Chapter 2

The double doors of the ballroom swung open with a heavy thud, echoing across the marble floor.

Grant strode in, his charcoal suit jacket unbuttoned, his silk tie loosened just enough to signal controlled fury. He didn’t look at the crystal chandeliers or the floral arrangements. His gaze locked directly onto me.

"Caroline," he said, his voice dropping into the low, commanding tone he used in boardrooms. "Call the front desk right now and clear the hold on the suite."

Sophie rushed toward him like a protected child. "Dad! She told Marcus to freeze all secondary billing. Vanessa’s glam team is waiting in the lobby with six rolling racks of clothes!"

Grant held up a manicured hand, silencing Sophie without taking his eyes off me.

"You’ve made your point," he said, stepping into my personal space. "You’re angry. But we are twelve days away from the biggest social event of this family’s calendar. You do not pull petty stunts like this in front of hotel staff."

"It’s not a stunt, Grant," I said quietly. "It’s basic accounting. If Vanessa wants the Presidential Suite, she can put down her own card."

Grant’s jaw tightened. "Vanessa is hosting three senior partners from the private equity group tonight. They flew in from Boston for the weekend. We need that suite to entertain them."

"Then entertain them on your dime."

"My liquid accounts are tied up in the escrow rollover until Friday," he snapped, leaning in closer. "You know how corporate cash flow works. Put the card back on file. We will sit down and discuss our personal issues the Monday after the reception is over."

"Personal issues?" I looked down at the Table One seating chart still resting on the table. "You put your mistress in the mother of the bride’s chair and stuck me next to the kitchen garbage disposal."

"Vanessa is an executive at my firm, and she has spent the last six months building relationships with the donors and board members attending this wedding," Grant said smoothly. "She is already part of Sophie’s future life. It makes strategic sense."

*Part of Sophie’s future life.*

He said it without a flinch, as if he were explaining a routine corporate merger.

"I managed high-end event operations for the Drake and the Ritz for seven years before Sophie turned ten, Grant," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "Do not lecture me on strategic seating. You didn’t seat Vanessa there for business. You did it to erase me."

Grant let out a scoffing laugh, running a hand through his silvering hair. "Here we go. The martyr routine again. You worked in catering twelve years ago, Caroline. You gave that up to be a full-time mother because my career took off. I built an empire that bought you this lifestyle, and now you want to blow it all up over a chair?"

He truly believed his own lie.

He had forgotten the endless nights I spent drafting his client proposals while he slept. He had forgotten that twelve years ago, when his firm was bleeding cash and on the verge of bankruptcy, I walked away from a senior directorship at the luxury hotel group to keep our household running and protect his public image. He had taken my sacrifice, filed it under weakness, and convinced himself he had built everything alone.

"Dad," Sophie interrupted, tugging at his sleeve with growing anxiety. "Vanessa is texting again. The front desk clerk told her that if the incidentals aren't covered by four o'clock, they’re releasing the room to another guest. Liam’s parents are on their way from O’Hare right now! What about our welcome drinks? What about the starter townhouse?"

I turned my head toward Sophie. "What did you just say?"

Sophie swallowed, glancing nervously at Grant before finding her footing. "Dad promised Liam and me the starter townhouse in Lincoln Park as our wedding gift. On Cleveland Avenue. The three-story brownstone."

A hollow, incredulous laugh nearly slipped past my lips.

"The Cleveland Avenue brownstone?" I asked Grant.

Grant’s eyes flickered, the first crack appearing in his polished armor. "It's an idle asset, Caroline. The lease on the current tenants ends next month. Sophie and Liam need a stable foundation to start their marriage."

"That property was purchased with the proceeds from my grandmother’s estate," I said, every word hitting the air like a hammer. "The title is held entirely under the Sterling Heritage Trust, with me as the sole surviving trustee. You have zero legal authority to deed that house to anyone, Grant. Not today, not after the wedding, not ever."

Sophie’s mouth fell open. She whipped around to face her father. "Dad? You told me you held the deed!"

"It’s a family asset!" Grant raised his voice, his composure fracturing into raw irritation. "We were going to restructure the trust after the quarter closed! Caroline, stop playing games with our daughter’s future!"

"I’m not playing games," I said. "You wrote a check with my money to buy our daughter’s compliance in betraying me. And you didn't even have the collateral to back it up."

Grant’s face darkened, turning an ugly, mottled red.

"Look at you," he hissed, stepping so close I could smell his expensive aftershave. "Bitter. Spiteful. You’ve been sitting on your high horse for twenty years while I carried the weight of this family! You’re punishing Sophie because I fell in love with someone who actually supports my vision!"

The words hung in the grand ballroom, thick and putrid.

*You’re punishing Sophie because I fell in love.*

He wanted to reduce his calculated infidelity to romance, and my self-respect to petty jealousy.

I looked at him. Then I looked at Sophie, who was staring at the floor, not in shame for what her father had done, but in panicked calculation over her lost real estate.

"Marcus," I called out.

The event coordinator, who had been lingering near the hallway arches trying desperately to disappear, jumped at the sound of his name. He walked over quickly, clutching his iPad.

"Yes, Mrs. Sterling?"

"Bring up the supplemental authorizations for the weekend," I said, my voice steady. "Specifically, the welcome dinner open-bar upgrade and the bridal suite honeymoon package."

"Caroline, don't you dare," Grant warned, taking a threatening step forward.

"The premium open bar for tomorrow night’s dinner," Marcus read from the screen, his fingers shaking slightly. "Twelve thousand dollars. And the five-night bridal suite extension with private butler service for Mr. and Mrs. Miller, totaling fifteen thousand five hundred."

"Cancel both authorizations immediately," I said. "Drop the welcome dinner back to the standard house wine package, and cancel the post-wedding suite extension. If the bride and groom want luxury upgrades, they can provide a new card."

Marcus tapped the screen. "Done, Mrs. Sterling."

Grant’s phone vibrated violently against his hip. He snatched it out of his pocket.

His eyes scanned the screen. The notification from his banking app flashed across the glass in bright red: *Transaction Declined. Merchant: Reed Grand Hotel. Amount: $27,500.00.*

"You goddamn bitch," Grant breathed, his hands clenching into white-knuckled fists. "You're humiliating us in front of the entire city."

"No," I replied, holding his gaze without blinking. "I’m letting you live within your means."

Sophie let out a choked sob. She stepped past Grant, her eyes red, burning with venomous fury.

She didn't look like the little girl I had tucked into bed, or the daughter who had clung to my hand when she was nervous. She looked like a stranger—selfish, ruthless, and entirely her father's creation.

"Are you happy now?" Sophie spat, her voice shaking with hatred. "You're ruining my life! You’re ruining my wedding just to get back at Dad!"

"Sophie, I gave you everything—"

"Shut up!" she screamed, cutting me off. "You didn't give me anything! You're just a bitter, jealous woman who can't stand seeing someone else be happy!"

She took Grant's arm, pressing herself against his side to show where her loyalty lay.

"If you don't fix this," Sophie whispered, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal promise, "if you ruin my walk down that aisle, do not bother showing up. And even if you do sit at Table Fourteen, Mom... don't ever expect me to call you that again."
