Chapter 2

Alec responded with an impatient expression, "Last night we were discussing work-related matters. She's just an intern, and my concern for her is part of my responsibility as her supervisor. Can you stop making a fuss over nothing?"

"What about me? Do you even remember we just got engaged yesterday?" I retorted, the bitterness in my voice moving those around us.

He coldly replied, "So what? We're engaged now, why are you still making such a big deal out of this? What more do you want?" His words pierced my heart like a sharp sword. I couldn't take it anymore and stormed out.

Instead of going home, I went to a bar owned by a friend.

There, I didn't drink. I just sat there numbly until a man approached me. For a brief moment, I foolishly hoped it was Alec coming to find me.

When I saw his face clearly, I realized it was Alec's uncle, the renowned Sharon. I couldn't help but mock my own delusions – how could I have thought Alec would come looking for me?

Sharon broke the silence with his deep, rich voice, "Melody, why have you let yourself get into such a state?"

I was at a loss for words.

Sharon wasn't just Alec's uncle; he was also my former lover. When I was pursuing Alec, I was unaware of the truth.

It wasn't until I saw him at the engagement party that I learned the reality. Since then, I've always been wary of him.

After all, when we broke up, I left without a word, not even sending him a message.

By the time I snapped back to reality, I was already sitting in Sharon's car. The interior was eerily quiet, as if both of us were in a battle of wills, neither wanting to be the first to break the silence.

The Sharon before me had become even more composed. Rumor had it that he was making waves at the Winters Group headquarters, his position far surpassing that of Alec, who was merely the president of a subsidiary.

Upon reaching our destination, he let out a resigned sigh: "There's really no need to be so guarded with me. My contact information is still the same. You can call me anytime if you need anything."

After hearing his words, I paused inwardly for a moment, but ultimately chose to remain silent, only expressing my thanks before getting out of the car and leaving.

He didn't drive away immediately after I got out. His gaze lingered in the direction I had gone, motionless for a while, before he finally drove off.

When I reached my front door, I noticed it wasn't fully closed. Only Alec and I had keys. I was about to get excited, thinking Alec had come home.I heard intimate sounds coming from the room. As I approached, I discovered him embracing that intern inside. Witnessing this scene, I froze in place, unable to believe what I was seeing.

Daisy seemed to notice me. She flashed a provocative smile in my direction.

Alec had his back to me and hadn't realized I was behind him.

I heard the intern Daisy ask in a pitiful tone: "Mr. CEO, if your wife finds out, she'll be angry, won't she?"

His response was utterly indifferent: "Even if I lose her, there's nothing to regret."

Hearing his words, although I knew Alec didn't care for me, my heart still ached.

I couldn't help but question myself - was this really the man I had loved for three years?

Alec, as if sensing someone watching him from behind, turned his head slightly.

Seeing me standing there, he was stunned for a moment. Quickly regaining his composure, he said coldly: "What are you doing standing there? What? Do you want me to apologize? You embarrassed me so much at the company, I haven't even settled that score with you yet."

I brought a tearful tone to my voice as I said, "How can you do something like this and still blame me? Do you have a heart at all? It's been three years, and when have you ever looked back at me? Even our engagement was rushed, but I thought as long as we got engaged, it would be fine. I believed everything would be okay after we were engaged, but now you're doing this in our marital home? Have you no shame?"

My voice grew increasingly shaky. What I was witnessing was no small blow to me. The man I had loved for three years - in this moment, I questioned if I had fallen for the wrong person.

He let out a cold laugh and said to me, "If you can't handle it, then get lost. Did I ever beg you to be my lapdog?"

Hearing his words, I trembled with anger. I walked up to him and slapped him across the face. He didn't react immediately, frozen in disbelief that I would actually hit him. For a long moment, he couldn't utter a word.

Daisy looked at me in shock, seemingly surprised that I had slapped him.

He furiously spat out, "Pack up your trash and get the hell out of here!"

I ignored him. I quickly gathered my things and left that heartbreaking place. With my luggage in tow, I crouched outside the building, suddenly unsure where to go. The strength that had propelled me to leave seemed to vanish in an instant.
