Divorce A Cruel Wife
Chapter 3
Bryce became angry.
"Zane, are you ever going to stop? What's the point of repeatedly lying to Jade? Don't you just want to keep her by your side?"
"But this time, Jade and I really have an urgent matter. Can you please stop causing trouble?"
Jade reached the end of her patience and glared at me fiercely.
"Zane, don't make trouble here. Get out of our way!"
Still kneeling, I humbly held onto her legs.
"Are you really going to disregard your mother's life just to look at the houses with him?"
"Jade, they're calling again."
Bryce held his phone, looking anxiously at Jade.
In just a second, Jade made a decision between me and Bryce.
"Zane, you're heartless, but I am not. I'll do Bryce this favor."
After saying that, she was about to leave the hotel with Bryce.
I grew up without a mother. It was Sarah who let me know what motherly love was like. I absolutely could not watch her die!
I took a deep breath, took out a knife, and held it against my own neck.
I shouted loudly, "Jade, if I lie about Sarah being stabbed, I will die miserable!"
"Come back with me. She's your biological mom. Only you can perform the surgery. I beg you to save her life."
I humbled myself, but I had no regrets.
But Jade just glanced at me indifferently.
"Drop the act. I just checked my mom's location and she's still at school. Everything is normal."
This time, Jade walked away with Bryce without looking back. No matter how loud I shouted behind her, it was useless.
I sat on the ground in despair, feeling totally drained. Waves of helplessness and despair crashed over me.
At this moment, Dr. Harris called, and as soon as I answered, I heard her furious roar.
"What the hell are you and Dr. Brown doing? We agreed to meet in two hours, but why didn't you show up? Sarah is dead. She's dead!"
I didn't hear the second half of her words. I just felt dizzy, and my whole body went numb.
I sat in the hotel for I didn't know how long. Then I drove alone to the hospital.
I knelt beside Sarah's body, crying and slapping myself.
"It's all my fault. I couldn't bring Jade back."
I called my wife to inform her of Sarah's death, but there was no answer on the other end.
Dr. Harris wiped away her tears and conveyed Sarah's last words.
"Sarah said if you can't reach Jade by phone, you will be responsible for the funeral arrangements. She also said that the cemetery is expensive and don't buy it. You gotta bury her in a vacant lot in front of the old house in the suburbs."
Dr. Harris looked at my stunned expression and sighed.
"Sarah has known about you and Jade all these years. She knew you went to find Jade before she died and said that with Bryce by her side, you wouldn't be able to bring her back."
So Sarah knew everything.
She knew that her daughter would trust a stranger more than her own husband.
Or, in other words, Jade and I had been married for three years, but we were not happy. Sarah saw it and felt bad.
Sarah was so hopeful that Jade and I would be great together, and she silently kept emotions leashed within for three years.
I couldn't help but burst into tears.
I saw Jade, but I failed to bring her back. If I could make it, Sarah wouldn't have died.
I hate Jade for being indifferent and cruel and myself for being helpless.
I knelt in the morgue all night, but Jade still did not answer her phone.
According to Sarah's last words, I took care of everything and never sent a message to Jade or made a phone call in the meantime.
Jade left behind her mom and looked at houses with her first love. I thought Sarah would find it annoying.
I arrived home with the urn, and it was already dawn.
When I opened the door, the smell of alcohol filled the air. Jade and Bryce were both sleeping soundly on the sofa.
Jade actually brought Bryce home!
No wonder I couldn't get through to her.
I was furious.
I had no feelings for Jade now. Her mother just passed away, and she was actually having fun with another man.
I put down the urn and punched the heavily drunk Bryce in the face.
Bryce woke up in pain and screamed, "Are you crazy, Zane?"
...
Jade heard the noise, sobered up, and stood between me and Bryce.
She gently touched Bryce's face and checked if he was hurt, her eyes full of tenderness. Then she glared at me like an enemy.
I looked at Jade, who was in a mess, and pointed at the urn on the table.
"Because of your biased and gullible nature, your mom has already passed away. Now, because of him, you didn't even get to see her for the last time. Are you even human?" I said with sorrow and indignation.
A crisp sound rang out.
I got slapped in the face.
Jade looked at me fiercely.
"Zane, I have tolerated you for a long time. My mom is my weak spot indeed, but I absolutely cannot tolerate you repeatedly using my mom against Bryce."
"Last time, you lied about my mom being stabbed with a lunatic. And now, you even bring out her ashes. You are being ridiculous!"
I looked at Jade in disbelief.
"You still don't believe that these are your mom's ashes?"
I found it ridiculous, but I couldn't laugh.
Jade and Bryce drank at home and didn't see me and Sarah there. Didn't they have any suspicions at all?
Jade was a skilled surgeon and was extremely observant. It was impossible for her not to notice that something was wrong.
But she just refused to call the doctor and verify what I said.
Jade looked away from my sad and angry face and picked up the urn on the table.
"Don't put on that look on your face. Is there powdered milk inside? Looks like it."
With that, she poured some into the wine.
"Don't drink!"
But Jade didn't listen to me. She always went against me.
My mind was blank, and I felt like I couldn't breathe properly.
I felt like the sky was falling.
Jade, who was drunk, sneered at me.
"Zane, this is powdered milk. How dare you deceive me?"
"I have said countless times that Bryce and I are just ordinary friends. You always doubt me and restrict my freedom, which only makes me dislike you more."
At this moment, I couldn't spare time to argue with her. I was taking her to the hospital for gastric lavage.
