Chapter 3

The velvet sofa in the VIP room was the color of dried blood. I sat on the edge of it, back straight, hands folded in my lap, watching the bank officer slide the platinum card out of its protective sleeve.

"You're certain about this, Ms. Henderson?" She held the card between two fingers like it was something fragile. "This is a joint account with a primary holder at Sutton Corp. Once we process the freeze and destroy the secondary card, the primary holder will be notified automatically."

"I'm counting on it."

She studied me for a moment. Mid-fifties, reading glasses on a gold chain, the kind of woman who'd seen enough messy divorces and bitter separations to know when someone had already made up their mind.

"Very well."

She picked up the small steel scissors from the tray beside her keyboard. The blades caught the overhead light — a clean, surgical flash.

The first cut went through the center of Eric's name. The second split the card lengthwise, severing the chip in half with a faint crunch that sounded like a walnut cracking.

Two pieces of platinum plastic fell onto the mahogany desk. The holographic strip still shimmered on one half, catching colors that didn't exist anymore.

"The freeze is effective immediately," she said, sweeping the pieces into a small envelope. "All pending authorizations on the secondary line will be declined. Would you like a confirmation receipt?"

"Email is fine."

She typed something, clicked twice, and folded her hands. "Is there anything else I can help you with today?"

I stood. "That's everything."

The lobby was hushed as I walked through it — thick carpet, recessed lighting, the faint hum of money being quietly managed. I pushed through the glass doors and stepped into the cold.

It was done. Four years of watching charges roll in — dinners I wasn't invited to, gifts I never saw, a wine club subscription that shipped to an address I'd never visited — all of it, severed with two cuts of a scissors.

The apartment was exactly as I'd left it that morning. Empty. Not the kind of empty that meant no one was home. The kind that meant someone had already started leaving.

Three suitcases stood in a row by the front door. Black, hard-shell, lined up like soldiers waiting for orders. Everything I owned that mattered fit inside them. Everything I didn't had already been boxed and sent to a storage unit in Queens.

The living room stretched out behind me — cream walls, a sectional sofa we'd picked out together at a showroom in SoHo, a glass coffee table that still had a ring stain from Eric's whiskey tumbler. The bookshelves were half-bare. My side was gone. His side — biographies of CEOs, a signed football in a display case, three bottles of scotch he kept "for guests" and drank alone — sat untouched.

I made coffee. The machine gurgled and hissed, filling the kitchen with the only warmth the apartment had left. I poured it into a plain white mug, carried it to the couch, and sat down.

Then I waited.

My phone lay face-up on the glass table. The screen was dark. The apartment was silent except for the refrigerator's low drone and the distant sound of traffic fourteen floors below.

It took eleven minutes.

The first notification lit up the screen like a flare.

I took a sip of coffee.

Another sip.

He'd tried the jewelry store twice. I set the mug down and watched the red alerts stack up, one after another, each one a small door slamming shut.

Seven. Nine. Twelve. Fourteen notifications in under three minutes.

Then the screen changed. Not a text. Not an alert. A call. The name filled the display in bold white letters.

*Eric Sutton.*

The phone vibrated against the glass, rattling faintly, spinning a quarter-inch to the left. I watched it complete one full rotation before it stopped.

He hung up. Called again. Hung up. Called again.

Four times in ninety seconds.

On the fifth call, I picked up the mug, took one more slow sip, and set it back down on the ring stain his whiskey had left.

I tapped the green button.

"WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?"

His voice hit my ear like a car alarm. I held the phone an inch away and let him burn through the first wave.

"Hayley! The card is frozen — every single transaction is bouncing. I'm standing in the middle of a goddamn restaurant with a client, and my card just got rejected like I'm some—"

"It's not your card, Eric."

"—broke college kid at a gas station. Do you have any idea how that looks? Fix it. Now."

"It's not your card," I said again. "It never was. The account is in my name. You were an authorized user. I removed you."

Silence. I could hear the ambient noise of the restaurant behind him — silverware clinking, a woman's laugh, the muted thrum of conversation.

"You can't do that."

"I already did. The bank processed it an hour ago."

"This is — Hayley, this is insane. You're acting out because of some — what, some tantrum about the resignation? I'll fix the Orion situation, okay? We can talk about—"

"There's nothing to talk about."

"Unfreeze the card."

"No."

The word sat between us, clean and final. I reached forward and slid a folded sheet of paper from beneath the coffee table's edge. Cream-colored stationery, a real estate agency's logo embossed at the top. I unfolded it and smoothed it flat on the glass surface, right next to my phone.

*Appointment Confirmation — Property Valuation & Listing Consultation. Saturday, 10:00 AM.*

The address printed below it was this apartment. Our apartment. The one with both our names on the lease and only my signature on the mortgage.

"Hayley." His voice had shifted. Lower. Controlled. The boardroom register, the one he used when he thought he could still negotiate. "Let's not do anything we can't undo."

I looked at the three suitcases by the door. At the half-empty bookshelves. At the confirmation letter spread flat on the table, the agent's phone number circled in blue ink.

"That's funny, Eric."

I let the pause stretch until I could hear him breathing.

"I thought that's exactly what we've been doing."

The line crackled. He started to say something — my name, maybe, or another demand dressed up as reason.

I ended the call.

The screen went dark. The apartment went quiet. And on the table, the real estate confirmation sat perfectly still, waiting for morning.
