Chapter 3

The investigators found me in three weeks.

I was in Caleb's office when Dominic Ashworth appeared in the doorway. Tall, sharp-eyed, ex-military posture. Caleb's head of security.

"Hughes landed at Heathrow two hours ago," Dominic said.

I looked up from the grant application I was reviewing. My pen stopped mid-note.

Caleb didn't look surprised. He set down his phone. "Where is he now?"

"The Connaught. He's already made three attempts to reach the townhouse. We've redirected each one."

"Good." Caleb's voice was calm. Final. He glanced at me. "Do you want to see him?"

I thought about that. Ronan, in London, tearing through the city looking for me. A month ago the thought would have shattered something. Now it just felt distant. Like hearing about a stranger's problem.

"No," I said.

Caleb nodded once. Dominic disappeared.

I went back to my application. My hand was steady.

The Victoria and Albert Museum gala was black-tie. Old money and new, European royalty and tech billionaires, everyone glittering under the vaulted ceilings. I wore midnight silk. Caleb had asked if I wanted to skip it. I'd said no.

We arrived late. Caleb's hand settled on the small of my back as we entered—not possessive, just present. A photographer called my name. I turned. Smiled. The flash went off.

Inside, Serena Voss found me immediately. She'd flown in from New York for the event. Her hug was tight.

"You look incredible," she said. "Happy."

"I am," I said. The words came out true.

We drifted through the crowd. Caleb introduced me to a German industrialist, a French minister, a duchess whose name I forgot immediately. They asked about the foundation. I answered. They listened. Actually listened.

Then I felt it.

The weight of a stare.

I turned.

Ronan stood thirty feet away, half-hidden behind a marble column. He looked thinner. Hollow. His tuxedo hung wrong. His eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that would have pinned me in place a month ago.

Now it just slid off.

I looked at him. Registered his presence the way you'd register a piece of furniture. Then I turned back to the duchess and finished my sentence.

When I glanced back, Dominic was there. Two other men in dark suits flanked him. They spoke quietly to Ronan. His face went white. Then red. He said something sharp. Dominic's expression didn't change.

They escorted him toward the exit.

Ronan looked back once. Our eyes met.

I felt nothing.

I turned into Caleb's side. His hand came up to my shoulder. Steady. Warm.

"Are you all right?" he asked quietly.

"Yes," I said. And I was.

The Financial Times profile ran two weeks later.

*From Silence to Starlight: Peyton Crawford's Foundation for Survivors*

They didn't name Ronan. Didn't need to. The details were enough. A decade of canceled engagements. A man who chose his adopted sister over his fiancée ninety-nine times. The woman who finally walked away and built an empire helping others do the same.

The article went viral.

Interview requests flooded in. Davos invited me to speak on a panel. Three European boards extended offers. My inbox was a flood I couldn't keep up with.

I sat in Caleb's office, staring at the screen.

"This is too much," I said.

He looked up. "You don't have to accept any of it."

"People are listening."

"They should have been listening ten years ago."

I touched the base of my throat. He noticed. Stood. Crossed the room. Took my hand gently and lowered it.

"You don't have to be small anymore," he said.

I looked up at him. His eyes were steady. Patient. Sure.

I nodded.

The dinner party was at a Belgravia townhouse. Old European money. Twelve guests around a table set with china older than America.

I was seated between a Swiss banker and a London socialite named Margot. The conversation drifted from markets to art to summer plans.

Then Margot leaned in.

"I saw the most extraordinary necklace last week," she said. "Kimberly Sanchez was wearing it at the Met. Van Cleef. Custom constellation piece. Must have cost a fortune."

My fork stopped halfway to my mouth.

"It was stunning," Margot continued. "All those tiny diamonds. She said it was a gift from her brother. So sweet."

The table blurred slightly. I set down my fork. My hand rose to the base of my throat. Pressed there.

Across the table, Caleb's eyes met mine. He saw.

I lowered my hand. Picked up my wine. Took a sip.

"Lovely," I said. My voice came out even.

The conversation moved on.

That night I couldn't sleep.

I sat in Caleb's office in the dark, laptop open, staring at the legal documents.

Starlight Cove. The private island off the coast of Greece. Ronan had bought it six years ago. Named it for me. Called me starlight in the dark. Promised we'd spend our honeymoon there.

I opened the auction listing template.

Filled in the details. Property description. Location. Market value.

I paused at the submission button.

Ten years. Ninety-nine promises. One necklace I never got.

I clicked submit.

The confirmation screen loaded. *Your listing will be public within 24 hours.*

I closed the laptop.

Caleb appeared in the doorway. He didn't ask. Just sat in the chair across from me.

"I listed the island," I said.

He nodded.

"He'll see it," I said. "He'll know."

"Good," Caleb said quietly.

I looked at him. "Is that cruel?"

"No," he said. "It's freedom."

I leaned back. Closed my eyes. Felt the weight lift.

When I opened them, Caleb was still there. Waiting. Unhurried.

"Thank you," I said.

"For what?"

"For staying."

He reached across the space between us. Took my hand.

"Always," he said.
