Chapter 1

My mother-in-law said she didn’t see me as an outsider and wanted to entrust to me the family’s finances. So, on the very first day of my marriage, she transferred all the household funds into a shared account that I managed.

I was reluctant, but she persuaded me with heartfelt words.

“We’re one family—there’s no need to draw lines between us.”

I didn’t expect the money to be mine in name only, yet impossible to manage.

Everyone in that house seemed incapable of understanding human language.

Later, my mother-in-law wanted to buy a house.

The whole family dragged me along to the real estate office to make the down payment.

She insisted, “We’ve saved up 500,000 already.”

She turned to me and added warmly, “Aisha, after paying the down payment, we’ll use the rest to buy a car for you—it’ll make commuting easier.”

I could only shake my head helplessly. “I told you already, there’s no money saved.”

My husband, Alessio, exploded in rage, pointing a trembling finger at me. “All our salaries go to you! We don’t even spend much—how the hell is there no money?!”

He demanded to audit the finances and even threatened divorce.

I didn’t indulge him. “Fine, let’s divorce! I’ve had enough of managing this damned family!”

I pulled out the household account book and laid it all bare.

Everyone was stunned—except for my mother-in-law.

——

After the dramatic fallout at the real estate office, I went home and immediately crashed into bed, sleeping like a rock.

But my husband, who came home later, began banging and kicking the door like a madman, jolting me awake from my dreams.

The moment I opened the door, Alessio grabbed me and dragged me out.

Both my in-laws were sitting there—my father-in-law’s face was particularly sour.

Breathing heavily, Alessio demanded, “Where did all the money go?!”

Annoyed, I rubbed my face. “I already told you—you spent it!”

Was this family deaf and dumb?

That morning, they had all taken me to see a house.

They were thrilled about a two-bedroom unit—perfect for a family.

The down payment was four hundred thousand.

My mother-in-law nodded repeatedly, acting as if it was no big deal.

Just when I thought she had a hidden stash, she turned to me and held out her hand. “Aisha, hand over the family savings.”

“And with what’s left, we’ll buy you a car too.”

Seeing my hesitation, she emphasized, “Don’t worry—we’ll put your name on the property deed.”

I stared at her, bewildered. “Mom... when exactly did we ever save up that kind of money?”

Tsk. The audacity.

I handed over the entire balance of the account. There were only three hundred nineteen dollars and twenty cents.

My husband instantly transformed into a roaring beast.

“I earn eight thousand a month! My mom gets three thousand five hundred! My dad earns seven thousand! We’ve been married for three years! We should’ve saved at least five hundred thousand! Did you secretly funnel it to your parents?!”

He screamed so loud my ears rang.

But strangely, I felt nothing. Because whoever manages the money knows the truth: This family simply didn't listen.

I had no intention of being their scapegoat.

I turned around and left them standing there.

But Alessio refused to believe a word I said. As soon as we got home, he picked another fight.

His voice was so loud it practically scared the sleep out of me.

He whipped out a calculator and started punching numbers furiously.

“I earn eight thousand. My mom earns three thousand five hundred. My dad earns seven thousand. In three years, that’s six hundred sixty thousand!"

"And I only asked for five hundred thousand—but all you gave me was three hundred bucks?!”

He jabbed his finger at me like he wanted to poke a hole through my head.

He was furious—but I was even more pissed.

“What, is your family made of immortals? You don’t eat, don’t drink, don’t poop, and just survive in thin air?”

“Did your high school teacher teach you math? You only calculate income but ignore expenses?!”
