Chapter 1

Beth Anderson, my mother, was seriously ill and put into a hospital just around my graduation.

Her only wish was that I could have a stable job and a harmonious marriage.

I was supposed to work in the same company with my husband, Derrick Randel, only if the mail notifying my employment wasn't withdrawn before I could reply.

Immediately, I rushed to his company and inquired about the HR department, only to be told that I had given up the job myself.

In the end, Derrick employed my best friend, Katrina Moore.

When I managed to reach the hospital, Beth had passed away after hearing this shocking news.

Since I couldn't get him through on the phone, I chose to bombard him with messages. However, he posted a series of wedding dress pictures shot with Katrina on Instagram.

A few hours later, I received his impatient reply.

Derrick: [Can you please stop applying for the job in my company so frequently? It seems that my company has no other employees.]

After handling Beth's funeral alone, I returned to the apartment I shared rent with Derrick, feeling exhausted.

I received no other messages except for the cold satire he sent.

However, the wedding dress pictures on his Instagram gained more and more likes.

He graduated a year earlier than me, and we got married when he graduated last year, which was only known to our parents.

But I was not the heroine in today’s wedding photos.

I was once suspicious of him cheating on me with Katrina and questioned him about that.

And every time, he reassured me with sincere swears.

Staring at their wedding dress pictures, I could only feel heartbroken witnessing their unconcealed love.

Now, whenever I closed my eyes, all that came to my mind was the image of Beth dying with regret.

As time passed by, I could finally hear the clicking sound from the door.

Derrick walked in with the intoxicated Katrina in his arms, his face full of joy.

When he saw me sitting in the living room, a moment of panic gleamed in his eyes.

Then, he frowned and asked coldly, "Why are you here instead of taking care of Beth in the hospital?"

My eyes were fixed on his hands around Katrina, and I couldn't help but sneer. "Am I here getting in your way of getting laid?"

Derrick looked irritated as he heard my provocation; still, he gently put Katrina on the sofa.

"Stop being so sarcastic. There's nothing between us, so put away your unreasonable jealousy!" he said.

"Derrick, you've posted your wedding dress photos on Instagram. Do you think I shouldn't ask or do you think I don't deserve to do that?" I said.

My voice was hoarse when I spoke, and my red and swollen eyes were filled with despair of his betrayal.

But after lighting a cigarette irritably, he retorted confidently, "I have known her almost the same time I met you. If I want to cheat on you with her, it should happen a long time ago. Now, I even begin to doubt whether you have a brain when you still suspect me after I explain to you thousands of times."

My eyes, dry from crying, were now aching.

Hearing the argument between Derrick and I, Katrina whimpered and slowly opened her eyes.

As I glared at this so-called best friend of mine who had spent four years with me, disappointment brimmed with my heart.

When she finally regained her soberness, she took out a bank card and put it in my palm softly.

"This is the company's wedding subsidy. You must be short of money as Beth is seriously ill now. Please take it," she said.

"Don't blame Derrick. We all just graduated and can't think of any other way to get the money for her. Luckily, their company only needs our wedding dress photos to give out subsidies. Otherwise, we really can't get away with it." Katrina added.

As she was talking, Derrick had considerately poured her a cup of warm water and placed it on the table.

This scene made me feel like a clown.

Countless times before, when I came back from the hospital, the house would be in a total mess, and Derrick was not even willing to wash the plates in the kitchen sink, not to mention that he would pour me a glass of water and let me rest.

Seeing the antipathy on my face, Katrina put on a pitiful face and said, "Did I explain too late? Please don't be angry with Derrick. If you really have to blame someone, just blame me. I just graduated and don't have much money. To help you with the expense of Beth's treatment, I have no choice but..."

After she finished speaking, her eyes turned red with grievance.

Then, she took out a USB flash drive from her bag and put it in my hand.

"This is the original file of the wedding dress photos. You can destroy it. Please don't be mad at him. Derrick did that out of kindness. We have been together for four years, and you should know the best that I will never betray you."

My hands started shivering uncontrollably, and I clenched my teeth to hold back the tears.

"Save it. You don't have to delete the photos since you two can use them at your wedding in the future. After all, you just graduated and have no money. Just save as much money as you can," I replied.

Apparently, Derrick's expressions showed that he was not content with my response.

I was unwilling to give in and asked, "Will you give me a chance to enter your company if I agree to divorce Derrick and make way for your love?"

I didn't want love or best friend anymore.

The only thing I wanted to do was to have a proper job and let Beth rest in peace.
