Chapter 2

The reply was instant. “Alright. Leave the wedding to me.”

It was nearly dawn when Luca Noir came home.

I was dragging the last bag of trash to the door.

His face was alight with post-coital satisfaction. He came over with a grin to help. “I knew you couldn't sleep alone, so I came back to keep you company.”

A strong scent of gardenia filled my nose. I frowned slightly; it was the one scent he loathed.

When his mother died in her lover's bed, she had been wearing gardenia perfume.

He despised it.

Once, I had mistakenly used a bottle of gardenia-scented shampoo, and he had flown into a rage, pouring the entire bottle over my head.

“You like the smell of gardenia so much, huh? Then you can smell it until you're sick of it!”

The look on his face, as if he wanted to devour me whole, was still vivid in my memory.

The irony was that now he was the one marinated in that very scent.

Turns out, his principles were flexible. I just wasn't the one he'd bend them for.

Seeing I was silent, he smiled and wrapped his arms around me.

“Honey, sending dresses and preparing pasta... you've become so understanding lately. I'm very pleased.”

He then pinched my cheek, his teasing tone laced with a hint of probing.

“Found a man you want to date yet? If not, I can introduce you to some. I guarantee they're all top-tier.”

I looked at him, at the way he puffed out his chest and made his grand promises, and found it utterly laughable.

I tugged lightly at the corner of my mouth. “I have. But at my age, I'm not interested in just dating. I plan to get married.”

He didn't get to see me burst into tears and swear my undying loyalty.

For a few seconds, Luca Noir was stunned. A flicker of unease crossed his eyes, but he quickly dismissed it, mistaking my expression for a joke.

“You little rascal. Look what I brought you.”

A family crest with a star-shaped pendant slid from his palm. “I drew the design for this crest myself and had it custom-made for you. It's the only one in the world.”

He put it around my neck as if seeking praise, then held me and sighed with satisfaction. “Honey, you will always be the one I love most. Just give me another six months. Once I'm tired of Sophia, I'll belong only to you. Wait for me.”

I had heard those words too many times.

And I had waited for far too long.

Luca Noir, this time, I'm the one who doesn't want you.

Less than half an hour later, he made an excuse and left in a hurry.

I let out a self-deprecating laugh. He really did love Sophia Lune.

He would rather drive thirty minutes back just to placate me than risk me doing anything to hurt her.

The last person he had cherished this much was me.

Love doesn't die. It just gets transferred.

I took the crest from my neck and threw it into the trash bag along with the five other identical crests from my drawer.

Then, I mailed the annulment agreement, which I had mixed in with a pile of signed delivery slips, to the family's Consigliere.
