Chapter 2

I left the swinging kitchen doors behind and marched straight back to the head table. The venue staff buzzed around the perimeter, lighting votive candles and adjusting silverware, completely oblivious to the scene unfolding in the center of the room.

Caleb stood next to Rebecca. He held a delicate white orchid corsage in his hands.

"Hold still, Aunt Becca," Caleb said, leaning in.

Rebecca giggled, placing a hand lightly on my son’s arm. "Careful with the pin, sweetheart. This silk snags easily."

"I've got it," Caleb assured her. He pressed the pin through the champagne fabric, securing the flower right above her collarbone.

I stopped at the edge of the platform. The mother-of-the-groom corsage. I had picked out that specific orchid myself three weeks ago.

"Caleb," I said.

He jumped, dropping his hands. When he saw my posture, his shoulders slumped.

"Mom, please don't start," Caleb muttered.

"You're giving her my corsage," I said.

"She's going to be in the main photos," Caleb replied, adjusting the flower on Rebecca's dress. "The photographer said the white orchid pops better against her dress. You're wearing navy. It clashes."

"I am your mother. I paid for those flowers."

"And you're acting incredibly self-centered," Caleb snapped, his face flushing. "It's my wedding day. Can you just let us have this without making it a drama?"

"A drama?" I asked.

Mark turned around from his seat at the center of the table. He held a crystal whiskey glass, his tuxedo jacket unbuttoned.

"Linda, you're hovering," Mark said.

"My seat is by the kitchen doors, Mark."

"We needed to balance the tables," Mark said, waving his free hand dismissively. "You know half the guests arriving today are my corporate clients. Becca knows them well. She can help me entertain. You hate small talk anyway."

Rebecca offered a soft, apologetic smile that didn't reach her eyes. "I offered to sit in the back, Linda. Really, I did. But Mark insisted I stay up here."

"Right. Mark insisted."

Mark pointed at the floor near Rebecca’s chair. "While you're standing there, fix Becca's train. Someone is going to step on it."

I stared at his finger. "Excuse me?"

"The fabric," Mark said, his tone turning sharp and impatient. "The lace is catching on the chair leg. Bend down and untangle it before it rips."

"You want me to untangle her dress."

"I have to greet the regional vice president in five minutes. I don't have time to crawl around on the floor. Just help her out, Linda."

I looked at my husband of twenty-five years. Then I looked at my son, who was busy smoothing the lapel of his tuxedo, completely ignoring the insult his father just hurled at me.

Six months ago, I sat at a corner table in a crowded Italian restaurant, staring at a single lit candle on a slice of tiramisu. My fiftieth birthday.

Mark had stood up right after the main course, grabbing his coat from the back of the chair.

"Becca’s movers bailed," he had said that night, checking his gold watch. "She can’t lift that heavy furniture alone. I have to go help her."

"It’s my fiftieth birthday, Mark," I had said.

"It’s just a birthday, Linda. Stop being unreasonable."

He wore the exact same expression now. That same look of utter annoyance, as if my mere existence was an inconvenience to his schedule. For years, I had swallowed that look. I had compromised, apologized, and shrunk myself down to keep the peace in this family.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

I unclasped my silver clutch. I reached inside and pulled out the thick manila folder holding every vendor contract, the final receipts, the caterer's schedule, and the DJ's timeline.

I stepped onto the platform and pressed the heavy folder hard against Caleb's chest.

He fumbled to catch it, nearly dropping it on the floor. "What is this?"

"The vendor contracts," I said.

"Why are you giving them to me? You're supposed to coordinate with the venue manager."

"Not anymore."

Caleb frowned, holding the folder away from his body like it was toxic. "Mom, I don't know what to do with these. The caterer needs to be tipped at nine o'clock."

"Figure it out."

Mark slammed his whiskey glass onto the table. "Linda, what are you doing?"

"I'm leaving," I said.

"Don't be ridiculous," Mark scoffed. "The ceremony is over. The guests are walking into the lobby right now. Go sit at your table."

I didn't answer him. I turned my back on the head table and walked away.

"Mom!" Caleb called out. "If you walk out now, you're ruining my reception!"

I kept walking. I passed the towering floral archway I spent a week designing. I bypassed the greeting line forming near the coat check. I pushed through the heavy glass double doors and marched straight into the venue's parking lot.

The cool evening air hit my face, instantly clearing the fog in my head.

The valet rushed forward from his podium. "Mrs. Dawson? Do you need your car brought around?"

"Just popping the trunk, thank you."

I clicked my key fob. My sedan chirped, and the trunk popped open. I reached inside and grabbed my gym duffel bag. It had been sitting there since my Tuesday morning workout.

I slung the canvas strap over my shoulder and walked right back into the venue, ignoring the confused look on the valet's face.

I slipped down the side hallway and entered the ladies' lounge. It was completely empty, smelling strongly of expensive vanilla soap and floral hairspray.

I set the duffel on the long marble counter.

I looked at myself in the massive vanity mirror. The navy blue gown hugged my figure perfectly. Three thousand dollars. Custom fitted. I had starved myself for two months to look perfect for my only son’s wedding.

I reached around my back and found the zipper. I pulled it down.

The heavy silk fabric dropped to the floor, pooling around my ankles in a dark, shimmering circle.

I stepped out of it.

I unzipped the duffel bag and pulled out my faded gray sweatpants and an oversized white cotton t-shirt.

I pulled the sweatpants up over my legs. Tied the frayed drawstring. Slipped the soft cotton shirt over my head. The comfortable fabric hugged my skin, a stark contrast to the restrictive corsets and boning of the gown.

I bent down and scooped up the navy dress. It felt incredibly heavy in my arms.

I walked over to the large brass trash can in the corner of the lounge. I lifted the swinging lid and shoved the three-thousand-dollar dress inside. It filled the entire bin.

I walked back to the mirror.

I leaned in, resting both my hands on the cold marble counter. I stared at my reflection. No fancy gown. No corsage. Just me.

"Your wedding," I said to the empty room. "I'm not attending."
