Chapter 2

The next afternoon, I stood outside the tutoring center waiting for Asher, my fake bracelet heavy on my wrist like a shackle. Every time I looked at it, my stomach twisted with fresh betrayal. The cheerful chatter of other parents picking up their children felt distant, muffled by the cotton wool of my shock.

"Mrs. Spencer!"

I turned to see a young woman approaching with a bright smile that seemed too wide, too eager. She was petite with carefully styled blonde hair and wore a fitted dress that screamed expensive taste. My eyes immediately went to her wrist, where a delicate gold bracelet caught the afternoon light.

My bracelet. The real one.

"I'm Bridget Morrison, Asher's tutor," she said, extending her hand. Her voice was sweet, almost syrupy. "I've been hoping to meet you properly."

"Oh, yes." I forced myself to shake her hand, noting how her bracelet jangled softly with the movement. "Asher speaks very highly of you."

"He's such a bright boy." Bridget's smile never wavered, but there was something calculating in her green eyes. "Actually, I was wondering if you'd mind if I added you on Instagram? I like to share updates about the students' progress with their parents, and I post some educational content that might interest you."

Something cold slithered down my spine, but I nodded politely. "Of course, that would be lovely."

She pulled out her phone with manicured fingers, the bracelet sliding down her slender wrist. "Perfect! What's your handle?"

As I gave her my information, she held her phone at an angle that perfectly showcased the bracelet. The gesture seemed deliberate, practiced. When she moved to type, she made sure the gold caught the light again.

"There!" she chirped, lowering her phone. "I just sent you a follow request. I think you'll really enjoy my content."

Asher emerged from the building then, backpack slung over his shoulder, and I felt a rush of protective instinct. This woman—this predator—had been alone with my son, teaching him, while she destroyed our family from the inside.

"Ready to go, sweetheart?" I managed, placing my hand on Asher's shoulder.

"Bye, Miss Morrison!" Asher waved enthusiastically. "See you Thursday!"

"Bye, Asher!" Bridget's voice was genuinely warm when she spoke to him, which somehow made everything worse. "Keep practicing those math problems!"

As we walked to the car, I felt Bridget's eyes following us. When I glanced back, she was still standing there, phone in hand, that same calculating smile on her face.

That evening, after Asher was in bed and Ryan was supposedly working late—though now I wondered where he really was—I sat on our couch with trembling fingers, opening Instagram. Bridget's profile appeared at the top of my feed, and my breath caught.

Her latest post showed a close-up of her wrist, the Tiffany bracelet displayed against white silk sheets. The caption read: "Spoiled by someone special ❤️ #blessed #love #worthit"

I scrolled down with morbid fascination. Two days ago: a photo of an enormous bouquet of pink roses—999 of them, according to the caption. "When he really loves you, he shows it 🌹💕 #999roses #truelove #romance"

Another post from last week showed her at an expensive restaurant, wine glass raised to the camera, my husband's hand visible at the edge of the frame. "Date night with my favorite person ✨ #spoiled #dinnerdate #happiness"

Each image felt like a physical blow. These were the romantic gestures I thought were reserved for our marriage. The expensive dinners, the thoughtful gifts, the grand romantic displays—Ryan had been giving them all to her while I received Amazon knockoffs and empty promises.

I scrolled further back, finding weeks of evidence. Hotel room service trays for two. Shopping bags from luxury stores. Selfies with that radiant, satisfied smile of a woman who believed she'd won.

My hands shook so violently I nearly dropped my phone. The fake bracelet on my wrist felt like it was burning my skin. I yanked it off and threw it across the room, where it hit the wall with a pathetic clink.

Tears blurred my vision as I reached for my phone again, this time calling Sarah. She answered on the second ring.

"Kenzie? What's wrong?"

"Sarah," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I need you to come over. I need to tell you something, and I—I don't think I can handle this alone."

"I'm on my way."

Twenty minutes later, Sarah sat beside me on the couch, her arm around my shoulders as I showed her everything—the receipt, the fake bracelet, Bridget's Instagram posts. Her face grew darker with each revelation.

"That calculating bitch," Sarah muttered, studying a photo of Bridget wearing the bracelet. "She added you on purpose. She wanted you to see this."

"Why would she do that?"

"Because she wants you to know she's won." Sarah's voice was steel. "She's marking her territory, showing you exactly what Ryan gives her while you get scraps."

I buried my face in my hands. "Twelve years, Sarah. Twelve years of marriage, and this is what it comes to."

"No." Sarah gripped my shoulders, forcing me to look at her. "This is what it comes to for him. But you? You're going to be smart about this. We need evidence—real, undeniable proof that will protect you and Asher when this all comes out."

"What do you mean?"

Sarah's eyes gleamed with determination. "We're going to investigate. We're going to document everything. And when we're done, Ryan won't be able to lie his way out of this or manipulate you into staying."

I stared at my best friend, feeling something shift inside me. The broken, betrayed woman was still there, but underneath, something harder was beginning to form.

"You're right," I whispered. "I need to know everything."
