," he finally said, his voice low and serious. "I've had feelings for you for years, Gabrielle. I've watched you with Holden, wanting to say something but respecting your relationship."

I stared at him, this confession the last thing I'd expected.

"I'm not telling you this to complicate your life further," he continued quickly. "I just want you to know that whatever you decide to do next, you're not alone."

"What can I possibly do?" I asked, wiping away fresh tears.

Maverick leaned forward, his eyes bright with determination. "We expose them. Publicly. Let the world see exactly who the Hughes family really is."

"How?"

"I'll be your fiancé," he said simply. "We'll announce our engagement at Holden's wedding to Elise. We'll show everyone that you've moved on to someone better."

I blinked, stunned by his offer. "That's... that would humiliate them as much as they've humiliated me."

"Exactly."

---

"Here," Maverick said, sliding a folder across the table. "These are financial records from the Hughes Corporation over the past five years."

We were in his downtown office now, surrounded by the resources his business empire provided. Three days had passed since our café meeting, and we'd barely slept as we pieced together the truth.

"My father's connections helped," I explained, opening the folder with trembling fingers. "He's still respected in the business world, even if the Hughes family tried to discredit him."

Maverick nodded, his expression grim. "Look at these entries from three years ago."

I scanned the documents, my breath catching as I saw what he was pointing to. "These are payments to actors?"

"Exactly. And this—" he flipped to another page "—is a detailed plan for what they called 'Operation Indebtedness.'"

The words blurred before my eyes as I read the cold, calculated strategy. The fake kidnapping three years ago. The carefully orchestrated rescue by Holden's family. All designed to make me feel eternally grateful, to bind me to them through fabricated debt.

"They never loved me," I whispered, the final piece falling into place. "It was all about my father's patents."

Maverick's hand covered mine, warm and steady. "We have them, Gabrielle. We have everything we need to destroy them."

I looked up at him, a new resolve hardening within me. "Then let's do it."
