Chapter 3

"Take it off," I told myself, gripping the unfamiliar metal circling my left ring finger.

The glaring midday sun sliced through the gap in the hotel curtains, catching the polished surface of the plain band. My throat tightened. I tugged at the ring, but it refused to slide past my knuckle. The metal felt heavy, a permanent anchor dragging me back to the chaotic blur of last night.

"It stays."

I jerked my head toward the sound. The man from the bar lay next to me, his dark hair tousled against the white pillows. He didn't look away. His bare chest rose and fell with a steady, calm rhythm.

"I don't even know your name," I said, dropping my hand to my lap.

"You knew it well enough to sign the registry." He nodded toward the nightstand.

I leaned over, ignoring the dull ache behind my temples, and grabbed the glossy photograph resting beside my phone. An Elvis impersonator grinned in the center of the frame, his arms draped over our shoulders. The man and I held a certificate between us.

A flash of memory hit me. The scratch of a cheap plastic pen against paper. My hand shaking violently as I formed the letters, the exact same tremor that had gripped me when I signed Gerald's marital settlement agreement. I had traded one contract for another in the span of twelve hours.

"This is a mistake," I said, tossing the photo onto the mattress. "A drunken joke. People get these annulled every day."

"I don't make jokes," he replied, sitting up. The sheet pooled at his waist, revealing a jagged scar cutting across his ribs. His eyes were entirely sober. No bloodshot veins, no heavy lids. "And I don't sign things I plan to cancel."

Before I could argue, my phone vibrated against the wood of the nightstand, emitting a harsh, rhythmic buzz.

The screen flashed. Gerald.

I stared at the glowing letters. A cold knot formed in my stomach.

"Answer it," the man said.

"I have nothing left to say to him."

"Then let him talk," he challenged, leaning back on his elbows. "Let's hear how a man sounds after he steals his wife's future."

I picked up the phone and swiped the green icon, bringing the speaker to my ear.

"Who were you with last night?!" Gerald shouted.

I flinched. The sound cracked through the speaker, loud enough for the room to hear. In twenty years of marriage, Gerald never raised his voice. He used cold silence. He used disappointment. He treated me like a bad investment he was waiting to write off.

"Good morning to you too, Gerald," I said, keeping my voice flat.

"Don't give me that," Gerald snapped, his breathing erratic. "Marcus pinged your location. You're at the Bellagio. My security team pulled the casino floor footage from last night. Who is the man in the charcoal suit?"

My grip on the phone tightened. "You tracked my phone?"

"You're a liability right now," Gerald retorted. "You signed a binding legal document. You agreed to a clean break. You do not get to run off to Vegas and drag my firm's reputation through the mud on some pathetic bender."

"Your firm's reputation?" I asked. "Is that what Rose is calling it these days?"

"Leave Rose out of this."

"You brought her into my home," I said, my voice hardening. "You drained my retirement account to buy her a penthouse. You don't get to dictate my itinerary anymore."

"You have no money! You surrendered the accounts!" Gerald yelled. His voice actually shook. It thrilled me. The invincible CEO of Shaw Capital was finally cracking. "I want to know who you left that bar with. Now."

"I met a stranger," I said, watching the man in the bed. "We had a drink. We took a walk."

"Footage shows you getting into an elevator with him at two in the morning," Gerald pressed, the panic bleeding through his usual corporate armor. "Evelyn, listen to me. You are emotionally unstable. Men in casinos prey on women like you. Women who look desperate. They will drain whatever assets you think you have left."

"I look free," I said.

"You look like a fool," Gerald countered. "I'm freezing the supplementary card. I'm having my assistant book you a commercial flight back to New York. You will go to the house, pack your things, and disappear quietly."

"No."

"I am not asking you, Evelyn. If you don't tell me who that man is, I will have my lawyers file an injunction against you by noon. I will claim you were mentally unfit when you signed the settlement. I will tie you up in court until you are begging me for grocery money. I will ruin whatever dignity you have left."

"Try it," I challenged.

"Give me his name!" Gerald roared.

A warm, calloused hand wrapped around my wrist.

I stopped breathing. The man pulled the phone from my stiff fingers.

"She's with me," he said into the receiver.

His voice carried a lazy, gravelly weight, thick with sleep but laced with absolute authority.

Silence stretched over the line. I could hear Gerald's ragged breathing through the earpiece.

"Who the hell is this?" Gerald demanded. "Put my wife back on the phone."

"Your ex-wife," the man corrected, leaning back against the headboard. "And she's currently busy with your new majority shareholder. Watch your tone."

"What?" Gerald stammered. The aggression vanished, replaced by genuine confusion. "What are you talking about? Who is this?"

"Check your cap table, Shaw. I own you now."

He tapped the red button. The screen went black.

He tossed the phone back onto the bed. It bounced once and landed near my knee.

"You didn't have to do that," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"He was boring me," he replied.

"He's going to scorch the earth," I warned him, pulling the sheet up to my chest. "Gerald doesn't lose. If he thinks you're a threat to his company, he will send a fleet of corporate attorneys to bury you. He has judges in his pocket."

"Let him try."

"You don't understand," I said, my voice rising. "He runs Shaw Capital. He has millions in liquid assets and a board of directors who will cover up anything he does. You just painted a target on your back for a woman you met twelve hours ago."

"I know exactly who he is."

"Then why would you provoke him?" I asked. "Why would you tell him you're a shareholder? He's going to tear apart every registry until he finds you."

The man reached under his pillow.

"He won't have to look hard," he said.

He pulled out a thick, textured square of paper. He held it out, wedging it between his index and middle finger.

I stared at the business card.

"Take it," he commanded softly.

I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly as I took the card from his grip. The paper was heavy, expensive. The midday sun caught the gold-foil lettering pressed into the center of the matte black surface.

I read the name.

My chest seized. All the air left my lungs in a single, painful rush.

I knew this name.

Gerald kept a private stack of Forbes and Wall Street Journal magazines locked inside the bottom drawer of his study. He obsessively tracked every merger, every acquisition, every hostile takeover this man orchestrated. This exact name was printed in bold ink across every single cover.
