Chapter 1

I was freezing in the wreckage of my private plane when I realized no one was coming. I survived on melted snow for six days, waiting for the husband who promised to always protect me. When a rogue pilot finally found me, I didn't cry from relief. I froze. Because on the clinic’s small TV, I watched my own funeral broadcast live to the world. Daniel stood beside my portrait, weeping flawlessly about my tragic death. Then he called my assistant to the stage, kissed her, and proposed with my wedding ring, announcing her as the new CEO of my company. I stared at the screen as my entire life was handed over to another woman. I pulled the IV from my bruised arm, looked at the pilot who saved me, and gave my first order as a ghost. "Take me to that church."

The plastic casing of the emergency beacon was cracked, but the tiny red LED still pulsed against my palm.

Six days.

Six days trapped in the wreckage on the frozen ridge, clutching that little box like it was a lifeline to the living world. Every time the light blinked, I had pictured Daniel. I pictured him pacing the hangar, screaming at dispatchers, throwing his fortune at every private search team in the state to bring me home.

The door to the clinic room rattled open.

My breath caught. I struggled to push myself up on the thin mattress, my dry lips parting. "Daniel?"

It wasn't Daniel.

A tall man stepped through the doorway, filling the narrow frame. He wore a faded olive flight jacket with scuffed patches and grease staining the cuffs. Dark stubble shadowed a jaw set tight with exhaustion, and his eyes—sharp, assessing, and shadowed with dark circles—locked onto mine.

I recognized the flight insignia on his chest. Noah Cole.

"You're awake," he said, his voice low and gravelly.

"Where is my husband?" I gripped the beacon tighter, the hard plastic cutting into my bruised fingers. "Did his helicopter land? Is he outside?"

Noah didn't answer right away. He reached back, pulling the door shut behind him, cutting off the low murmur of the clinic's reception desk.

"There's no helicopter outside, Ava," he said.

"What do you mean?" A sharp spike of panic hit my chest. "He owns half the private hangars in this county. Did the fog roll back in? Did air traffic control ground him?"

"No one is grounded by the weather." Noah walked toward the foot of my bed, pulling a pair of heavy work gloves from his pocket and dropping them onto the metal side table. "The official search was called off forty-eight hours ago."

The words didn't make sense. I stared at him, my head pounding. "Called off? I had the beacon on. It’s been transmitting the entire time."

"Dispatch logged the signal as lost after day four," Noah said bluntly. "Incident command declared the crash unsurvivable. The sheriff signed the declaration, the contractors packed up, and the county closed the file."

"No." I shook my head, my voice rising. "Daniel wouldn't let them do that. He wouldn't just pack up. You don't know him. He promised me—"

"I know the radio logs," Noah cut in. His tone wasn't cruel, but it had the flat, unyielding weight of cold steel. "And I know I was ordered to keep my bird in the hangar."

I blinked at him, trying to piece his words together through the haze of exhaustion. "Then how are you here?"

"I turned off my transponder, diverted thirty miles north of the assigned grid, and followed an analog ping that command told me was ghost interference." Noah leaned slightly against the bed frame, his jaw tight. "They grounded me the second I touched down at the landing strip down the road. My flight status is suspended indefinitely."

"Suspended?"

"I don't have a job anymore, Ava," he said quietly. "Because according to protocol, I went hunting for a corpse."

"I'm not a corpse!"

"Tell that to the county."

"It's a mistake," I insisted, my voice cracking as I fought to steady my breathing. "Daniel is probably tearing through the state capital right now trying to get federal clearance. He wouldn't stop. He loves me."

Noah didn't argue. He just looked at me with a steady, unreadable gaze that made my skin prickle with dread.

Above the counter in the corner, a dusty, boxy television sat mounted on an iron bracket. The screen flickered with static, the volume dialed down to a faint, rhythmic murmur.

Noah reached up and tapped the power button, turning the knob on the front panel.

The static cleared.

The banner running across the bottom of the screen was stark black and white: *LIVE: MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR AVA VANCE.*

My throat closed.

The broadcast showed the steps of St. Jude's Cathedral in the city. Hundreds of people filled the pews, dressed in black wool and tailored coats. Cameras panned past board members from Vance Tech, family friends, and local politicians.

Then the camera cut to the altar.

In the center sat a massive framed portrait of me. It was the photo Daniel had taken on our fifth anniversary in Aspen—windblown hair, laughing, looking directly into the lens. Directly at him.

Standing beside the portrait was Daniel.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit. His face was pale, his eyes rimmed with red, and a pristine white handkerchief trembled in his hand.

Noah turned up the volume.

"—she was the light of my life," Daniel’s voice filled the small clinic room, cracking at just the right cadence. He paused, pressing the handkerchief to the corner of his eye, giving the press gallery time to capture the break in his composure. "Ava gave everything to this marriage. She gave everything to our shared vision. In every quiet moment, her devotion was absolute."

A woman in the front row dabbed at her cheeks. Daniel bowed his head, his shoulders shaking with silent, measured grief.

"I prayed for a miracle," Daniel choked out, his voice echoing through the vaulted church. "I begged the rescue teams to keep looking until the very last second. But nature is merciless. Now, all I have left is her memory... and the duty to honor the sacrifices she made for our future."

I couldn't breathe.

I looked down at the emergency beacon in my lap.

The light was still pulsing.

*Forty-eight hours ago.*

Forty-eight hours ago, while I was shivering under the fiberglass debris of the fuselage, melting snow with my bare hands to keep from dying of thirst, Daniel wasn't screaming at search teams.

He was reserving the cathedral.

He was approving the floral arrangements.

He was standing in front of a mirror, rehearsing how to cry on cue for the cameras.

The search hadn't failed.

It had been stopped.

"Ava?" Noah's voice cut through the roaring in my ears.

The clinic door swung open again, and an elderly doctor in a rumpled white coat hurried in with a chart. "What's going on in here? Her heart monitor is spiking—"

"Get out," I whispered.

"Excuse me?" The doctor took a step toward the bed, reaching for the IV drip connected to the back of my hand. "Ma'am, you are suffering from severe exposure and extreme dehydration. You need to lie back down immediately—"

I grabbed the plastic catheter lodged in my skin.

With one sharp yank, I tore the needle out.

Blood welled in a dark bead against my pale flesh, dripping onto the clean white sheet. The doctor gasped, lunging forward with a roll of gauze. "Are you out of your mind? You can't leave this bed!"

"Don't touch me," I said, my voice dropping to a flat, dangerous calm.

I swung my legs over the edge of the mattress. The linoleum was freezing beneath my bare feet. A violent wave of dizziness hit me, tilting the room on its axis, but I gripped the metal edge of the frame until my knuckles turned white, forcing my knees to lock.

The doctor looked at Noah, flustered and indignant. "Pilot, do something! She isn't medically cleared to stand, let alone walk!"

Noah didn't move to stop me. He stood with his arms crossed, watching the blood drip from my hand to the floor. His gaze moved from the television screen, where Daniel was now accepting condolences from city officials, back to my eyes.

He saw it. He knew exactly what had just shattered inside that room.

I ignored the doctor completely. I stepped forward, my hospital gown rustling, my hospital socks sliding slightly on the polished floor until I stood inches from Noah.

"You still have that bird on the strip?" I asked.

Noah’s eyes narrowed slightly. "I told you. I'm suspended. If I fire up those rotors, the FAA will revoke my license before I clear the county line."

I locked my eyes on his, letting every ounce of the cold, lethal rage burning in my veins show.

"I don't care about your license," I said. "I need you to fly me back right now."
