Chapter 16

The war between Carter Group and Kingsley Corporation had officially become the most talked-about conflict in the global business world. Financial news channels debated every move. Analysts built endless theories about which empire would collapse first. Investors circled the battlefield like vultures waiting for weakness.

But the truth was far more complicated.

This was no longer just a corporate war.

It was personal.

Sophia Carter stood in the Carter Group boardroom, watching the massive digital screens that displayed the latest market shifts. Her team had been working almost nonstop for forty-eight hours. Charts fluctuated wildly as investors reacted to the unprecedented counter-acquisition attempts between the two rival companies.

Daniel stood beside her, studying the projections carefully.

"We've successfully blocked Kingsley's share expansion in three markets," he said. "But they're compensating in Asia."

Sophia nodded slowly.

"Alexander expected that."

Daniel glanced at her.

"You say that like you know exactly how he thinks."

Sophia's lips curved faintly.

"I used to be married to him."

Daniel sighed.

"Yes, but most divorced couples don't attempt to destroy each other's companies afterward."

Sophia crossed her arms slightly.

"Alexander started the takeover."

Daniel smirked.

"And you responded by trying to buy his company."

Sophia didn't deny it.

The truth was simple.

She had always been competitive.

But Alexander Kingsley brought something else out of her.

Something dangerous.

Across the city, Alexander Kingsley stood in his office overlooking the skyline. His board had just finished another emergency meeting. Every executive in the room had looked tense.

Every executive except Alexander.

He appeared almost relaxed.

Victoria Laurent sat on the edge of the desk, flipping through a financial report.

"You realize what's happening, don't you?" she said.

Alexander glanced at her.

"What?"

Victoria tossed the report onto the desk.

"This war between you and Sophia Carter is driving the entire market insane."

Alexander shrugged slightly.

"Investors love volatility."

Victoria narrowed her eyes.

"This isn't volatility. It's obsession."

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the window.

"You think I'm obsessed?"

Victoria smiled faintly.

"No."

She paused.

"I think both of you are."

Alexander didn't respond.

But the silence itself was answer enough.

Later that afternoon, Sophia received unexpected news.

Daniel burst into her office holding a tablet.

"You need to see this immediately."

Sophia looked up.

"What now?"

Daniel placed the tablet in front of her.

The headline made her freeze.

GLOBAL INVESTMENT CONSORTIUM ENTERS CARTER–KINGSLEY CONFLICT

Sophia frowned.

"That wasn't supposed to happen."

Daniel nodded grimly.

"A third player just entered the battlefield."

Sophia read the article quickly.

A massive international investment group had begun purchasing shares in both Carter Group and Kingsley Corporation.

That meant one thing.

Someone was attempting to manipulate the outcome of their war.

Sophia leaned back slowly.

"Who's behind this?"

Daniel shook his head.

"The ownership structure is hidden behind several shell corporations."

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

"This isn't random."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

He paused.

"Someone is using our conflict as cover."

Sophia stood and walked toward the window.

For the first time since the war began, she felt something unfamiliar.

Unease.

That evening, Sophia attended a private investor reception.

Events like this had become common during the corporate conflict. Powerful financiers wanted front-row seats to the battle between Carter Group and Kingsley Corporation.

But tonight's event had a different atmosphere.

Quieter.

More watchful.

Sophia stepped inside the elegant hall and immediately sensed the tension.

People were watching her.

Not with curiosity.

With calculation.

She moved toward the balcony for fresh air.

And that's when she heard a familiar voice behind her.

"You're attracting dangerous attention."

Sophia turned.

Alexander Kingsley stood in the doorway.

His expression was serious.

Not mocking.

Not competitive.

Serious.

Sophia frowned slightly.

"Should I be worried?"

Alexander stepped closer.

"Yes."

Sophia studied him carefully.

"You're not joking."

"No."

Alexander leaned against the balcony railing.

"That new investment consortium entering the market..."

Sophia nodded.

"I know."

Alexander lowered his voice.

"They're not here to invest."

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

"Then what are they here for?"

Alexander looked directly at her.

"To destroy whoever loses this war."

Sophia's breath slowed.

"And how do you know that?"

Alexander hesitated for a moment.

Then he said quietly,

"Because I've dealt with them before."

Sophia crossed her arms.

"You're telling me we're both being manipulated?"

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

Sophia studied him for several seconds.

"You expect me to trust that information?"

Alexander sighed softly.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"But I expect you to verify it."

Sophia hesitated.

Because something in his voice felt genuine.

And that was far more dangerous than anything else.

The balcony grew quiet.

City lights shimmered far below.

Alexander and Sophia stood only a few feet apart.

For the first time since their war began, neither of them seemed interested in attacking the other.

Sophia spoke first.

"If what you're saying is true..."

Alexander nodded.

"Then our conflict is being used as bait."

Sophia's voice hardened slightly.

"So what do you suggest?"

Alexander looked at her carefully.

"A temporary alliance."

Sophia laughed softly.

"You're serious?"

Alexander didn't smile.

"Yes."

Sophia shook her head.

"You launched a hostile takeover against my company yesterday."

Alexander shrugged slightly.

"You responded by trying to buy mine."

Sophia couldn't argue with that.

Still...

"An alliance?" she repeated.

Alexander stepped closer.

"Until we identify the real enemy."

Sophia stared at him.

"And after that?"

Alexander's eyes darkened slightly.

"After that..."

He paused.

"We can go back to trying to destroy each other."

Sophia almost smiled.

Almost.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The tension between them had shifted.

It wasn't just rivalry anymore.

There was something else there.

Something that had always existed beneath the surface.

Something neither of them wanted to admit.

Alexander finally broke the silence.

"You know what the real problem is?"

Sophia raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"You still think I'm your enemy."

Sophia tilted her head.

"Aren't you?"

Alexander studied her carefully.

"Not in the way you think."

Sophia's heart skipped slightly.

She hated when he spoke like that.

Because it made her question things she didn't want to question.

Alexander suddenly reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

Sophia froze.

His touch was warm.

Familiar.

Dangerous.

"You shouldn't do that," she said quietly.

Alexander didn't move his hand.

"I know."

Sophia stepped back slowly.

"You're still the same arrogant man."

Alexander smiled slightly.

"And you're still the only woman who can challenge me."

Sophia turned toward the balcony railing again.

"You're impossible."

Alexander stepped beside her.

"And you like that."

Sophia didn't answer.

Because the worst part was...

He might be right.

Later that night, Sophia returned home again.

But this time she couldn't focus on strategy reports or financial charts.

Her mind kept replaying the conversation with Alexander.

Someone else was manipulating their war.

Someone powerful enough to influence global markets.

Daniel arrived shortly after.

"I got the same report," he said.

Sophia looked up.

"So you believe Alexander?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I believe the situation is bigger than we thought."

Sophia nodded slowly.

Then she said something unexpected.

"We may need him."

Daniel blinked.

"You're considering his alliance proposal?"

Sophia looked out the window again.

"For now."

Daniel sighed.

"This is going to get complicated."

Sophia's expression remained calm.

"It already is."

Her phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Alexander.

She opened it slowly.

The message was short.

"If we're going to survive this war, we need to talk tomorrow."

Sophia stared at the screen.

Outside, the city lights shimmered quietly.

The corporate battlefield had suddenly become far more dangerous.

Because now there was a hidden enemy watching them both.

And whether they liked it or not...

Sophia Carter and Alexander Kingsley might have to fight on the same side.

For now.
