Chapter 2

The heavy fire door slammed shut behind me, cutting off the muffled uproar of the ballroom.

I didn't stop moving. I took the concrete stairs two at a time, my heels clicking sharply against the industrial steps. I pushed through the lower exit into the cold, cavernous air of the underground parking garage.

The silence down here was suffocating, broken only by the low hum of fluorescent lights and the distant drip of runoff water.

Then, the shock wave hit.

A violent shudder tore through my chest, ripping the air straight from my lungs. My knees buckled.

I caught myself against a thick concrete pillar, the rough surface scraping my bare forearm. My breath hitched, coming in ragged, shallow gasps as the full physical backlash of a shattered bond detonated inside me.

Seven years.

For seven years, Damien’s Alpha mark had lived beneath my skin, woven directly into my nervous system. When an Alpha forcibly severs a bond, he leaves behind an open psychic wound. My blood felt like boiling acid, surging through my veins, while an icy numbness crept into my fingers and toes.

My wolf whimpered in the dark recesses of my mind, curling into a tight, bleeding ball.

I slid down the damp pillar, my silk gown pooling around me on the oil-stained concrete.

Seven years ago, in a cheap, drafty apartment with nothing to our names but a shared desk and a dream, Damien had buried his teeth into the curve of my shoulder. He had held me tight against his chest, his heart hammering against mine as he whispered into my hair.

*“Every milestone, every building, every single dollar we make—your name will be right beside mine, Mara. Forever.”*

I let out a harsh, dry breath that sounded dangerously close to a sob.

All of it was gone. The sweat, the eighteen-hour workdays, the red-eye flights to secure private funding—reset to absolute zero in a matter of seconds. I was discarded in front of millions of people so he could take another woman’s family money.

A wave of dizziness washed over my eyes, tinting the garage edges in dark gray.

My vision began to blur. Cold sweat coated my neck. I rested my forehead against my knees, waiting for the darkness to pull me under.

*Click. Click.*

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the empty asphalt.

The sound wasn't hurried. It carried a calm, deliberate rhythm that cut through the haze in my skull.

I forced my head up, my muscles trembling under the effort.

A tall silhouette stepped out from between two parked luxury sedans. The overhead strip lights cast long, sharp shadows across the broad shoulders of an immaculate charcoal suit.

Roman Cross.

The CEO of Cross Enterprises. Damien’s fiercest business rival, the ruthless predator who had spent the last three years systematically cutting Blackwood Group off from the southern shipping corridors.

He stopped five paces away, his dark eyes locked onto me.

I tried to push myself up, my palms slipping against the cold floor. "Don't..."

Roman didn't answer right away. He closed the distance between us with quiet, fluid grace, stopping just two feet short. Then, he sank down onto one heel, lowering himself to eye level.

He didn't crowd me. He didn't tower over me. He simply crouched there, his posture steady and completely unreadable.

In that exact instant, the final remnants of Damien’s cedar-and-smoke scent evaporated from my skin, completely purged by the severed bond.

A sudden, violent jolt tore through the air between us.

It wasn't the agonizing burn of a broken bond. It was an electric shockwave that slammed directly into the center of my chest.

The scent of rain-drenched earth, ozone, and bitter dark chocolate flooded my senses with such intensity that my breath caught in my throat.

My dormant, wounded wolf abruptly snapped its head up inside me, letting out a sharp, answering pulse.

A Second-Chance Mate.

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. It was an ancient, nearly mythical quirk of our biology—a second fated match granted only when a soul bond was violently extinguished.

And the universe had handed mine to Roman Cross.

Roman’s jaw hardened instantly.

A low, involuntary rumble vibrated in his chest. His pupils dilated until the warm amber in his irises was swallowed by pitch black. The pure, primal instinct of an unmated Alpha flared beneath his skin, rolling off him in waves so potent the hair on my arms stood on end.

Every instinct in him screamed to claim, to pull me against him, to cover the scent of the man who had just mutilated my spirit.

I shrank back against the concrete wall, clutching my knees to my chest.

Roman didn't move.

His fists clenched at his sides, the knuckles turning stark white as he fought his wolf into submission. The muscles in his neck strained, cords standing out against his collar as he held himself perfectly still.

He didn't reach out. He didn't even lean an inch closer.

When he spoke, his voice was a low, controlled gravel, stripped of all corporate arrogance.

"Do you want a doctor?"

The question caught me completely off guard.

I stared at him, my pulse racing, my defenses screaming at maximum volume. I had just been gutted by the man who claimed to love me for seven years. I wasn't about to let his mortal enemy see me as an easy target.

"Stay away from me," I choked out, my voice raspy and hoarse. "Don't touch me."

Roman didn't flinch. His gaze remained locked on my face, taking in the pale sheen of cold sweat on my skin and the defensive wall I was trying desperately to build.

He stayed silent for several long, suffocating seconds. The only sound in the garage was the ragged rhythm of my breathing.

"Fair," he said quietly.

Without breaking eye contact, he reached up and unbuttoned his tailored wool overcoat. He slipped his arms out of the sleeves with smooth, unhurried precision.

He didn't drape it over me. He didn't force the contact.

Instead, Roman set the heavy coat down on the clean patch of concrete right beside my knee. The warmth radiating from the fabric carried his scent—rich, steady, and utterly grounding.

Then, he pushed himself up to his full height.

He didn't drop a business card. He didn't try to leverage my condition, nor did he mention the disaster that had just unfolded upstairs on live national television.

"Take your time," Roman said, his tone flat and even.

He turned on his heel.

His footsteps clicked against the pavement as he walked away, his broad back disappearing smoothly into the dim corridor leading toward the private elevators.

The heavy security door hissed open, then clicked shut behind him.

The garage went completely quiet again.

I sat frozen on the concrete floor, staring at the dark coat resting inches from my hand.

For three years, Damien had painted Roman Cross as a heartless, calculating monster who would tear out an opponent's throat for a percentage point.

Yet when I was at my most vulnerable, broken and bleeding on the floor, the monster had kept his hands to himself.

I looked down at the dark fabric, the sudden, heavy silence wrapping tightly around me.
