Chapter 1

Claire's POV

"Mommy, is Daddy coming? He promised he wouldn't miss my surgery."

Emily's lips were the color of a bruise. Her small fist twisted the cuff of my wool sweater so hard the yarn stretched.

"He's coming, baby. Keep breathing for me."

I burst through the emergency doors of Riverside Community Hospital with her in my arms. A nurse in blue scrubs ran toward us.

"How old?"

"Five. Congenital heart defect. She has surgery scheduled at Children's next week. Her cardiologist is Dr. Patel."

"Put her down here. Oxygen, now."

They pressed a clear plastic mask over Emily's face. It fogged with each fast, shallow breath. Wires went onto her chest. The monitor started to beep.

A doctor with gray at his temples pushed a clipboard at me. "I'm Dr. Okafor. Sign here, Mrs. Mercer. Consent for treatment."

I scribbled my name with one hand. With the other, I dialed Daniel again.

Ringing. Ringing. Voicemail.

I checked the screen. Seventeen calls. Seventeen times, no answer.

Daniel owned Mercer Medical Transit. Three months ago he'd booked Emily a private pediatric ICU ambulance on standby, for exactly this. All he had to do was pick up and send it.

Emily's voice came muffled through the mask. "Is Daddy in a meeting again?"

I swallowed. "Probably, sweetheart."

The day she was born, Daniel had rested his big hand on her tiny chest. Tears in his eyes. *Nothing in this world matters more than our girl, Claire. Nothing.*

I hit his name again.

---

My phone buzzed at 9:05.

Finally. I tore it open.

It wasn't an answer. It was a photo.

Daniel stood in a hotel ballroom, holding six-year-old Noah high in his arms. Lily leaned her head on his shoulder. All three of them wore matching cream sweaters. Behind them floated a gold balloon: BEST DAD EVER.

The cake read *Happy Birthday, Our Little Prince.*

Our.

Lily was his college friend. The single mom he always had to help. Noah was her son.

My thumbs shook as I typed. *Emily is in the ER. She can't breathe right. Where are you??*

Three dots. Then:

*Lily's son needs a father figure tonight. Stop making everything about Emily.*

I read it twice. Then a third time.

"Mrs. Mercer?" The nurse, Tessa, touched my elbow. "You okay?"

"Fine." My voice came out flat. "I'm fine."

But I was counting. The echo appointment in March. *Lily doesn't drive, Claire.* The cardiology checkup in May. *Noah needs a man around, he's struggling.* Last month's blood work. *Lily had an emergency. A pipe burst.*

And every single time, the same line. *You're seriously jealous of a little boy? Grow up.*

I glanced at Emily. Her hand lay open on the white sheet, palm up. Reaching for someone who wasn't there.

I slid my fingers into hers. She squeezed weakly.

---

Dr. Okafor came back at 9:20. He didn't waste words.

"Dr. Patel wants her transferred to Children's immediately. Her oxygen is dropping. We don't have pediatric cardiac surgery here."

"There's an ambulance booked for her. A private pediatric unit. Mercer Medical."

Tessa frowned at her screen. "That's the thing. It shows canceled."

"What? No. That's not possible."

"I'm already calling regional transport for another unit. But I wanted you to know."

I was at the front desk before she finished. My hands closed on the metal edge of the counter.

"Print it. Please. Whatever you have on that transfer."

The clerk slid a page across. Red block letters at the top.

**STATUS: CANCELED.**

Below it: *Requested by account holder. Patient no longer requires transport.*

The account holder was Daniel Mercer.

I called the dispatch line I knew by heart. I used to answer it myself, back when the company was two guys and one van.

"Mercer Medical dispatch, this is Ron."

"Ron. It's Claire."

A pause. "Oh. Claire. Hey."

"The pediatric unit booked for Emily. Where is it?"

Another pause, longer.

"Ron. My daughter is turning blue. Where is it?"

He let out a breath. "Mr. Mercer personally canceled your daughter's transport and redirected the unit to the Maple Grand Hotel."

The metal bit into my palms. "Why?"

"He said the little boy, Noah, might have a severe allergic reaction. Nuts in the cake or something. He wanted a full medical team on site. Just in case."

"Just in case." I laughed. It came out high and strange, and a man in the waiting room turned to stare. "He parked an ICU ambulance outside a birthday party. Just in case."

"Claire, I'm sorry. He's the boss. I figured you knew."

"Did the boy have a reaction?"

Silence.

"Ron."

"No. The crew's just sitting in the lot."

I hung up.

---

"Backup transport is twenty minutes out," Dr. Okafor said. "Twenty minutes is a long time for her right now. I won't lie to you."

"Then don't."

He nodded once and left.

The monitor beeped faster. A yellow light blinked on the screen. I pulled the chair to the bed and sat so close my knees hit the rail.

Emily pushed her hand under her pillow. She pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

"I brought it for Daddy."

I smoothed it open. Crayon. Three stick people with big round heads. Me in purple. Daniel, tall, in blue. Emily in the middle, holding both our hands. Behind us, a white box on wheels with a red cross.

"That's Daddy's ambulance," she whispered. "As long as Daddy has ambulances, somebody can always save me. Right?"

My throat closed.

"Right, baby."

She smiled and shut her eyes.

I held the drawing in one hand and the cancellation notice in the other. The paper crumpled in my fist.

Seven years ago, Daniel had a business plan and no money. Banks laughed at him. So I sold my mother's house. The yellow one, with the porch swing she'd painted herself. I signed the papers the week after her funeral.

That money bought Mercer Medical its very first ambulance.

He'd kissed me in the dealership lot. *This is ours, Claire. Everything I build, I build for you.*

I opened my messages. Pressed the microphone. Kept my voice low so Emily wouldn't hear.

"Daniel. Emily's oxygen is dropping. The doctor says she might not make it to surgery. They're getting another ambulance, but it's twenty minutes away. Twenty minutes she might not have."

I paused. Watched her tiny chest rise and fall under the wires.

"Daniel, you didn't just miss our daughter's emergency. You gave away the ambulance I bought you."

I let go of the button. Sent.

Delivered.

I stared at the screen.

Then one small word appeared beneath it.

*Read.*

I waited. One minute. Two. The monitor chirped. Somewhere down the hall, a cart rattled past.

Nothing.

No dots. No call. No *I'm on my way.*

"Mommy?" Emily's eyes fluttered. "Did Daddy answer?"

My phone lit up in my hand.

A new message from Daniel.

*Don't call me again tonight. Noah needs me.*
