Chapter 2

The room holds its breath.

I can feel it—three hundred and forty-seven people watching through Maya's lens, the air in the dining room gone thick as honey, Adrian's face cycling through emotions like a slot machine. Shock. Confusion. The dawning, horrible understanding that something has gone catastrophically wrong.

His hand is still pressed to his chest. To the lapel. To the velvet box.

I cross the floor in six steps. My heels sound like a countdown.

"Baby," Adrian starts, and his voice has that rasp it gets when he's scrambling—I know that rasp, I've heard it when he's trying to explain late nights at the office, missed dinner reservations, the smell of perfume that definitely wasn't mine. "This isn't—I can explain—"

"Shh." I reach up.

My fingers find his collar. The navy button-down I picked out last month. The fabric is soft from washing, slightly warm from his skin, and my knuckles brush his throat as I straighten the left side of his collar. Then the right.

A tuck. A smoothing motion. The kind of intimate, automatic gesture that comes from two years of mornings together, two years of adjusting his tie before work events, two years of him standing still while I fussed.

His mother makes a sound behind me. Something between a gasp and a sob.

"You're always so rumpled when you're nervous," I murmur, and my voice carries—Maya positioned the microphone perfectly. Every word lands. "Let me fix you up."

My right hand slides down from his collar. Over his chest. Over his heartbeat, which I can feel pounding against my palm like a trapped bird.

Adrian's eyes lock onto mine.

And in that split second, I see him calculate. The livestream. His parents. His brother. The ring box Maya slipped into his jacket forty minutes ago, the ring box he doesn't know is there, the ring box he definitely doesn't want me to find in front of everyone.

His hand comes up to catch my wrist.

He's too slow.

My fingers slip inside his jacket.

The velvet is unmistakable. That soft, expensive give. The little box that cost me three months of freelance gigs, the box I picked out with my mother in a jewelry store downtown, the box I was supposed to be holding right now while I got down on one knee.

I pull it out.

The room goes absolutely silent. Not the silence of people being quiet—the silence of people forgetting how to breathe.

Adrian stares at the box like it's a grenade.

"What—" His mouth works. "That's not mine. I don't know where that came from. Maya, did you—"

Maya doesn't answer. Maya is frozen behind her tripod, phone clutched in both hands, eyes wide and wet and horrified. The livestream comments are scrolling so fast they're a blur of white text. I can see them reflected in the window behind Adrian's head.

Is that a ring box

OH MY GOD wait who is she proposing to

I THOUGHT HE JUST ANNOUNCED HIS ENGAGEMENT someone explain pls

I hold the box up. Turn it so the camera catches it perfectly.

"I was going to propose tonight," I say.

Adrian's face goes gray.

"That's why Maya set up the livestream. That's why she planted this in your jacket." I tap the velvet with one fingernail—a small, sharp sound. "I was supposed to walk in, find this while I was 'helping you with your tie,' and get down on one knee in front of everyone we love. In front of three hundred and forty-seven people who've watched us build a life together for two years."

The comments are screaming now. I don't need to read them. I can feel them vibrating through the screen, through the room, through the horrified silence of his parents and his brother and his aunt who just shrieked with delight thirty seconds ago.

Adrian swallows. His Adam's apple bobs. "Baby, listen—"

"Two years." I don't raise my voice. I don't need to. The silence is so complete that a whisper would carry. "You were with Celeste for two years. You were with me for two years. And neither of us knew about the other." A pause. "Did we, Celeste?"

I turn to the camera. To Maya's phone.

The livestream comments have stopped scrolling. Everyone is waiting.

And then, near the top of the feed, a single comment appears:

Adrian??? You said tonight was a family dinner.

The username is CelesteM_Official.

Adrian sees it. His face crumples.

"She didn't know either," I say, and something in my chest twists—not satisfaction, not exactly, but a kind of terrible clarity. "She didn't know you were going to announce the engagement tonight. You told both of us different stories. You told her tonight was a family dinner. You told me tonight was a casual gathering. And you were planning to..." I stop. Frown. "What were you planning, exactly? Propose to her and just hope I never found out?"

He doesn't answer.

His mother does.

"Adrian Hale." Her voice is shaking. She's standing now, napkin clutched in her fist, face pale beneath her makeup. "Tell me this isn't true. Tell me you did not—with two women—for two years—"

"Mom—"

"You let me teach her my mother's pierogi recipe." Mrs. Hale's voice cracks. "You let your father help her pick out anniversary flowers. She's been at our table. In our home. And you were—"

She can't finish.

Adrian's father puts a hand on her shoulder. He doesn't say anything. He doesn't look at his son.

The velvet box is warm in my palm. I've held it so many times in the past three months—opening it in my bedroom, practicing the speech, imagining his face—that the weight of it feels like muscle memory. I open it now.

The ring catches the light from the chandelier. Rose gold. A single diamond, not too big, not too small. Something classic. Something permanent.

Something he'll never wear.

I close the box. Turn to Mrs. Hale.

"This was supposed to make you my mother-in-law," I say. My voice wobbles for the first time. I let it. "I practiced calling you Mom in the mirror. Pathetic, right?"

She shakes her head. Her eyes are rimmed with red.

I cross to her. Take her hand—the one not clutching the napkin—and press the velvet box into her palm. Her fingers are cold. Trembling.

"Consider it rent," I say. "For two years of free accommodation. Two years of Sunday dinners and Christmas mornings and the way you always made me feel like I belonged here."

She looks down at the box. Up at me.

"I'm sorry," she whispers.

"Me too."

The comments are a flood now. I catch fragments—this is insane and dump him girl and his MOM is crying and Celeste just left the stream omg.

I turn around.

Maya is crying.

Not the pretty kind of crying, either. Her mascara is streaking down her cheeks in dark rivulets, and her shoulders are shaking, and the phone in her hands is trembling so hard the livestream must look like an earthquake. She's still holding it up, though. Still streaming.

Still doing her job.

"Maya." I walk to her. The room parts around me—Adrian's aunt stepping back, his brother moving aside, everyone giving me space like I'm something dangerous. "Hey. Look at me."

She shakes her head. "I'm so sorry. I thought—I was trying to help, I thought he'd be happy, I thought—"

"I know."

"He's my brother." The word comes out broken. "He's my brother and I set him up. I set you up. I set this up —" She gestures at the camera, at the room, at the wreckage of the evening. "I just wanted you to have your moment. You deserved your moment."

I take the phone from her hands. Gently. Her grip loosens, and she lets me pry her fingers off the case, and then she's just standing there with her arms wrapped around herself and her mascara dripping onto her blouse.

I face the camera.

Three hundred and fifty-two viewers now. The number is still climbing.

"I'm going to end the stream now," I say. "Thank you for coming. I know this wasn't what anyone expected. It definitely wasn't what I expected." A pause. A breath. "I'll be okay. Eventually."

I reach for the button to end the stream.

Adrian's voice cuts through the room.

"Wait."

I freeze.

He's moved closer. Not close enough to touch me—he's not that stupid—but close enough that I can see the sweat beading at his temples, the way his hands are shaking, the desperate calculation still churning behind his eyes. He's trying to find a way out of this. He's trying to spin it.

"Please," he says. "Just—let me explain. Privately. Five minutes. That's all I'm asking."

The room watches. His mother watches. Maya watches.

The livestream watches.

I look at him—this man I loved for two years. This man who taught me how to make coffee the way he likes it. This man who held my hand at my father's funeral. This man who looked me in the eyes this morning and kissed my forehead and said see you tonight, can't wait for dinner.

His hand is still at his side. Still close to his jacket pocket. The pocket where the ring box used to be.

And I remember something.

Something Maya said, months ago, when we first started planning this. The proposal has to be public, she'd insisted. Adrian hates being put on the spot. If you do it privately, he'll find a way to squirm out of it. He'll say he needs time to think, or he's not ready, or there's something he needs to tell you first. Public is the only way you'll get a real answer.

She was right.

She just didn't know what the real answer would be.

I lower the phone. Look directly at Adrian.

"Five minutes," I say.

His shoulders sag with relief.

"But not privately." I lift the phone again. "Three hundred and fifty-two people have seen everything so far. They might as well see the finale."
