Chapter 2

Graham knocked on my door at nine the next morning.

I hadn't slept. I'd taken off the dress, scrubbed my face until it stung, and spent most of the night on the couch with the ring sitting on the coffee table in front of me like evidence.

When I opened the door, he was holding two coffees from the café on the corner. Oat milk latte, extra shot. He'd remembered my order. Somehow that made it worse.

"Can I come in?"

I stepped aside without answering.

He set the cups on the kitchen counter and didn't take off his coat. His eyes were bloodshot, and he hadn't shaved. For a second, he looked like the man I used to wait up for, the one who came home at midnight and fell asleep with his head in my lap.

Then I remembered his hand on Natalie's waist.

"I'm not going to lie to you," he said. "I kissed her."

"I know. I was there."

He flinched. "It was a mistake, Evelyn. A stupid one. You know what the last two months have been like. The Bellmont acquisition, then the Harbor Group deal right on top of it. Natalie's been in the office with me fourteen hours a day. Last night we'd both been drinking, and she was trying to calm me down because the investors were…"

"So she was comforting you."

"That's not what I…" He dragged a hand down his face. "It just happened. And I stopped it."

I leaned against the counter and folded my arms.

"Before I walked in," I said, "or after?"

He opened his mouth. Then he closed it.

The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere down the hall, a neighbor's dog was barking. Graham looked at the coffee cups instead of me, and the silence went on long enough to answer the question for him.

"That's what I thought," I said.

"Evie, please. One night. One mistake. I'll move her to another department. I'll do whatever you want."

The buzzer went off.

We both turned toward the intercom. I pressed the button, and a thin, nervous voice came through the speaker.

"Ms. Shaw? It's Natalie. I just want five minutes. Please."

Graham's jaw tightened. "I told her not to come here."

"Did you?" I pressed the button to let her up. "Then she's not great at listening to you either."

Natalie looked like she hadn't slept. Her hair was pulled back in a messy knot, and she was clutching her purse strap with both hands. When she saw Graham standing in my kitchen, her face went red all the way to her ears.

"I'm so sorry," she said before I could say anything. "I know there's nothing I can say that fixes it. I just needed you to know I never planned for any of this. I would never try to break up an engagement."

"Okay," I said.

"I mean it. I've been sick about it all night." She swallowed hard. "It's just that Graham said you two had been fighting so much lately, about the wedding and about work, and I honestly thought things between you were already…"

She stopped.

I didn't move.

"Already what?"

"Nothing. I didn't mean…"

"He talks to you about us?"

Natalie's eyes darted to Graham. That one look told me more than anything she could have said.

"Natalie," Graham said quietly. "Maybe you should go."

"No." I didn't take my eyes off her. "Stay. I want to hear this."

She shrank back against the door. "Ms. Shaw, I really shouldn't…"

"What did he tell you about the dress appointments?"

Her lips pressed together. When she spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper. "That he canceled three of them. And that you cried after the last one."

I'd cried in the car. Alone. I'd told exactly one person about it, and he was standing four feet away from me.

"What else?"

"Evelyn, stop," Graham said.

"What else, Natalie?"

She looked at the floor. "That you've been arguing about where to live after the wedding. You want to keep this apartment for a while, and his mother wants you in the house in Greenwich."

My throat went tight. We'd had that fight in bed, with the lights off, at two in the morning.

"Keep going."

"He said…" She hesitated, then forced it out. "He said you told him you were starting to feel like he needed an assistant more than a wife."

The room went very still.

I'd said that to Graham three weeks ago. I'd been sitting on the edge of our bed with my hands shaking, trying to explain why I felt invisible, and he'd kissed my forehead and promised things would be different after the Bellmont deal closed.

Then he'd gone to work and repeated it to his assistant.

I turned to him. "Is she lying?"

Graham's shoulders dropped. For once, he didn't reach for a smooth answer.

"No," he said. "It started a few months ago. We'd be working late, and she'd ask how I was doing. Nobody else asked. It was easier to talk to her than to come home and have the same fight again."

"So you brought our fights to her instead."

"I just needed someone to talk to."

"You had someone." My voice cracked, and I hated that it did. "You had me. You just didn't like what I was saying."

I looked at the two of them, Natalie pressed against my front door and Graham standing next to the latte he'd bought to soften me up. Last night, I'd told myself it was one terrible moment. A drink, a bad decision, a door left open.

But a kiss didn't come out of nowhere.

It came after months of late nights and private jokes, after my tears and my fears had been handed to her one confession at a time. Last night might have been their first kiss.

The betrayal had started long before that.

I picked up my phone from the counter.

"What are you doing?" Graham asked.

I didn't answer. I found the bridal salon's number and hit call. A bright voice picked up on the second ring.

"Hi, this is Evelyn Shaw. I have a fitting on Thursday at two. I need to cancel it." I paused. "No, I don't want to reschedule. I'll call if anything changes."

Graham took a step toward me. "Evelyn."

I opened my email and typed a message to Danielle, our wedding planner. Please pause all new payments and vendor deposits until further notice. I'll be in touch. I read it once and hit send while he watched.

"Are you serious right now?" His voice rose for the first time all morning. "You're canceling the wedding?"

"I'm pausing it."

"Over one kiss?" He stared at me like he didn't recognize me. "You're really throwing away six years because of one kiss?"

"No."

I set the phone down on the counter, next to the coffee I hadn't touched.

"I'm reconsidering six years because apparently a third person already knows everything inside them."

Natalie made a small sound and slipped out the door. Graham stayed another minute, saying my name like it could fix something. Then he left too.

That night, I sat on the couch in the dark with my laptop open on my knees.

At 10:47, an email came in.

From: Sebastian Cole. Subject: Brand Strategy Lead – Marisol Coast. Contract attached.

There was no message in the body except one line.

Read the clean-room clause first.

I opened the PDF. I read every page, including the clause. Then I scrolled back to the top and sat there with the cursor blinking over the signature line.

I didn't sign it.

But I didn't delete it either.
