Chapter 1

"Two minutes to broadcast!" the floor manager yelled, waving a clipboard at the camera crew. "Where is the bride?"

Through the monitor on the side wall, I watched the live feed streaming to three million screens.

Kai stood at the altar.

His black tuxedo was spotless. His hands were clasped in front of him, resting near a boutonnière of white roses. Whenever a camera zoomed in, his lips curved into the exact smile of a man desperately in love.

"Look at him," the makeup assistant sighed, dabbing powder beneath my eyes. "He looks like he might cry if you take another second, Miss Caldwell."

I stared at the screen. My hands stayed dead flat against the tulle of my gown.

"Yes," I murmured. "He's very good at looking devoted."

The girl didn't catch the flat edge in my voice. Nobody did. To the world, the Caldwell-Vandermeer merger was the union of the century. Two empires forged under God and Wall Street.

They thought I was sweating out pre-wedding jitters.

They didn't know I spent last night running through the storm with mud on my knees.

***

Twelve hours earlier, rain beat against the glass of the penthouse suite like thrown gravel.

I had slipped up the private elevator around midnight to fetch my grandmother’s sapphire necklace from the master safe. The ceremony was set for noon, and I wanted the stones locked in my case before the stylists arrived at dawn.

The suite door stood unlatched. A narrow slit of amber light spilled across the hardwood.

Then came the laugh.

High, wet, and unmistakable.

"Harder, Kai," Marnie groaned from inside. "Don't get soft on me just because you have to play saint tomorrow."

My grip froze on the brass handle.

I pushed the door an inch wider.

They were on the king-sized mattress—the very bed delivered three days ago for our wedding night. Marnie’s fingers gripped the headboard, her back arched, her pale skin flushed pink under the chandelier. Kai was over her, gripping her hips, his head buried in the curve of her throat.

"Shut up," Kai grunted, driving into her. "You talk too much."

"I talk because I know you like it," she purred, turning her head toward the cracked door. She didn't flinch. Her gaze locked onto mine through the gap.

She smirked.

Instead of hiding, she dragged her nails down Kai’s shoulder blades.

"Tell me again," Marnie whispered, loud enough to carry into the hall. "Tell me why you're putting a ring on that stiff little Caldwell heiress."

Kai didn't pause. His rhythm stayed brutal.

"Her father controls forty percent of the western shipping corridor," he panted. "The board won't hand me the chairman seat unless I bring the Caldwell assets to the table."

"And once the merger papers clear?"

"Once the ink dries, I strip the subsidiaries," Kai said, his voice flat and practical. "Her father’s voting power transfers to me. I'll combine the shares and force Silas off the executive council by the fourth quarter."

"You're going to gut her family?"

"I'm going to swallow them whole," Kai growled, sinking his teeth into her shoulder. "Then Silas is finished. Lira won't even realize the money is gone until she's signing the bankruptcy filings."

My pulse went numb.

It wasn't just another girl in his bed. It was an execution order for my family.

My knuckles cracked as my hand slipped off the frame. The heavy oak door swung open, banging against the stop.

Kai froze.

He pulled back, his chest heaving, sweat dripping from his forehead onto the silk sheets. Marnie didn't bother to pull up the duvet. She propped herself on an elbow, running her tongue over her bottom lip.

"Lira," Kai said, reaching blindly for his trousers on the carpet. "What the hell are you doing here?"

A normal woman would have screamed. She would have thrown the nearest vase or dissolved into tears.

Instead, a dry laugh tore out of my throat.

It sounded sharp, like snapping glass.

Kai blinked, his brow furrowing as he stepped into his pants. "Don't make a scene. You weren't supposed to be here until morning."

"I came for my grandmother’s necklace," I said. My voice was eerily steady. "I didn't realize the room came with trash."

Marnie tilted her chin up. "Careful, sweetie. You're the one wearing the dress tomorrow, but I'm the one he calls when he needs a real woman."

"Shut your mouth, Marnie," Kai snapped, zipping his slacks. He walked toward me, his hand reaching out to grab my wrist. "Lira, listen to me. Marnie is nothing. It’s an itch before the wedding. You know how this works."

"Do I?" I stepped backward, dodging his fingers. "Does 'how this works' include carving up my father’s shipping lines to settle your grudge with Silas?"

Kai’s face hardened. The panic drained out of his eyes, replaced by cold calculation.

"You heard that."

"Every word."

He sighed, running a hand through his damp hair. "Then you know reality. We need this alliance. Your father’s company is bleeding capital, Lira. Without my backing, you’re drowning anyway. Play your part tomorrow, smile for the cameras, and I’ll keep you comfortable. Act like a child, and I'll ruin you tonight."

"Go to hell," I whispered.

I spun on my heel, grabbed my small overnight duffel from the foyer bench, and bolted toward the stairs.

***

The storm hit like a fist the moment I shoved through the estate’s side exit.

Rain lashed against my face, blinding me in seconds. I dragged the duffel through the gravel path, heading for the front security gates. My car was parked two blocks away outside the private gatehouse. If I could reach it, I could get to my father before the morning market opened.

Lightning cracked across the sky, turning the driveway silver.

Two blinding beams of light cut through the dark.

A black Maybach rolled up the curved drive, braking directly in front of the iron gates. The path was completely blocked.

The driver stepped out with a massive black umbrella, opening the rear door.

A tall man stepped into the downpour.

Silas Vandermeer.

Kai’s uncle. The undisputed head of the Vandermeer conglomerate, and the man Kai wanted to destroy.

Silas wore an immaculate dark suit under a tailored wool coat. He took the umbrella from his driver and walked toward me. His silver-flecked eyes scanned my drenched sweater, my soaked hair, and the battered duffel in my grip.

"Running away in the mud, Miss Caldwell?" Silas asked. His voice was deep, cutting through the drumming rain without effort. "That lacks your usual dignity."

"Move your car, Silas," I rasped, shivering violently. "I don't have time for this."

"You don't have time at all," he said, stepping closer until the black canopy of his umbrella shielded my head from the rain. "If you walk past those gates, what do you think happens?"

"I go to my father."

"And Kai calls a press conference at dawn," Silas countered smoothly. "He tells the media that the Caldwell heiress had a nervous breakdown and abandoned the contract. He triggers the pre-merger default clauses. By noon, his lawyers will freeze your father’s operational accounts."

My breath hitched in my chest. "He wouldn't dare."

"He already drafted the filings three weeks ago," Silas said. "I have copies sitting in my office safe. He wants your family’s ruin, Lira. Running away simply hands him the shovel."

Water dripped from my chin onto my soaked collar. "Then why are you telling me? You two hate each other."

"Precisely," Silas murmured. A cold, dangerous spark lit his gaze. "He wants to use your bloodline to take my chair. I do not surrender what is mine to an insolent boy."

"So what do you want?"

"Get in the car," Silas said. He reached into his inner pocket, pulled out a black leather folder, and held it out against the storm. "We go to the municipal registrar tonight. You sign this."

I stared at the embossed gold crest on the leather. "What is that?"

"A marriage license," Silas replied, his eyes never leaving mine. "Marry me instead. Become my wife in name. Kai’s claims on your father’s assets dissolve the second you take my name, and I will crush his division before the market closes tomorrow."

"And after?" I demanded, teeth chattering. "What do you take from me?"

"Nothing," he said flatly. "When Kai is stripped of his shares and your father’s business is secured, we file for an uncontested divorce. You keep your freedom. I keep my empire."

Behind us, the lights of the penthouse suite blazed against the black sky—a golden cage built on lies.

In front of me stood the most ruthless man in the city, offering me a knife.

The rain poured down like iron sheets, drowning the path behind me.

"Five seconds, Lira," Silas whispered, holding open the car door. "Are you going to let him destroy you, or are you getting in?"
