Chapter 5

I rushed across the ballroom floor, gathering the heavy emerald silk of my dress to keep from tripping.

By the time I reached the quiet alcove near the tall arched windows, Sophie had already led the most feared billionaire in the country toward a velvet bench.

Adrian Blackwood was crouched on one knee on the polished marble floor. His broad shoulders were squared, his bespoke dark jacket straining slightly as he leaned forward. He looked utterly out of place beside a five-year-old girl holding a stubby purple crayon, yet he showed no sign of impatience.

"Sophie," I called out, my heart pounding against my ribs as I reached them. "Come here, baby. You can't bother Mr. Blackwood."

I stepped between them, ready to offer a swift apology, but Sophie held up one tiny hand to pause me.

"Not yet, Mommy," Sophie said firmly. "I'm on question three."

Before I could reach down to pull her away, she turned her serious gaze back to Adrian. She held the crumpled piece of paper flat against her small knees.

"Do you tell lies?" Sophie asked.

Adrian looked up at the paper, then directly into her wide brown eyes. A faint trace of amusement played at the edge of his mouth, but his voice was completely smooth.

"Never," Adrian replied. "In my line of work, a lie ruins everything. My word is worth more than my money."

Sophie tilted her head, evaluating his answer. "Do you forget birthdays?"

"I don't," he said. "I have a private scheduling system, and my memory is exceptional. I haven't missed a date in fifteen years."

"Good." Sophie nodded, her little brow furrowing as she prepared the next strike. "Do you sneak off and kiss other people's wives?"

The question hung in the air like a sudden drop in temperature.

Nearby, two of Adrian’s private security guards subtly turned their heads away, their shoulders rigid as they tried to maintain composure.

Adrian didn't flinch. The amusement in his expression faded, replaced by a quiet, focused stillness. He seemed to recognize instantly that the question hadn't come from a cartoon or a storybook. It came from a fresh wound.

"No," Adrian said, his low baritone dropping an octave. "I don't take what isn't mine. And I don't touch people who belong to someone else."

Sophie stared at him for a long moment, watching his face for any flicker of deceit. When she found none, she drew a deep breath.

"And if Mommy cries," she whispered, her voice tightening with the kind of raw protection only a child who had witnessed too much could carry, "will you pretend you didn't see?"

My chest constricted violently at her words.

Over the last six years, whenever Ethan had made me cry, he had simply walked past me, annoyed by the tears, calling me dramatic before slamming the front door. Sophie had seen every single instance through the crack of her bedroom door.

Adrian’s gaze softened. He reached out, his large hand hovering for a second before he gently rested his knuckles against the sleeve of Sophie's coat.

"I don't look away from things that matter," Adrian answered.

He didn't give a glib, polished answer. He looked Sophie straight in the eye, treating her like an equal rather than a child to be pacified.

"To be honest with you, Sophie," Adrian continued quietly, "I've never been a father. I spend most of my time in boardrooms, on planes, and dealing with difficult problems. I don't know if I'd be good at making pancakes or building block towers."

Sophie watched him without blinking, hanging on every syllable.

"But I can tell you this," Adrian said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "If I make a promise to you, I will show up. I don't make excuses, and I never say 'later' when I mean 'never.'"

A small, quiet breath slipped past Sophie's lips. The tension in her small frame melted away.

She lifted her crayon and drew a firm, dark checkmark inside the third square box on the paper.

Seeing the situation get completely out of hand, I immediately stepped forward and placed both hands firmly on Sophie's shoulders.

"That's enough, Sophie," I said gently but with enough authority to leave no room for argument.

I looked down at Adrian, who was still kneeling on the marble floor. Up close, the sharp angles of his jaw and the piercing intensity of his slate-gray eyes were overwhelming. He was a man who commanded empires, yet he had spent five minutes answering the absurd interrogation of a kindergartener.

"I apologize for my daughter's behavior, Mr. Blackwood," I said, keeping my tone polite and distant. "She went through a stressful couple of days, and she has an active imagination. Thank you for your patience, but we won't take up any more of your evening."

Adrian rose to his feet.

He moved with effortless grace, his tall frame instantly towering over me. The sheer presence he carried forced me to lift my chin just to keep meeting his gaze.

He didn't look annoyed. In fact, a faint, intriguing glint sparked in the depth of his eyes as he looked down at me.

"You don't need to apologize for her, Ms. Whitmore," Adrian said smoothly, clasping his hands behind his back. "Her standards are remarkably high. Considerably higher than most board members I deal with."

"She's five," I replied, taking a half-step back to create space. "She doesn't know what she's doing."

"On the contrary," Adrian murmured, his eyes sweeping over my face with quiet scrutiny. "She seems to know exactly what she wants for you. Tell me, do all of your suitors have to go through this level of vetting before they get a meeting with you?"

My eyebrows pulled together. "Who said you were a suitor?"

Adrian glanced down at the paper Sophie was clutching against her chest.

"According to this document," Adrian said, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, "I'm candidate number one."

"It's a piece of paper drawn in purple wax," I countered, feeling a sudden heat rise to my collar. "It isn't a binding contract."

"Everything is negotiable until signed," Adrian replied, his voice low and rich.

Sophie, completely ignoring our back-and-forth, looked down at her checklist with glowing satisfaction. Three of the boxes had bold, dark purple checks inside them.

*1. Richer than Daddy* [✓]

*2. More handsome than Daddy* [✓]

*3. Doesn't tell lies* [✓]

*4. Must love Mommy* [ ]

Sophie smiled proudly. She positioned the tip of her purple crayon right inside the fourth square, ready to complete the list.

Before the wax could touch the paper, Adrian reached down.

His long, warm fingers gently covered the top of the crayon, stopping her hand in midair.

Sophie blinked up at him in surprise. "Mister?"

"Not that one," Adrian said softly.

He didn't let go of the crayon, but he turned his head slowly, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the surrounding room fade into complete silence.

"I'm not qualified to answer this one," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a steady, resonant hum that vibrated straight through me. "I don't know your mother well enough."

He paused, holding my gaze without an ounce of hesitation.

"Yet."
