Chapter 1

The mahogany door to Harrison's study was slightly ajar. I hesitated, documents clutched to my chest, my knuckles poised to knock. Four years of loving this man had taught me patience—to wait, to endure, to hope that someday he might look at me the way I looked at him.

"Mr. Evans asked for these immediately," his assistant had said, her eyes never quite meeting mine. "He's been in a mood all day."

I pushed the door open wider, my wrist unconsciously touching my other wrist—a nervous habit from childhood that never quite faded. The study smelled of leather and sandalwood, Harrison's signature scent that had once made my heart race with longing.

Now it froze me in place.

Harrison stood by the window, his tall frame silhouetted against the Manhattan skyline. But he wasn't alone. Everly's slender arms wrapped around his neck, her body pressed intimately against his. My sister—my adopted sister—tilted her face up to his with practiced ease.

"I've missed you," she whispered, her voice carrying in the quiet room. "These past weeks have been torture."

My fingers tightened around the documents until they crumpled at the edges. Four years of engagement, and I'd never once heard Harrison speak to me with such warmth.

"Claire's been suspicious," he murmured, his hands settling on Everly's waist. "I can't risk her finding out before the engagement party. My father insists we maintain appearances until after the merger."

Everly laughed softly. "Poor Claire. Always the dutiful fiancée, never the woman you truly want."

Harrison's chuckle cut through me like glass. "You know I've only endured this arrangement for the family's sake. You're the one who matters to me, Everly. You always have been."

I backed away silently, the documents forgotten in my trembling hands. The hallway stretched endlessly before me, each step taking me further from the life I'd spent four years building.

The ballroom glittered with champagne flutes and designer gowns. New York's elite had gathered to celebrate the engagement of Harrison Evans and Claire Brown—a union of two powerful families, a business merger disguised as love.

I stood alone at the edge of the crowd, a glass of untouched champagne in my hand. My navy gown—chosen carefully to please Harrison's exacting standards—felt suddenly like armor that was failing me.

"Darling, you look absolutely dreadful," Mrs. Brown's voice cut through my thoughts as she approached. My mother didn't bother hiding her disappointment. "Did you even try that new makeup artist I recommended?"

Before I could respond, Harrison appeared beside us, Everly on his arm. She wore a stunning white dress that seemed to mock the occasion.

"Mother," Harrison nodded politely before turning to Everly. "You look breathtaking tonight."

The orchestra began playing, and Harrison extended his hand—not to me, but to Everly.

"May I have this dance?" he asked, his eyes never once seeking mine.

As they moved across the floor, whispers rippled through the crowd. I stood frozen, champagne flute clutched so tightly I feared it might shatter.

"Such a shame," a woman nearby murmured. "Everyone knows he prefers Everly."

When Harrison finally approached me an hour later, his smile was practiced perfection. "Claire, there you are. I'd like you to meet some associates of mine."

I followed him to a group of businessmen, standing silently as he introduced me with polite disinterest. Then Everly appeared, and Harrison's entire demeanor changed.

"And this," he said, his hand possessively at Everly's waist, "is Everly Austin. The woman who truly matters to me."

The room blurred around me as Mrs. Brown's voice cut through the haze. "Claire, your hair is coming undone. And that dress—I told you it was too plain."

My childhood bedroom felt like a stranger's room now. I sat on the edge of my bed, surrounded by half-packed suitcases. The letter in my hands read simply:

*To the Brown Family,*

*I'm leaving New York. The engagement is cancelled. Please don't try to find me.*

*Claire*

My fingers trembled as I sealed the envelope. Four years of love, sacrifice, and silent hope—all reduced to a single page of paper.

I folded my last sweater and placed it carefully in my suitcase. Each item I packed felt like shedding another layer of the woman Harrison had expected me to be—docile, grateful, invisible.

The moonlight spilled through my window as I zipped the final suitcase closed. Tomorrow I would board a plane to Los Angeles, to a life where no one knew Claire Brown as the unwanted daughter or the fiancée who couldn't measure up.

As I placed the letter on my pillow, my phone buzzed with a text from Harrison: "Where are you? We need to discuss tomorrow's press conference."

I turned the phone face-down without responding. For the first time in four years, I chose myself over his expectations.

The door to my bedroom remained slightly ajar—just like Harrison's study had been hours earlier. But this time, I was the one stepping through to the other side.
