Chapter 1

Three days before the gala, I stood in my office on the thirty-second floor of the Lawson Group building and checked the seating chart for the fourteenth time. The Plaza. Eight hundred guests. Champagne towers and orchids flown in from Ecuador. Twenty years of marriage deserved a celebration that looked effortless, which meant I'd spent six weeks making sure every detail was perfect.

My phone buzzed. Gage. I picked it up too fast.

"Flight confirmed. Land at JFK Thursday at six."

No greeting. No warmth. Just logistics. I typed back a thumbs-up emoji and hated myself for it.

I set the phone down and opened the velvet box I'd been keeping in my desk drawer. The Patek Philippe caught the afternoon light. Platinum case. Blue face. Our wedding date engraved on the back in script so fine you had to tilt it to read it. Twenty thousand dollars I'd earned myself, managing the domestic operations he never bothered to learn. I'd been imagining his face when I gave it to him. The surprise. The gratitude. The proof that I still knew him.

I closed the box. Something felt wrong. It had felt wrong for months now, a low hum of unease I kept attributing to exhaustion. I was tired. Of course I was tired. I ran a company, raised two children mostly alone, and kept a marriage intact across an ocean. Tired was the price of doing it right.

I slipped the box into my bag and went back to the seating chart.

The night of the gala, I arrived at The Plaza two hours early. The event coordinator met me in the lobby with a tablet and a problem: the ice sculpture was delayed. I rerouted a supplier, approved a substitution, and moved on to the florals. The orchids looked anemic under the ballroom lights. I had them repositioned. The champagne towers needed adjusting. I adjusted them.

By seven, guests were arriving. I stood near the entrance in a black gown I'd selected because Gage once said he liked me in black, and greeted eight hundred people with a smile that felt like a mask I'd been wearing so long I'd forgotten there was a face underneath.

Gage arrived at seven-thirty, tanned and handsome in his tuxedo, and kissed my cheek like we were posing for a photograph. Maybe we were. There were cameras everywhere.

"You look beautiful," he said.

"Thank you."

"Everything looks perfect."

"I'm glad."

He moved into the crowd. I watched him shake hands, laugh at jokes, command the room the way he always did. I felt nothing. That scared me more than anything else.

At eight-fifteen, the event coordinator found me near the champagne tower. There was a problem with the AV system in the back offices. I followed her through the service corridors, heels clicking on marble, mind already troubleshooting. The office was small and overheated. A laptop sat open on the desk, logged into the Lawson Group's financial portal.

I meant to close it. I saw the wire transfer summary first.

Kensington Preparatory Academy. London. Quarterly tuition. Three students. Names I didn't recognize: Olivia Lawson. Benjamin Lawson. Charlotte Lawson.

I sat down.

I opened the cloud account linked at the bottom of the screen. It was a shared family account. I didn't remember setting it up. The photo library loaded.

Gage at the head of a dining table in a townhouse with crown molding and tall windows. A woman beside him, blonde and smiling, pouring wine. Three children. A Christmas tree in the background. Everyone wearing matching pajamas.

I scrolled.

Birthday parties. School plays. A family portrait in front of a fireplace. The woman's hand on Gage's shoulder. His hand on hers.

Christmas cards. Professional prints. "Happy Holidays from the Lawson Family."

I checked the metadata. The oldest photo was dated eleven years ago.

I closed the laptop. My hands were steady. That surprised me. I stood up, smoothed my gown, and walked back to the ballroom.

Blair was near the champagne tower, laughing with a group of her friends. I touched her elbow. She turned, eyebrows raised.

"Can I talk to you for a second?"

She followed me to a quieter corner. I kept my voice low and even.

"I found some financial records. Wire transfers to a school in London. For three children. Do you know anything about that?"

Blair's face didn't change. She looked at me the way you'd look at someone who'd just asked a question with an obvious answer.

"Mom. I've known for five years. Everyone has."

I blinked.

"Everyone?"

"Riggs. Grandma Lorelei. It's not a secret. Dad has another family in London. Her name is Lilah. She's really sweet, actually. You'd like her if you gave her a chance."

The ballroom noise felt very far away.

"You've known for five years."

"Yeah. Dad told us when we were old enough to understand. He said you and him had an arrangement. That you were focused on the business and the New York house, and he needed someone who could be there for him emotionally. It's not that deep, Mom. Stop being so dramatic."

She turned back to her friends.

I stood there for a long time. The music played. People laughed. Waiters circulated with trays of hors d'oeuvres. I had planned every single detail of this night.

I walked back to the center of the ballroom. Gage was holding court near the stage, surrounded by board members and investors. He saw me and smiled. He raised his glass.

"Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention."

The room quieted.

"Twenty years ago, I married the most extraordinary woman I've ever known. Elise has been my partner, my foundation, and the reason this company exists. To twenty years of partnership. And to many more."

Everyone raised their glasses. I raised mine. I smiled.

Inside my evening bag, the Patek Philippe sat in its velvet box. I would never give it to him.

I knew that now.

I stayed until the last guest left. I thanked the coordinator. I approved the final invoices. I rode the elevator down to the lobby alone.

In the car, I took out my phone and searched for divorce attorneys in Manhattan.

The part of me that had endured everything for twenty years was gone.

What replaced it was cold, clear, and ready.
