Chapter 1

Jacob tried to please his new girlfriend by forcing me to eat an entire plate of shrimp. I ended up in the hospital with a severe allergic reaction.

While I was fighting for my life, he stayed by her side the whole time.

"Don't worry. This isn't your fault. She's just a poor girl I'm supporting. Even if she died, it's just her paying me back."

I watched his indifferent expression.

Clenching my fist tightly, I suppressed the turmoil and spoke with a hint of bitterness.

"Ma'am, I agree to study abroad."

——

"Mia, you've finally come around. Your talent is meant for further studies abroad."

"I'll book your ticket for two weeks from now. Don't forget, okay?"

After hanging up the phone, I closed my eyes and tried to clear my head. I looked up when the ward's door was rudely pushed open.

Jacob was standing at the door, his arm around Catherine, who was wearing heavy makeup.

Our eyes met and he sneered, "I told you, poor people are tough. She won't die."

Catherine had red eyes and leaned weakly against Jacob.

"Jacob, this is all my fault. I had to come and check on her."

"Now that I know Mia's safe, I can finally breathe easy."

"You're just too good to everyone."

Watching the two of them show off their affection without caring for others.

I took a deep breath. A sharp pain shot through my heart, almost knocking me over.

I dug my nails into my palm so hard. I just felt so empty.

"I'm not feeling well. Could you both leave?"

Jacob hadn't expected me to be so blunt.

He glared at me angrily.

Catherine grabbed his arm. "Jacob, it's only natural that Mia is mad at me for what happened."

After speaking, the pretty woman burst into tears, making anyone feel sympathy.

She glanced at me cautiously before turning and running away.

Jacob didn't even spare me a glance as he hurried after her.

I watched their retreating figures, their hands pulling at each other, and my irritation grew stronger.

I was a poor student sponsored by The Yales. My parents had passed away when I was very young.

The Yale family had taken me in to keep Jacob company. His parents were always too busy to care about him.

We grew up together, depending on each other.

Maybe because he wanted attention, he was rebellious from a young age. Countless girls had crushes on him when he started the middle school.

To this day, who knew how many ex-girlfriends he had?

I liked him but had never dared to say it out loud.

As an impoverished student dependent on his generosity, I felt unworthy.

Every time I saw him getting close to another girl.

A piece of me shattered.

Catherine was his current love interest.

I naively hoped this one would be fleeting, like the others. But she was special.

Jacob cherished her and even introduced her to his family.

Catherine dismissed all the maids early to prepare a surprise birthday for Jacob.

She cooked up a vast seafood feast for him.

I was super allergic to seafood, so there was no way I could eat it.

But Jacob made me finish a whole plate of shrimp to make Catherine happy.

I blacked out after that.

I woke up in a hospital bed.

My thoughts were interrupted.

When I saw Jacob returned with Catherine.

He glared at me fiercely and demanded, "Mia, apologize to Catherine!"

My eyes were bloodshot as I stared at him in disbelief.

Jacob continued, "Catherine was terrified by how scary you looked yesterday. Apologize to her now."
