Chapter 1

[1]

On the first day I returned home, I had dinner with my best friend Lucy White.

During that time, Lucy stared at the ring on my right ring finger and said, "Nancy Jackson, are you really married?"

I was slightly stunned and nodded.

Lucy hesitated to speak, with a look of pity on her face, "I thought you came back for Ron Smith. He is getting married."

I didn't expect that after five years, when I heard the name again, my heart would still skip a beat, "It's all in the past. I've forgotten it."

Lucy didn't believe it, "Don't be so stubborn. You and Ron made such a big deal out of it back then. I don't believe you can forget him."

I looked at the wine glass in my hand and thought of my extremely grand engagement ceremony five years before, which had been ruined by Ron.

The Smith family was at the height of its power at that time. After that incident, Ron was taken to the police station, and a few days later I was arranged to go abroad.

I thought Ron would hate me so much and never see me again in the life, but I didn't expect that the day before I was leaving the country, Ron stood in front of the Smiths' villa until late at night.

In the biting cold wind, his face turned pale and his voice trembled. "Nancy, you think you can play with the feelings of poor people as you please?"

He held me down with both hands, and the cold rain poured down.

I didn't know what he meant by that. He was the one who found me annoying and had another woman in his heart. He even went to see his childhood sweetheart Ada Bell on our anniversary. Why did he say that to me?

The belated affection was cheap. I angrily broke off his hands that were on my shoulders and told him, "Ron, I'm tired of you."

Then I jogged all the way and didn't dare to look back.

After going abroad, I cut off all contact with him, but I often dreamed of Ron wearing a thin white shirt, standing in front of my house alone.

He, the God's favored one, degenerated because of me, a cynical rich girl. He must have hated me, right?

Lucy said I was cruel and mean.

Ron was once a legendary figure in Ala University. Apart from his poor family background, his academic performance and appearance always topped the list of Ala University's Wall of Fame.

I smiled, "So it seems like I ruined him."

I was four years older than Ron.

When I met him, I was 26 and he was 22.

At that time, I was just taken back to the Jackson family. My biological father and stepmother didn't love me. The only fun I had was to go against my father.

When attending the investment promotion event of Ala University, Ron spoke as a student representative.

I fell in love with the cool and thin boy in a white shirt at first sight.

After the event, out of politeness, he told me that his name was Ron Smith.

"My name is Nancy Jackson. You can call me Miss Jackson or Nancy."

When we shook hands, I looked at him charmingly and tickled his palm teasingly.

He avoided me in a panic, and the disgust and contempt in his eyes were particularly obvious.

After that, I didn't go to Ala University for a long time and gradually forgot about him.

Until one day, I was forced by my father to attend a social event, and someone deliberately made me drink.

I walked to the door with unsteady steps and two men surrounded me.

During the struggle, I slapped one of them, and just when he was getting angry, Ron appeared.

He was wearing a hotel waiter's uniform. When he saw it was me, his expression froze, as if he didn't want to save me.

I grabbed him with both hands, leaning towards and against him, "Take me away."

After looking at me for a while, Ron finally picked me up.

He looked thin, but his chest gave me an inexplicable sense of reassurance.

When Ron left the police station, he had several bruises on his face and was fired from the hotel.

He suppressed his emotions the whole time, but I laughed very happily.

When he was about to leave me at the hotel front desk, I raised my eyebrows and kissed him in front of everyone. That was his first kiss.

He pushed me away in an instant as if he was contaminated by something dirty, and his face was turning red and white with anger.

[2]

After a long time, my fake kind-hearted father wanted to arrange a marriage for me.

I nodded and drove to Ala University.

Perhaps it was because my clothes and sports car were too dazzling that students passing by all looked at me.

As Ron didn't show up yet, I started calling the school leaders.

Not long after, Ron walked out of the teaching building with a dark face.

"Miss Jackson, I have work to do and don't have time to play with you."

I leaned against the car door and smiled, "Your work is to pick up trash in every class?"

Ron's face turned pale, "Since you know, then don't bother me."

After saying that, he turned and left.

I was really bored, "Ten thousand dollars!"

Ron paused and looked back at me as if he couldn't believe it.

I stepped forward in my 4 inches high heels, "Spend the afternoon with me, and I'll give you 10,000 dollars."

His eyebrows turned pale and he stared at me.

I was afraid he would disagree, so I persuaded him, "That is faster than you can make in a month picking up trash."

"Such a crackpot." After saying that, Ron left.

After being rejected again, I didn't get angry, but found it very interesting.

When I was leaving Ala University, David Hall called me.

David was the only man in the upper class circle who had good intentions towards me.

When I finished the appointment and came out of the cafe, I unexpectedly saw Ron with a girl in her early twenties.

Across the street, the two walked side by side. The girl took the initiative to hold Ron's arm, holding a cup of coffee in her hand.

David saw me looking at them, "You know them?"

I looked away and smiled, "He is my future boyfriend."

David looked at me in surprise and said nothing.

After that, I found various reasons to go to Ala University.

I also took over the student fund project that my father invested in Ala University.

Seeing that I was devoting myself to the career, my father became more and more satisfied.

I walked to the classroom door when Ron was in class and called him in front of everyone. I also pretended to run into him by chance while eating in the cafeteria and pestered him.

For convenience, I even bought the small restaurant where Ron worked.

After he resigned, I appeared in front of him all the time.

Because of that, he lost his jobs as a cleaner in school, a waiter in a restaurant, and a network administrator in an Internet cafe.

Rumors spread around the school that Ron hooked up with a rich woman. I just sat leisurely in the apartment, patiently waiting for the prey to take the bait.

Even David said that I changed and always picked on such a young boy who had not yet entered society.

I laughed.

Within two days, Ron disappeared.

In order to avoid me, he not only changed his route, but also skipped class. He had been never late or left early before.

When his girlfriend Ada came to me, her eyes were red from crying, and she stared at me with hatred and fear, "Can you let Ron off?

"He finally got into college. You're going to ruin him. Do you know what other students say about him?"

She cried and complained.

I leaned against the car and asked her, "What did they say?"

Seeing that I was so confident, she got so angry that her face turned red and she turned away.

I guessed what they said, which was nothing more than that he was my plaything or was being kept by me.

That night I found out the house Ron rented through an acquaintance.

It was a small and dilapidated house with a dark and damp atmosphere in the corridor, and it was far away from the university.

When Ron saw me through the iron door, he closed the door without saying a word.

"If you dare not to open the door, I will keep knocking here."

Ron frowned, "What do you want?"

I noticed that his face was a little red and his breathing was heavy. "Open the door first."

After a stalemate, Ron finally opened the door.

The room was extremely dim, with one bedroom and one living room less than 215 square feet.

As soon as I entered the house, I smelled a damp and musty smell. "Even if you live here, you don't want to be with me?"

Ron didn't want to pay attention to me. He lay down on the only shabby sofa in the living room with his arm resting on his face.

I saw a few boxes of medicine on the old wooden bench next to me.

When I walked over and put my hand on his forehead, he tried to shake my hand, but he didn't have the strength.

After realizing that he was running a fever, I tried to help him up. "You have a bad fever and have to go to the hospital."

He didn't want to pay any attention to me, let alone me touching him.

I pulled him again, "Ron, don't argue with me."

Ron was forcibly pulled up by me. His face was a little red with fever, and his brows were full of anger. He said to me coldly, "Stay away from me. I will be fine."

My hand that was shaken away stopped in mid-air, and I looked at the handsome but extremely stubborn man in front of me.

Because of the fever, his angry eyes were a little red.

The next second I kissed him.

His hot lips were filled with my scent.

He was stunned for a moment, then stepped back after coming to his senses. "Nancy, do you have any sense of shame?"

I smiled brightly and charmingly, "If you don't listen to me, I will keep kissing you."

Ron pursed his lips tightly at that moment, clenched his fists until his fingers turned white, and his frown never relaxed.

I saw that he was still struggling and pretended to kiss him again.

When I was extremely close to his lips, he finally unclenched his fists, and finally gave in helplessly. "If I go to the hospital, will you stop pestering me?"

I pretended to think and smiled, "Maybe."

Ron closed his eyes tightly. After a long time, he opened his eyes and stood up, "I'm going to the hospital."

I smiled and stood up.

After arriving at the hospital, he was diagnosed with chronic enteritis and infection and needed to be hospitalized.

Ron refused. I put him in the hospital and went to see a doctor alone.

The doctor said he was severely anemic and should have had a large amount of blood drawn on him recently.

I was shocked at the doctor's words.

When I returned to the ward, Ron had already fallen asleep. I stayed with him for a while, paid all the fees and left.

As Ron wished, I didn't show up for the next month.

During that period, David transferred a sum of money to me, saying that someone asked him to repay me.

When I saw the amount of money, I almost laughed out loud.

When the Ala University's project was finished, my dad didn't bother to go there, so he asked me to go.

Unexpectedly, David was also there. He smiled and waved at me when he saw me.

I sat next to him and he said, "The university attaches great importance to this project, and there will be a student performance after the ceremony."

I nodded, somewhat uninterested.

After the ceremony, I no longer went around blocking Ron like I did before.

All the eyes around seemed to be focused on David.

I stood up and said jokingly, "Heartthrob, I want to go out for some fresh air. Look at those female students next to you. They have been staring at me like love rivals."

David unexpectedly pulled me back, "You are so eager to draw a line between you and me. Are you afraid that someone will get jealous?"

I paused for a moment, then smiled, "No one has ever been jealous of me."

I came to the playground alone.

When I was standing on the slope and watching the boys playing basketball below, I actually whistled at them.

Before I was taken home by my biological father, I also lived a life of poverty like Ron.

Perhaps because I felt a sense of sympathy for him, I stopped pestering him and causing him trouble after that night.

While I was still deep in thought, I heard someone calling Ron.

My heart sank. It couldn't be such a coincidence.

When I turned around, I saw Ron behind me.

[3]

As far as I could remember, he always wore a white shirt.

Clean and thin.

The sunset shone on his face. Although he was thin, his facial features were clearer than before.

Our eyes met, and after a few seconds, I held my wrist, "I didn't break my promise. I came here only for official business."

Ron was still so cold and indifferent. When I turned back, he spoke, "How can I pay you back the rest of the money?"

I paused and thought carefully about what he meant.

Ron seemed to be afraid that I might misunderstand something, so he explained, "I recently found a new job and just got paid."

I didn't expose his embarrassment, and took out my phone from my bag, "Facebook."

Ron looked at the phone I handed over and hesitated. After he took out his phone and unlocked it, I took the phone from him, opened Facebook, and added him as a friend.

After adding, I returned the phone to him and told him with a smile, "I don't mind if you return the money slowly."

After I returned to the event site, David had already reserved a seat for me.

The performance was wonderful, and even David, who was always very busy, watched it with great interest.

When I went to the bathroom during the show, I unexpectedly found Ron sitting at the back of the audience.

Seeing that he was staring at the stage with his bright eyes and didn't notice my presence at all, I glanced towards the stage unconsciously.

Then I couldn't help but laugh. He wasn't secretly looking at me, but was looking at his girlfriend.

After the show, I went to the bar.

Ron suddenly sent me a message, "Can you help me?"

I sobered up immediately and rushed to the hotel that Ron sent me, only to find out that his girlfriend had been raped by someone while having a celebratory dinner with her classmates in the evening.

The person who raped her was powerful, so the police just said a few perfunctory words and the matter was over.

Ron looked very cold, with gloom in his eyes, and stood guard outside the door.

I heard bursts of crying coming from the room. I was afraid that Ron would act impulsively, so I called David.

While waiting for David to arrive, Ron stood outside the door and did not allow anyone to enter.

That night, after David came back from going out, he gave me a memory card.

It was full of photos of Ada being abused.

I didn't know if it was because of Ron's desire to protect her, but I didn't give the card to Ron.

Within a month, because David had crippled the rapist, he directly withdrew all cooperation with the Hall family.

My father, who was very close to the Hall family, flew into a rage when he learned that it was me who asked David to do that. Without asking the reason, he slapped me in the face.

I had never been loved. Even though my heart died a long before, I still felt very uncomfortable.

I grabbed my keys and went out, running wildly through the cold, windy and rainy streets.

Ron opened the door and saw me soaking wet like a drowned rat. He frowned and pulled me into the house.

He found a blanket to wipe the water off my body and asked me, "What happened?"

His tone was anxious. I held his hand, and after looking at him for a few seconds, I suddenly kissed him.

He dodged, but I didn't care and kissed him regardless.
