Divorcing My Absent Husband Novel Cover

Divorcing My Absent Husband

I believed my marriage was flawless—until I brought our baby girl home. Through sleepless, bleeding nights, my CEO husband Ryan barricaded himself in the guest room, showering praise on his twenty-four-year-old assistant, Madison. The breaking point wasn't sheer exhaustion—it was his blame. So I hired a doula on his credit card, packed my bags, and left behind a night log and divorce papers. Now Ryan is frantic to prove he can be a father and husband. But he's too late—another man already showed me what it means to share the load.

Chapter 2

POV: Hannah

I stood there with the suitcase between us, the hallway lights casting harsh shadows across the floor. Ryan's face darkened instantly, his jaw locking tight as he stared at the rolling case like it had personally betrayed him.

"What the hell is this?" he demanded, voice low and edged with fury. "You're seriously making me move into the guest room? For what, Hannah? So you can play house with some imaginary rules?"

I didn't answer, just tightened my grip on Ellie as her tiny body shifted against me. The gas had finally quieted her, but her eyes stayed heavy-lidded, searching my face. Ryan's gaze flicked to her once, then back to me, his shoulders stiffening under the soft gray sweater.

"Madison stayed up all night helping me revise the report," he continued, the words tumbling out like he needed to fill the silence. "That's why I'm wrecked. If I don't get these final shots in tonight, the board meeting tomorrow falls apart. And you expect me to come home to a house with no clean shirts? No fresh laundry at all? This is ridiculous."

I met his eyes for a second, but the weight of everything from earlier—the camera flashes, the way he'd handed Ellie over like it was nothing—settled heavy in my chest. He thought blaming Madison excused this? After promising to share every bit of it?

I turned without a word, heading toward the kitchen. The wooden floors creaked under my steps, a reminder of the life we'd built here. Ryan followed a few paces behind, his boots thudding once, twice, before he stopped.

"You're really going to ignore me?" he asked, voice rising just a notch. "No explanation about why you're so tired? I get it, Hannah. Post-surgery. But acting like this? Moving me out like I don't belong here?"

I didn't stop, didn't explain anything. Two hours of sleep, broken every time Ellie stirred, had left me hollow and numb, but that was mine to carry. I reached the kitchen, flicked on the overhead light, and stopped at the counter where his coffee machine sat. The beans were still in the hopper, full and fresh. I opened the hopper, scooped the beans back into their bag until the machine was empty, and carried the bag to the sink. The plastic bag crinkled loudly as it filled, the scent of fresh beans mixing with the cleaner I used to wipe down surfaces.

"No more coffee for you unless you buy your own," I muttered under my breath, the words sharp enough to carry. I didn't bother preparing dinner. The fridge stayed closed, the stove untouched. Instead, I dumped the milk bottles from the sink into the dishwasher, not bothering to load them properly. His dress shirts from earlier sat in the hamper by the door, untouched. The laundry basket overflowed with yesterday's loads, but I left it there. No folding, no washing, no ironing.

Ryan's footsteps stopped right outside the kitchen doorway. "Hannah. What are you doing? Those are my shirts. The ones I need for tomorrow."

I kept my back to him, emptying the last of the beans into the trash can with a final sweep of my hand. "Then buy new ones."

He let out a short laugh that didn't reach his eyes. "Buy new ones? With what? This is our money, our life. You're acting like a child throwing a tantrum. Madison's the one who stayed up, not you. You know that."

I didn't respond. The coffee machine sat empty now, its lights dark and useless. I wiped the counter once, briskly, then walked past him toward the hallway. His hand shot out, grabbing my wrist lightly, not hard enough to bruise but enough to stop me.

"Stop this," he said, pulling me back toward the living room. "We need to talk about this. You can't just do whatever you want. The guest room is temporary. Come on, let's get Ellie settled and then figure this out."

I pulled away gently but firmly, my voice steady even as my back protested from the earlier rocking. "Temporary? You're already in there, Ryan. The clothes are yours. The coffee is gone. And I'm done pretending this is still our home."

He stared at me, his face flushing with that mix of anger and disbelief. "Done pretending? After everything we've been through? The surgery, the hospital, me sitting by your side? Now you're cutting off the basics? This isn't fair."

Before I could answer, he dropped his hand and headed back to the guest room, muttering something about how he needed sleep too. I followed to the bedroom, Ellie finally asleep in her crib across the hall. I changed into my own pajamas, the fabric soft against my skin, and lay down without turning on the lamp. The house felt different already, smaller in the quiet.

At 1 AM, the front door opened with a soft click, then closed. Footsteps padded through the hallway, heavier than usual, like he'd walked straight from his car. I lay in bed, eyes open, listening. The living room light flipped on, then off again. He moved to the kitchen, the sound of drawers opening, closing. Milk bottles clinked in the sink. Plates scraped the counter. He cursed under his breath, low and frustrated.

"Jesus, Hannah," he called out, voice carrying through the walls. "What the hell is this? Empty table? No dinner waiting? And the dishwasher's a mess with all these bottles. I come home starving after staying up all night for you."

I didn't move, didn't answer. My phone lit up on the nightstand with a notification, but I ignored it for now. He appeared in the doorway, hair messy from running his hands through it, eyes red-rimmed from exhaustion. "Come on. I'm not in the mood for this tonight. You know I need to rest for the meeting."

I sat up slowly, the sheets rustling. "Then rest in the guest room. Like you said, that's where you belong now."

He took a step closer, stopping at the foot of the bed. "Don't be like this. I froze your authorized-user card. No more charges without my approval. You'll need me to approve anything you want. Think about that."

The words hung in the air, meant to sting, to make me back down. I swung my legs out of bed, crossed to the desk in the corner where the laptop sat, and opened the joint account app. The screen glowed blue in the dim room. I logged in with the shared credentials, the familiar prompt for two-factor verification. My half of the post-marriage savings showed in the balance—solid, mine to control after years of building it together. I selected the transfer option, typed in the amount, and confirmed. The transaction processed instantly, the confirmation email pinging to both our phones.

Ryan watched, his face shifting from irritation to confusion as he checked his own phone. His expression changed again, eyes widening at the alert. "What the hell is this? Hannah, you transferred money? Like, a lot? From our account?"

I picked up my phone, read his text message without replying. The words blurred on the screen—his shock, the questions about what I was doing. I locked it, set it face down, and turned off the bedside lamp. The room plunged into darkness, only the faint glow from the hallway leaking under the door. I slipped back under the covers, pulling the blanket up to my chest, the mattress cool against my skin. The silence settled around me, heavy and final.
