Chapter 3

The bathroom stall door rattled as Elena slammed it shut, her hands trembling as she engaged the lock. She slid to the floor, tears coming in shuddering waves.A gentle knock on the bathroom door brought her back from grieving to reality.

"Elena? It's me.

""I'm fine, Olivia," Elena managed to say between breaths.

"You're clearly not." Olivia's voice was low, concerned. "I saw you running from the conference room. Your mother's out there making excuses about food poisoning.

""Of course she is," Elena said with a hollow laugh.

"Will you let me in?

"Elena reluctantly opened the door.

Olivia slipped inside, her eyes widening at Elena's tear-streaked face and the visible bruise."Jesus, what happened to your face?" Olivia asked, crouching beside her.

"Got attacked last night. Some guy with a knife." Elena wiped her eyes. "But that's not even today's biggest problem.

""What could possibly be worse than being attacked?

""We're bankrupt," Elena said flatly.

"Morgan Industries. All of it.

""What? That's impossible." Olivia sat beside her on the floor.

"The quarterly reports ""Were falsified. Dad's been cooking the books for two years." Elena's voice broke. "And now he's selling me to fix it.

""Selling you? What does that mean?

""Marriage. To Damien Cross.

"Olivia's jaw dropped. "Cross Industries? The corporate raider?""One and the same.

" Elena pressed her palms against her eyes. "He wants a merger, with me as part of the package deal.

""That's medieval. He can't actually expect you to ….

""Four thousand jobs, My father's freedom. Everything my family built.

""So he's not forcing you, he's just blackmailing you," Olivia said bitterly. "Can't we find another investor? A different merger partner?

""Dad says they've tried everything.

""And you believe him?

"Elena hesitated. "I don't know what to believe anymore."Her phone buzzed with a text from her father:

*He's waiting for an answer.

*"The contract expires in forty-eight hours," Elena said, showing Olivia the message. "But he wants an answer now.

"Olivia squeezed her hand. "Then make him wait. We'll find another option.

""Will you look over the contract with me? I need to at least know what I'm getting into.

""Of course," Olivia stood, helping Elena up. "But promise me you won't sign anything today.

""I promise," Elena said, though she already felt the walls closing in around her.

"Sir, the contracts have been updated per your specifications," Harriet said, placing documents on Damien's desk.

Damien continued gazing out his penthouse office windows toward Morgan Tower. "And the background check?

""Complete. Ms. Morgan's financials show no irregular activity. She's respected for her investigative journalism. Her personal life appears minimal.

""Meaning?

""Few serious relationships. Devoted to her work. Weekly dinners with her parents. Volunteers at a literacy program. Nothing complicated.

"Damien turned from the window. "Until last night.

""The police report has been handled discreetly," Harriet assured him. "The attacker remains in custody but unconscious.

No press release.""Ensure it stays that way.

""Of course." Harriet gestured to the contracts. "The terms are strict, as requested. Full control of Morgan assets. Pre-determined dissolution parameters.

""Add a requirement for joint attendance at major industry events," Damien said, reviewing a clause. "The narrative needs to be convincing.

""A love story, sir?" A hint of irony colored Harriet's tone.

"A strategic alliance with appropriate optics.

""And the timeline?

""Accelerated. Announcement by Friday. Ceremony within thirty days.

""That's unusually rushed, even by your standards," Harriet observed.

"Morgan Industries won't survive public scrutiny much longer," Damien's jaw tightened. "We need to move before the market catches on.

""You expect Ms. Morgan to agree to these terms?

""She will," he said, though doubt flickered briefly. "She understands what's at stake.

""And if she refuses?

""Plan B. Traditional acquisition. The company dissolves, assets liquidated, employees terminated."After Harriet left, the intercom buzzed.

"Charles Morgan on line one.

""Morgan," Damien answered coldly.

"She's reviewing the contract with her lawyer," Morgan said, his voice unsteady. "I need your assurance that if she agrees, the employees will be protected.

""I keep my word, unlike some."A heavy silence followed.

"She deserves better than this.

""Then perhaps you should have managed your company better."The line went dead. Moments later, the intercom buzzed again.

"Ms. Morgan is here to see you.

""Send her in."

Elena entered Damien's office, now dressed in a black suit.

He stood far against the twilight sky, hands clasped behind his back."Ms. Morgan," he said, turning. "I didn't expect you so soon.

""I'm not here to sign," she stated firmly. "I'm here to understand.

""Understand what?

""You." She stepped forward. "Last night you saved my life. Today you're threatening my family's legacy. Who does that?"Something shifted in his eyes.

"Business and personal matters are separate concerns.

""Not in marriage.

""In my world, they are." He moved to his desk. "Your father understands this.

""My father is desperate.""And you're not?"The question hung between them, impossible to deny."Tell me about your last marriage," she changed tactics. "The one that ended...'efficiently.

'"His posture stiffened. "That's not relevant to our arrangement.

""It's entirely relevant.

"After a long pause, he said, "It served its purpose. For both parties.

""And did she hate you by the end?" Elena pressed.

Something flickered in his eyes. "We rarely spoke enough to generate such passion.

""So that's what I have to look forward to? A silent partnership with a stranger who sees me as a business transaction?

""Would you prefer false promises of affection?" His voice remained clinical. "I respect you enough to offer honesty, Ms. Morgan.

""Elena," she corrected. "If we're discussing marriage, you might as well use my name.

"He inclined his head slightly. "Elena."The way he said it sent an unexpected heat through her veins."I haven't given you an answer yet," she reminded him.

"No. But you will.

"Elena's phone chimed. She looked down at a news alert: *Breaking: Cross Enterprises Announces Major Investment in Morgan Industries.*"What is this?" she demanded, holding out the screen.

"The beginning. The market responds to inevitability, Elena.

""You're forcing my hand!

""I'm ensuring you make the rational choice." He stepped closer. "Sign the contract tonight, and tomorrow we announce our engagement alongside the partnership. Your company survives. Your father avoids prosecution. You maintain your position at the journalism division with full editorial independence."

"Editorial independence?" Her breath caught. "That wasn't in the contract.

""It is now. Consider it a wedding gift.

""Why would you offer that?

""Because your division operates better with autonomy," he said formally. "And because I respect your work.

""You just said my investigative pieces cost more than they generate.

""They do. That doesn't mean they lack value.

"Elena studied him, searching for the trap. "And what do you get in return? Besides Morgan Industries."His eyes held hers, and she glimpsed something behind the frost a hunger that had nothing to do with business.

"A partner," he said simply. "Someone who isn't afraid to stand her ground."The implications sent a tremor through her that had nothing to do with fear.

"That sounds almost human, Mr. Cross. I thought this was just business.

""Business is conducted by humans, Elena. Even I recognize that.

""So what happens now?" she asked.

"You have until morning to decide." His tone returned to businesslike. "My driver will take you home. The revised contract will be delivered tonight.

""And if I say no?

""Then four thousand people lose their livelihoods, your father faces fraud charges, and your mother experiences the social death she fears more than actual mortality.

""You've thought of everything," Elena said bitterly.

"It's my job to anticipate outcomes.

"Elena turned to leave but paused at the door. "Why me? There must be easier acquisitions.

"His expression remained unreadable, but something shifted in his voice. "Perhaps I prefer a challenge.

""Or perhaps you're just as trapped as I am," Elena suggested. "The market expects Cross Industries to keep growing. You need Morgan's connections and distribution network as much as we need your capital.

"A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "Perceptive. You'll make an interesting partner, Elena Morgan.

""I haven't said yes yet.

""You will.

""You sound very certain.

""I am." His eyes met hers. "Because beneath your righteous indignation is a pragmatist who understands sacrifice.

""You don't know me," Elena whispered.

"I know enough to recognize a survivor when I see one." He stepped closer, near enough that she could smell his cologne. "The question isn't whether you'll sign, Elena. It's what you'll do afterward.

""Meaning?

""Will you accept defeat? Or will you find a way to turn this situation to your advantage?" He studied her face. "I suspect the latter. It's what I would do.

"For the first time.

Elena saw something in Damien Cross that wasn't cold calculation—a flicker of genuine curiosity, perhaps even respect."Goodnight, Mr. Cross.

""Damien," he corrected. "If we're discussing marriage, you might as well use my name.

"Elena left without responding, the echo of her own words returning to her like a challenge. Outside in the hallway, she leaned against the wall, heart racing. She'd come seeking answers about the man who might become her husband. Instead, she'd glimpsed something more dangerous than his icy exterior—something that might burn if she got too close.
