Chapter 2

Ethan remained on one knee, his hand still extended in midair, trembling. The lobby of the St. Regis buzzed with muffled chatter in the distance, but the space around us felt entirely hollow.

"Sophie, sweetheart, Daddy didn't lie," Ethan said, his voice rising in an urgent pitch as he tried to catch her eye. "It was just a misunderstanding. Vanessa is an important client, okay? We were celebrating an account milestone. A partnership anniversary. That's all that cake was for."

He stood up quickly, smoothing his suit jacket with jerky movements before turning his gaze to me. The panic in his eyes hardened into irritation.

"Claire, why did you bring her here?" he snapped under his breath. "You shouldn't drag our five-year-old child into an adult misunderstanding. You're confusing her for no reason."

I stared at him, cold fury anchoring me to the marble floor. "An adult misunderstanding?"

Before I could say another word, Sophie tugged at my sleeve. She peeked out from behind my leg, her small brow furrowed in genuine innocence.

"Daddy," she said clearly, her voice carrying across the polished corridor. "You kissed her on the mouth. Do you have to kiss company people like that too?"

Ethan flinched as if she had slapped him across the face. The blood rushed back into his cheeks, dark and mottled. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

The glass door of the private lounge clicked open.

Vanessa stepped into the hallway, her expression composed and radiant. She held Ethan's charcoal wool overcoat over one arm, stepping close enough to him that her shoulder brushed his sleeve.

"You left your coat on the back of the booth, Ethan," she said, her voice smooth and deliberate.

She turned her gaze toward me with a polite, measured smile that didn't reach her eyes, then looked down at Sophie.

"Hi there, little one," Vanessa said, crouching slightly to meet Sophie's eye level. "You must be Sophie. Don't be upset with your daddy. He works so hard for all of us, and he was just finishing up a very long day."

Sophie didn't smile back. She pressed her face tight against my thigh, refusing to look at her.

My eyes dropped to Vanessa's outstretched wrist.

Under the bright recessed ceiling lights, the white-gold diamond tennis bracelet glittered brilliantly. The custom clasp caught the light with unmistakable clarity.

Last month, when our anniversary was approaching, I had mentioned going on a quiet weekend trip. Ethan had sighed, rubbing his temples, and told me that his company's cash flow was tight, that bonuses were frozen, and that we needed to be financially responsible instead of wasting money on jewelry or trips.

He had refused to spend a dime on our six-year milestone. Yet here it was, thousands of dollars wrapped around another woman's wrist.

"Stay away from my daughter, Vanessa," I said, my voice dead and level.

Vanessa straightened up slowly, glancing at Ethan with a helpless, injured look. "I was only trying to help, Ethan."

"We're leaving," I said, lifting Sophie into my arms without giving Ethan another second to speak.

"Claire, wait!" Ethan called after me, but I didn't slow my stride.

The drive home was quiet. Sophie sat in her booster seat in the back, clutching her stuffed rabbit, her eyes fixed on the city lights passing outside the window. I kept both hands gripped on the steering wheel, my knuckles white, breathing through the numbness spreading in my chest.

When we pulled into the driveway, Ethan's car was already screeching to a halt behind us. He had sped all the way from the hotel.

I walked inside, carried Sophie upstairs, and tucked her into bed. She didn't ask for a bedtime story. She didn't ask about the drawing she had left on the dining table downstairs. She just pulled the floral quilt up to her chin and closed her eyes.

I stepped down into the living room, where Ethan was pacing across the hardwood floor. He had ripped his tie off and thrown it onto the sofa.

"Are you done being dramatic?" he demanded the moment he saw me on the stairs. "You made a complete scene in a public hotel. Do you know how humiliating that was?"

"I made a scene?" I asked, stopping at the base of the staircase. "You took your mistress to a luxury restaurant on our wedding anniversary, fed her cake, and kissed her, and you think I caused a scene?"

"Vanessa is a colleague!" Ethan yelled, throwing his hands in the air. "So what if we had a few drinks and crossed a line? It meant nothing! You're blowing a tiny mistake completely out of proportion."

He took three long strides toward me, towering over me with a sneer.

"Think about what you're doing, Claire. Sophie needs a complete family. You haven't worked an actual job since she was born. You have no independent income, no career, and zero savings of your own. How do you plan to survive without me? You can't afford rent in this city, let alone a lawyer."

His words were calculated to tear down whatever strength I had left. For years, I had stayed home to raise our daughter, manage our household, and support his long hours while he built his career. Now he was using my sacrifices as a weapon to keep me trapped.

I stood there in total silence, the weight of six years crashing down on my shoulders.

A soft rustle sounded from the bottom step.

Sophie stood there in her flannel pajamas, holding her rabbit by its ear. She walked past Ethan without looking at him, climbed onto the sofa where I stood, and pulled herself up into my lap.

She wrapped her small arms around my neck and rested her cheek against mine.

"Mommy," she whispered into my ear, her small voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room. "If he's lying, we don't have to believe him."

Her words hit me with the force of an electric shock.

The fog in my head cleared instantly. All the self-doubt, fear, and sorrow that had weighed down my limbs vanished, replaced by an absolute, crystal-clear certainty.

I kissed Sophie's temple and gently set her down on the sofa cushions.

"Stay here for a second, sweetie," I said softly.

I walked over to the coffee table where Ethan stood watching me with crossed arms, convinced he had intimidated me into submission.

I raised my left hand.

I slid the gold wedding band off my ring finger. The metal felt cold against my skin as it slipped past the knuckle.

With a single, steady motion, I dropped the ring onto the glass table. It landed with a sharp, resonant clatter right in front of him.

Ethan stared at the band, his jaw tightening. "What is this supposed to mean?"

"My lawyer will contact you tomorrow morning," I said, my voice completely steady. "Be ready."

Ethan let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "A lawyer? With what money, Claire? You won't last a single week out there on your own. You'll come crawling back before the weekend is over."

I looked directly into his eyes, feeling nothing for the man who had stood at the altar six years ago.

"You shouldn't worry about whether I can survive a week, Ethan," I said quietly. "What you should really be worried about is that this time, I am never coming back."
