Chapter 4

I had never seen Evan completely consumed by lust like this. The man who was always gentle and considerate to me had a wild side I could not have imagined.

Violet clung to him tightly as her voice filled the room.

"Slow down... slow down..."

"Evan, do it slowly. You love how to torture me like this. Why don’t you torture Isla the same way?"

"I don’t want to do this to her." Evan moaned before continuing, "But you... don’t you just love it when I treat you like this?"

"Oh, my husband is so bad..."

Evan froze at her words, his movements halting abruptly. His gaze turned icy. "Don’t call me that. You don’t deserve it."

"The only one who can call me 'husband' is only Isla Montclair."

I felt my heart twist. Even as he betrayed me, he clung to the idea of his love for me.

He had no idea that it only made the irony of his betrayal unbearable.

"All right, all right. Who doesn’t know Captain Aldridge loves Doctor Montclair?" Violet smiled with false sweetness. "A woman like me can only be jealous."

Evan silenced her with a kiss. "Why be jealous? My body only reacts this way to you."

His words cut through me like a blade, sharper than anything.

His heart might be mine, but his body now belonged to someone else. This twisted version of love was far more painful than a merciless betrayal.

On the surveillance screen, their bodies tangled once more.

I froze as I watched Evan celebrate our anniversary by having fun with another woman. Tears blurred my vision, falling down my face uncontrollably.

For a long time, I lay still. When Evan thought I was deeply resting, he gently closed the door and went downstairs.

Only then did I open my eyes, my vision blurred by tears that refused to stop.

It turned out that this betrayal still hurt me deeply. No matter how much I prepared myself to let go, letting go still hurt so much that it was hard for me just to breathe.

My fingers reached for the necklace around my neck, touching the "proof of love" Evan had given me earlier.

Now, this proof of love only felt like a cruel joke.

Evan claimed he loved me, but his way of loving only made me sick.

His gentleness and thoughtfulness now felt like an elaborate facade. His so-called affection had turned into a web of deceit.

I would rather have nothing than endure this kind of love.

"The flight is at nine o'clock tomorrow night. We’ll arrange for a crash then. Be prepared."

I listened to the instructions on the phone. With a calm voice, I answered, "I’ll handle it."

Moments later, Evan entered the room, his face shadowed with concern. "Isla, who were you talking to?"

"The team arranged for me to go on a mission. I’ll be leaving tomorrow at nine in the evening."

"You’ve been so tired lately and you were even so busy today. Why don’t you take some time off? I can talk to the leader for you. We could rest together," Evan suggested out of concern.

I did not argue. I treated his offer as a final goodbye.

Looking at his gentle eyes, I could not help but think of the stranger I had seen in the surveillance camera.

***

Evan accompanied me to watch boring family dramas.

A scene about cheating was being played on TV and I asked nonchalantly, "Do men cheat just because of physical desire?"

"Love and sex aren’t the same thing. That woman is attractive, though. It’s no surprise the man couldn’t help himself," Evan answered casually.

"What about you?"

He froze for a moment, then stammered, "Of course, I’m different. My body and heart have always belonged to you."

I lowered my gaze, hiding the mockery in my eyes.

His phone buzzed, breaking the tension. The name "Violet" flashed on the screen.

Evan pressed the phone to silence it, but the ringing persisted.

I knew he was torn, struggling between staying with me, his devoted wife, or running to the woman he could not resist.

"If you have something to do, you should go. I have a flight at nine. I’ll be waiting."

Relief washed over his face as he hugged me tightly. "I’ll go and come back soon."

I watched Evan leave with a smile, but the curve of my lips never reached my eyes.

By seven in the evening, he still had not returned. My phone vibrated at this time. "Isla, I have an urgent mission and can’t get back in time."

Urgent mission, huh?

An image of Violet’s alluring figure flashed in my mind. No doubt. They must be busy turning things around.

"It’s okay. Your mission is more important."

"I’ll make it up to you when I come back. We didn’t get to enjoy our anniversary last time. Let’s ask for leave and travel together."

Make it up for me? Once he learned that I was "dead", I wondered what he would think about how to make up for me.

I began packing my luggage.

The house was full of memories, including photos of us smiling side by side, the sofa where we spent time together watching movies and even the vase he had once bought for me...

I used to believe these things would be with me for the rest of my life, but now, they were nothing but bitter reminders.

Since Evan claimed to love me, I decided to leave these memories behind and let him suffer. Let him be tortured by guilt every day as he looked at our photos and apologized over and over again.

The car arrived to take me away and the driver handed me my new ID. Sure thing, I accepted it without hesitation, without a glance back.

At exactly nine, a massive explosion erupted at the base hospital.

Sirens screamed through the air and panic spread like wildfire as people rushed toward the scene. Among the crowd, Evan and Violet stood there.

His face was drained of all color as he shouted my name over and over again. Violet reached out to comfort him, but he shoved her away so forcefully.

"Isla! You must wait for me!" he shouted at the top of his lungs, but the only answer was the crackling fire and the cold.

By then, I was far away, embarking on a new journey.

Evan, I hope you enjoy your life with your love and guilt forever.
