Chapter 3

Even the account name of a bank card I had used for twenty years had quietly been changed to Brandon’s.

To the outside world, I seemed to be living in a happy, harmonious family.

But in truth, I was all alone.

After spending a night at Ethan’s place, I went to the company the next day to pick up a few things.

The moment I stepped into the lobby, I was met with a wave of sneering comments from the staff.

“She really hooked a rich guy and still doesn’t know how lucky she is. Filing for divorce? Dumber than a pig.”

“So what if Mr. Shaw likes cuddling a teddy bear to sleep? That’s nothing! I like them too!”

“She probably got tired of him because he’s gained a bit of weight. Wouldn’t be surprised if she’s got seven or eight boy toys stashed somewhere.”

The way they looked at me was like I was some monstrous criminal—full of judgment, scorn and disgust.

Before I could say a word, a voice spoke up behind me.

“Enough. All of you—shut your mouths. Who gave you the right to gossip like that? Get back to work.”

It was Brandon.

Only then did the employees disperse, grumbling under their breath.

“Honey,” he said, stepping forward. “I bought you a watch. Try it on.”

He pulled a sleek, brand-new wristwatch from his bag.

Gasps echoed instantly around the room.

“A Patek Philippe limited edition! Only three were ever made—and all were sold to mysterious collectors!”

“Mr. Shaw must’ve pulled every string he could to get that watch. He’s so thoughtful.”

Everyone looked on with admiration and envy.

But my expression remained cold as I refused, “I’m just here to get my heirloom. You can keep the watch—for the teddy bear.”

The words hit hard.

Brandon froze.

The employees were instantly outraged, calling me heartless and ungrateful.

I ignored them all and headed upstairs without a glance.

When my parents passed away, the only thing they left me was a pendant—said to ward off evil.

I had always worn it around my neck.

Later on, Brandon often complained that his office felt eerie, like something strange was lurking.

So I took off the pendant and hung it in his office.

Ever since then, the strange noises stopped.

But now, he didn’t deserve to have it.

As soon as I stepped into his office, I saw Bella playing with my son.

“Mrs. Huxley,” she greeted sweetly,

“Thank goodness you’re back. Nothing’s more important than a happy life. Come take a look at your son! He's so adorable—how could you possibly bear to abandon him?" Bella held my son as she stepped in front of me, trying to sound gentle.

"Move." I frowned in disgust.

"Mrs. Huxley," she said, still smiling stiffly, "This is your son. Don’t tell me you won’t even spare him a glance?"

"Get out of my way!" I snapped, shoving her aside and walking straight into the office. I reached up and took the pendant down from the wall.

That’s when the sound of crying pierced the air.

I turned around—Bella and my son had both fallen to the floor.

Just then, Brandon walked in with several senior executives—and saw it all.

He rushed forward to scoop our son into his arms, quickly checking him over.

Only after confirming the boy was unharmed did he finally breathe again.

"What happened?" His gaze darted between me and Bella.

Lowering her head, Bella spoke softly, "I just wanted Mrs. Huxley to take a look at her son, but she didn’t want to. She pushed me away… It's my fault. If I’d stood more steadily, I wouldn’t have fallen."

What?

Without hesitation, Brandon turned around and slapped me hard across the face.

His voice roared with fury. "How could you become so heartless? That’s your own son! He’s only a year old—what if he’d gotten seriously hurt?"

But my expression didn’t waver.

"Say whatever you want," I replied coldly. "Even if he died from the fall, it wouldn’t be my problem."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Brandon trembled with rage, eyes brimming with tears.

Bella pointed a finger right at my face and snapped, "Do you even hear yourself? Cursing your own son to fall and die—how heartless can you be? You're beyond saving!"
