Chapter 2

"My past is dead, Angela. You are the only person I want for the rest of my life."

Jackson had sworn those words three years ago on a frozen street in Manhattan, kneeling in two feet of snow while the blizzard caked his eyelashes. I had believed him. I was the top violinist graduating from the conservatory that spring, clutching a contract offer from the Berlin Symphony. I shredded that contract into garbage so I could stay by his side while his startup survived a brutal corporate buyout. When a viral fever nearly killed me two years later, Jackson walked out of a three-hundred-million-dollar acquisition summit just to hold ice packs to my chest until dawn.

He had loved me with everything he possessed.

Now, seven days of Maria had turned five years of devotion into ash.

On Tuesday, Jackson stopped wearing the emerald silk tie I had bought him for his birthday.

"The geometric print makes Maria dizzy," he told me while unknotting it in the hallway. "Her optic nerves are hypersensitive right now."

On Thursday, he slipped off his platinum band and dropped it into a drawer.

"She saw the band and suffered a migraine for four hours," he muttered, avoiding my face. "Angela, just be flexible. It is just metal."

By Saturday evening, the madness reached its peak.

I stood at the bottom of the grand stairs as Jackson adjusted his cufflinks. He wore a charcoal wool three-piece suit with a notched lapel—the exact garment he had worn during his college dates with Maria four years ago.

"Where are you going dressed like that?" I demanded.

Jackson checked his reflection in the foyer mirror. "Maria booked a table at Le Petit Chateaux. She found the reservation card from our third anniversary in her old coat."

"She booked it?" My voice rose, raw and strained. "That restaurant requires a three-month waiting list. You called them and pulled strings."

"She was crying, Angela! She woke up thinking today was our four-year anniversary!"

"And what anniversary is it for you, Jackson?" I stepped into his path, blocking the front door. "Are you taking your ex on a romantic date while your actual fiancée sleeps in the basement guest room?"

"It is dinner to keep her blood pressure down," he snapped, checking his gold watch. "The neurologist explicitly warned us about cognitive dissonance. If I shatter her illusion before the inflammation subsides, she could suffer permanent brain damage."

"What about my damage?" I gripped his lapel, the rough wool scratching my palms. "What is next, Jackson? When she wakes up tomorrow and demands a ceremony, do I hand her my veil? If she wants to be Mrs. Jackson, do I give her our wedding too?"

His jaw hardened. His features turned cold, a look he had never once directed at me in five years.

"Angela, why do you constantly have to turn this into a competition?" he said, his tone biting. "Why do you insist on fighting a brain-damaged patient for a win?"

I stepped back. The slap of his words stung worse than a physical strike.

"Get out of my way," Jackson ordered, his voice flat. "The car is idling."

He brushed past my shoulder and shut the door behind him.

The following morning brought my only lifeline.

After years away from the concert hall, Maestro Kowalski had granted me a private audition for the guest first-chair seat in the Philharmonic. It was my final opportunity to resurrect my career.

I set my violin case by the front shoe rack at nine sharp. My audition was scheduled for ten fifteen across town.

A high, piercing shriek shattered the silence from the upper floor.

"Jackson! Jackson, I cannot see! Everything is spinning!"

Footsteps pounded across the upstairs landing. Jackson sprinted down the steps, half-shaved, lather still clinging to his jawline. Maria stumbled behind him, clutching her skull, her knees giving out on the final riser.

"Maria! Look at me, stay with me!" Jackson caught her around the waist, lifting her into his arms.

"My head is burning..." Maria sobbed against his neck. "Jackson, make it stop..."

"I am taking you to the emergency ward right now," Jackson breathed, panic tightening his throat.

His eyes swept the entrance console. His hand shot out and snatched my car keys from the bowl.

"Jackson, no!" I grabbed his forearm. "My keys? That is my car!"

"My sedan is blocked in by the delivery van in the driveway!" he barked, dodging my reach. "Maria needs an immediate brain scan!"

"Jackson, listen to me!" I pointed toward my instrument case. "My audition with Kowalski is in forty minutes! It is my final chance! If I miss this slot, the season opens without me—they will give the seat to Marcus!"

"Are you completely out of your mind?" Jackson roared, glaring at me as Maria wept into his collar. "A woman is dying right in front of you, and you are whining about a violin audition? Call an Uber!"

"There are no drivers out here in the hills on Sunday morning! You know it takes forty-five minutes for a car to reach this gate!"

"Then walk to the main road!" Jackson pushed past me, kicking the heavy front door open with his heel. "People's lives matter more than your ego, Angela!"

The door slammed.

The engine roared to life in the driveway. Tires threw wet gravel against the garage siding as my compact vehicle tore down the private road.

I dropped to the floor beside my case. I pulled out my phone, dialing the dispatch service.

*No drivers available in your sector.*

I called Maestro Kowalski’s assistant. The call connected to voicemail.

"Maestro Kowalski, this is Angela. A medical emergency occurred at home... I am trying to find a ride, please, just give me thirty minutes—"

The automated tone cut me off.

At ten thirty, the assistant texted back a single sentence: *The Maestro does not tolerate lack of discipline. The seat has been filled.*

I sat on the cold entryway tiles until noon, staring at the polished wood of my instrument case. The dream I had sacrificed for Jackson was finally, irreversibly dead.

***

Midnight arrived with a bitter, bone-chilling rain.

I opened the front door, soaked from the three-mile walk from the suburban bus stop. The foyer was dark, save for the blue glow of a smartphone screen leaking from the living room couch.

Maria sat cross-legged on the plush cushions. She was wearing Jackson’s favorite cashmere sweater, sipping warm milk. She held her phone high above her head, tilting her chin, clicking rapid selfies with the front-facing lens.

On the third finger of her left hand, a familiar brilliant stone caught the lamplight.

It was my three-carat diamond engagement ring. The ring Jackson had spent eight months designing with an artisan in Florence. The ring that had vanished from my jewelry box two days ago.

"Take that off," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

Maria paused. She lowered her device, an angelic smile curving her pink lips.

"Why should I?" she asked, spreading her fingers to admire the cut. "Jackson told me anything in this house belongs to his future wife. It fits my finger far better than it ever fit yours, don't you think?"

There was no confusion in her eyes. No fog of trauma. Only cold, sharp triumph.

"You took it from my vanity," I said, advancing across the rug. "Take it off right now, or I will break your fingers."

"Try it, Angela." Maria giggled, flashing the ring toward the ceiling. "Go ahead. Touch me."

I lunged forward, grabbing her wrist with both hands, twisting to pull the platinum band from her knuckle.

The moment my skin brushed hers, Maria’s expression transformed.

"Ah! Jackson! Help me!"

Maria threw her head back, shrieking at the top of her lungs. She jerked backward violently, slamming her own shoulder against the coffee table before collapsing onto the hardwood floor, writhing and gripping her temples.

"Maria!"

Jackson burst out of the kitchen, dropping a glass of water that shattered against the tiles.

He didn't ask questions. He didn't look at the ring.

Jackson charged across the room and shoved both hands into my chest.

The force sent me flying backward. My spine cracked against the sharp corner of the oak credenza, knocking the breath completely out of my lungs.

"Are you insane?!" Jackson bellowed, towering over me while gathering Maria into his lap. "What did you do to her?!"

"Jackson, she tried to tear my arm off..." Maria whimpered, trembling like a wounded bird against his chest. "She said I stole her life... my head hurts so bad..."

"Look at her hand!" I choked out, clutching my bruised ribs as I struggled to stand. "Look at her finger! She stole my engagement ring! She went into my room and took it!"

Jackson glanced down at Maria’s hand, then snapped his head toward me. His eyes burned with fury.

"Enough!" he screamed, his voice shaking the walls. "It is just a ring! It is a piece of fucking rock, Angela! Do you have to drive her into a fatal seizure just to protect your petty jealousy?"

"My ring—"

"I will buy you ten more rings if you just shut your mouth!" Jackson yelled, his chest heaving. "Get out of this room! Don't come near her again!"

I leaned against the credenza, the room spinning around me.

Slowly, I looked down at my own left hand. My ring finger was bare, pale, marked only by the faint indentation of where a promise used to rest.

A strange, quiet calm settled deep inside my chest. The pain in my back faded away into nothingness.

For the first time in five years, the fog cleared from my eyes.

I looked at the furious man shielding another woman in his arms, and I finally understood.

The ring wasn't the thing I needed to walk away from.

He was.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the real estate lawyer who handled my inheritance property downtown.

"Arthur," I said into the receiver, ignoring Jackson's startled frown. "Draft the eviction notice for this address. And call the moving vans for tomorrow morning."
