Chapter 3

[SOPHIE'S POV]

The offer letter from Cross Holdings arrived as a twelve-page digital document, followed by a hard copy delivered to my door by private courier at seven in the morning.

It was not a token gesture or an empty promise meant to spite Evan.

Every single line was drafted with lethal precision. The title was Brand Strategy Director. The compensation package was forty percent higher than my Carter Group salary, accompanied by equity units and a guaranteed discretionary budget for the boutique hotel division. Most importantly, the operational autonomy clause gave me final sign-off on creative direction, vendor selection, and personnel hiring.

I didn't have to run my instincts past three committees. I didn't have to wait for Evan to decide whether my ambition made him uncomfortable.

I read the contract three times before taking a cab to the Cross Holdings tower in Midtown.

Damian’s office sat on the fifty-fourth floor, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass that overlooked the entire southern tip of the island. Unlike Evan’s cluttered, performatively busy desk, Damian’s space was stark and organized. A slate-gray sofa, a low marble table, and two dark leather chairs facing the glass.

Damian looked up from his tablet when his assistant ushered me in. He wore a charcoal suit without a tie, looking just as composed as he had in the stalled elevator.

"You read it," he said, gesturing to the chair across from his desk.

"Every word," I said, sitting down and setting the leather folder on the marble surface between us. "It’s higher than I asked for. The budget alone is twice what Carter Group allocated to Project Meridian."

Damian leaned back, resting his arms against the leather chair. "I don't underfund things I intend to win. Do you have questions?"

"One condition," I said.

His dark eyes narrowed slightly, curious but patient. "Go ahead."

I looked directly into his face, keeping my voice steady. "I won't bring you anything from Carter Group. No pitch decks, no internal financial models, no supplier contracts, and no client contact lists. I won't tell you Evan's cost thresholds or discuss his unpublished launch strategies."

I paused, making sure he understood the boundaries.

"If you hired me hoping for corporate espionage to torpedo his fall pipeline, tear up the contract right now. I don't work that way."

Damian didn't look offended. He didn't even blink.

"Good," he said, his response immediate and clean. "I want you."

He held my gaze, the words settling between us with unexpected weight.

"Not his files."

A sudden stillness dropped over the room.

My breath caught in my throat for half a second. The phrase hung in the air, stripped of corporate distance, ringing with an intensity that had nothing to do with commercial real estate.

Damian noticed the silence. A faint, knowing line formed around his eyes, and a quiet laugh escaped his throat.

"For the job," he added smoothly. "Obviously."

The subtle warmth in his tone caught me off guard. For three years, every interaction with Evan had been a careful calculation of emotional debts and professional hierarchies. Damian spoke with an effortless clarity that made the air feel sharper.

"Obviously," I echoed, picking up the pen from the folder.

I uncapped it, turned to the final page, and signed my name on the signature line.

I handed the folder across the desk. "I'll see you Monday, Mr. Cross."

"Damian," he corrected, taking the folder. His fingers brushed against mine for a fraction of a second as he took the leather binder. "Welcome to the team, Sophie."

Two hours later, I walked into Carter Group and sent my formal two-week resignation notice to human resources and Evan’s executive inbox.

I didn't expect to work the full two weeks. In our industry, moving to a competitor usually triggered an immediate security escort from the building. I spent the morning clearing my personal items from my desk: a potted succulent, a small brass clock, and a framed photograph of the Manhattan skyline.

I was dropping a stack of blank notebooks into a cardboard box when my office door slammed open.

Evan stood in the doorway, his chest rising and falling, his tie loosened. He shut the door behind him with enough force to rattle the frosted glass.

"What is this?" he asked, holding up his phone where my resignation email was displayed on the screen. "HR flagged this ten minutes ago. You resigned?"

"My notice is in your inbox," I said calmly, taping the bottom of the second box. "It's effective immediately. HR agreed to waive the notice period since I'm moving to an industry peer."

Evan stared at me, his jaw working as if struggling to find the right script. "You're really going to Cross?"

"Yes."

"You know what this looks like," he said, taking two steps toward my desk, his voice dropping into that familiar, suffocating mix of authority and rebuke.

"It looks like I accepted a better position," I replied without looking up from my packing tape.

"It looks like you're intentionally sleeping with my rival," Evan snapped.

The room went completely cold.

The tape dispenser froze in my hand.

For three years, I had excused his emotional neglect. I had accepted his patronizing delays, his secret engagement, his quiet theft of my intellectual labor, and the calculated cruelty of his balance-sheet worldview. I had taken every blow with quiet dignity because I believed dignity was the only thing I had left to protect.

That single sentence shattered whatever restraint I had kept.

I set the tape on the desk, stood up straight, and looked Evan Carter dead in the eye.

"Say that again," I said softly.

Evan flinched, the fury on his face instantly faltering as he realized what had slipped past his teeth. "Sophie—"

"You announced an engagement to Olivia Bennett four weeks after we broke up," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet office with absolute clarity. "You spent three months negotiating an equity merger behind my back while sleeping in my bed. And the second I take a job based on my own credentials, you reduce my entire career to whose bed you think I'm in?"

Evan swallowed hard. His face flushed a dark, mottled red, the polished executive persona entirely stripped away.

"I didn't mean it like that," he said hurriedly, reaching toward my arm. "I was angry. Nathan told me Cross was offering you a director title, and with the photo from the gala—"

"Don't touch me," I said, stepping back before his hand could make contact.

I walked past him to the office door, gripped the brass handle, and pulled it wide open, exposing our conversation to the entire executive floor.

"Get out."

Evan froze. He glanced over his shoulder at the open hallway, where two junior analysts suddenly dropped their heads over their keyboards.

Panic flashed across his features—real, unscripted panic. For three years, whenever our voices rose, I was the one who lowered mine. I was the one who protected his reputation, smoothed his edges, and swallowed my anger so he could maintain his posture as the flawless heir apparent.

"Sophie, please," he whispered, stepping closer, his voice cracking with genuine desperation. "We can talk about this. I can match whatever Damian offered. I'll give you the director title. We can pull Project Meridian back from Nathan—"

"Get out of my office, Evan."

"Sophie, I didn’t mean—"

"I don't care what you meant," I cut him off.

His mouth remained open, the apology dying on his tongue. It was the first time in three years I had spoken over him. It was the first time I hadn't stayed to let him explain away his cruelty with corporate logic.

He stood there for five agonizing seconds under the cold fluorescent lights of the hallway. When he realized I wasn't going to back down, he turned on his heel and walked away, his shoulders rigid.

I picked up my box, handed my keycard to the receptionist, and walked out of the building without looking back.

The next morning at eight-thirty, Cross Holdings issued a formal press release to the major financial wires.

*Cross Holdings Appoints Sophie Lane as Brand Strategy Director to Lead New Luxury Boutique Hospitality Concept.*

The announcement carried my photograph, a summary of my background, and an outline of the flagship property set to debut in downtown Manhattan.

At the very bottom of the release, the public launch date was printed in bold silver font.

October fourteenth.

I looked at my phone on the kitchen counter, where three dozen frantic text messages from Carter Group executives were already lighting up the screen.

October fourteenth was the exact date Evan had scheduled for the global unveiling of Project Meridian.
