Chapter 1

I was in a senior leadership meeting when the news hit me: my husband, Marlin Delgado, had fallen from the thirteenth floor on set.

I dropped everything and rushed home, only to find him and his whole team perfectly intact, throwing a party and singing.

Marlin shot me a sideways look and said, irritated, “I told you to come home last night and you wouldn't. What are you doing here now?”

“Why don't you just go die out there?”

Before I could get a word out, the familiar inner voice came, one line after another:

【Ha, my wife really does love me after all.】

【She heard something happened to me and came running back this fast.】

【Come on, wife, come snuggle into my arms like you used to, tell me you love me, that you can't live without me for the rest of your life.】

I looked down at the cut I'd gotten rear-ending the car in front of me because I was rushing to get home, and this time I didn't give Marlin what his inner voice wanted.

I just slowly drew a document out of my bag:

“Since you hate me so much, let's get divorced.”

……

Marlin's brows drew together, like it still hadn't registered.

The others caught the wrongness in the air and scrambled to patch it over.

“His wife's just worn out from work, she's talking nonsense.”

“Right, come on, Marlin said it without thinking, don't take it to heart.”

They must have assumed I'd brought up divorce on purpose, just to get Marlin's attention.

I couldn't really blame them for thinking that.

After all, in the ten years I'd been with Marlin,

I'd been like a puppet that did whatever pleased him.

When Marlin told me to go east, I never went west.

Because of the inner voice, I took his rage as a gift and gave everything I had to be good to him.

But now I didn't want to be a puppet for anyone to pull around anymore.

“Right. I am very tired.”

I calmly took their words and looked at the man sitting in the middle of the couch:

“So, Marlin, let's get divorced.”

Once Marlin understood I wasn't joking, the wine glass in his hand cracked under his grip.

He gave a small scoff “Summer Pruitt, you actually think that highly of yourself?”

“Divorce? Nothing would make me happier.”

“If you hadn't begged me to marry you back then, I wouldn't have spared you a single glance!”

Under the sharp, cutting words ran an inner voice pleading with every line.

【What's wrong with my wife, why is she suddenly asking for a divorce, don't you love me anymore?】

【No, wife, hurry up and say you don't want to leave, I want to be with my wife forever.】

I'd lived ten years of this life, everything said backward from what was felt.

Marlin was a textbook obsessive personality.

The less he cared about a person or a thing, the gentler he treated them.

He held his lover to impossibly high expectations, and the moment they fell short of what was in his head, he'd show his displeasure by fighting, smashing things.

Once I could hear Marlin's inner voice, I couldn't help but be moved by it.

After that, every time we fought, Marlin didn't have to do a thing.

I only had to listen to that worthless inner voice and I'd soothe myself all on my own.

During that time, I tried to get Marlin to say the love inside him out loud.

He always pushed me away, over and over, and then screamed inside his own head.

【Wife, wife, I didn't mean it, hurry and come hold me.】

【Wife, why aren't you coming over yet, come give me a kiss, let's make up.】

Marlin's little assistant fell asleep during a livestream and caused a serious on-air incident, and Marlin, without a word, signed off on a month of leave for her, not a single reproach.

But me, just because I hadn't heard what he said, he cuffed me to the headboard for three days and three nights.

Marlin's little assistant mixed up the outfits a brand had sent over and cost Marlin a thirty-million penalty for breach of contract, and he only smiled and patted her head and said it was fine.

My mother was gravely ill and needed three hundred thousand for surgery, and just because I hadn't kissed him on my way out the door, he ignored it.

And so my mother would never get out of that bed again.

Marlin, this time, I'm not cleaning up after your lies anymore.
