Chapter 2

The third charge arrived on a Tuesday morning while I sipped my coffee in the breakfast nook, watching Rhett practice piano through the French doors. The alert's chime had become a sound I dreaded, each notification another crack in the foundation of my marriage.

$15,000. Chanel Beverly Hills. One quilted handbag, black caviar leather.

My coffee cup rattled against the saucer as I set it down. Not for me—I would have remembered ordering a Chanel bag. The delivery address confirmed my suspicions: Eliana Shaw, Maple Drive.

Two days later, another alert. $8,000. Cartier Beverly Hills. Custom gold jewelry, engraved.

I stared at the charges on my laptop screen, the numbers blurring as my eyes filled with tears I refused to shed. Twenty-three thousand dollars in gifts for my sister-in-law. When was the last time Tanner had bought me anything beyond drugstore flowers on Valentine's Day?

When he arrived home that evening, I was waiting in the foyer, my arms crossed, the printed statements in my hand.

"Eliana needed some things," he said before I could speak, not even pausing to look at the evidence. "Atlas lost his job last month. They're struggling."

"A fifteen-thousand-dollar handbag is a necessity?"

He loosened his tie with sharp, irritated movements. "She's family, Adaline. She's been through a lot."

"And what about your actual family?" The words came out sharper than intended. "What about Rhett? What about me?"

Tanner's expression hardened. "You have everything you could possibly want. Don't be selfish."

Selfish. The word hit me like a physical blow. I was selfish for questioning why my husband was lavishing expensive gifts on another woman while treating his own wife like an afterthought.

Friday afternoon brought the playground incident that shattered any remaining illusions about my marriage.

I'd taken Rhett to Meridian Park for his playdate with Miguel—one of the few times our families socialized together. The boys were racing toward the monkey bars when it happened. Miguel tripped first, his knee hitting the concrete with a sickening scrape. Seconds later, Rhett stumbled over a raised root, landing hard on his palms and elbows.

Tanner, who'd been checking his phone near the benches, sprang into action at Miguel's cry. He rushed over, scooping the boy into his arms with practiced ease.

"Hey, buddy, let me see," he murmured, his voice gentle and soothing as he examined Miguel's scraped knee. "You're okay. Uncle Tanner's here."

Meanwhile, Rhett sat on the ground ten feet away, tears streaming down his face as he stared at his bleeding palms. I moved toward him, but waited—surely Tanner would notice his own son's distress.

He didn't.

Tanner continued fussing over Miguel, pulling out his pocket handkerchief to clean the scrape, making silly faces to stop the boy's tears. Miguel giggled despite his injury, basking in the attention.

Rhett's sobs grew louder.

"Daddy?" he called out, his voice small and broken. "Daddy, I'm hurt too."

Tanner glanced over, his expression shifting to something cold and impatient. "You're fine, Rhett. Walk it off. Boys don't cry over little scrapes."

The contrast was so stark, so deliberately cruel, that I felt physically ill. I rushed to Rhett, gathering him into my arms as he buried his face against my shoulder.

"Mommy's here," I whispered, kissing his temple. "Let's get you cleaned up."

As I carried my son toward the restroom, I heard Tanner's voice behind us, still gentle and caring as he comforted Miguel. "Ice cream after this, okay? You were so brave."

Brave. Miguel was brave for crying over a scraped knee, but Rhett was weak for the same response.

That night, after tucking Rhett into bed with extra stories and cuddles, I sat in my study with my laptop open. The decision crystallized with painful clarity—I needed answers. I needed proof. I needed to understand what was destroying my family from the inside.

Marcus Chen's private investigation firm had impeccable reviews and specialized in matrimonial cases. His website promised discretion, thoroughness, and results.

I dialed his number before I could change my mind.

"Chen Investigations, this is Marcus."

"Mr. Chen, my name is Adaline Kennedy-Shaw. I need to hire you for a delicate matter involving my husband."

The conversation was brief and professional. I provided Tanner's work schedule, our shared calendar access, and copies of the financial statements showing the recent charges. I also gave him Eliana's address and what little information I had about their high school history.

"I need to know the truth about their relationship," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos in my heart. "Whatever it costs, whatever it takes. I need to know why my husband cares more about his brother's family than his own."

"I understand, Mrs. Kennedy-Shaw. I'll begin surveillance Monday morning. You should have preliminary findings within two weeks."

As I hung up the phone, I caught my reflection in the darkened window. The woman staring back looked older somehow, her eyes carrying a weight that hadn't been there a month ago.

Two weeks to learn if my marriage was worth saving.

Or if it was already too late.
