Chapter 2

I jolted awake at 3 a.m., my phone's screen illuminating the darkness with a harsh blue glow. The text I'd sent Victoria hours ago remained unanswered, the single checkmark mocking me. Sleep had come fitfully after Alexander locked me in the wine cellar, his desperate questions about Victoria ringing in my ears even after he'd finally released me with a muttered apology about stress and paranoia.

The apartment was silent except for the distant hum of the city that never sleeps and the sudden, startling buzz of the intercom. My heart leaped to my throat. Who would be calling at this hour? I waited, listening for Alexander's footsteps, but they never came. The intercom buzzed again, then fell silent.

I slipped from our bed, my bare feet silent against the plush carpet. Alexander's side was empty, the sheets cold. Where was he? The hallway stretched before me, a river of shadows leading to his study—the one room in our home he always kept locked.

Except tonight, the door was slightly ajar, a sliver of light spilling onto the hardwood floor. I held my breath, listening. Nothing. I pushed the door open with trembling fingers.

The study was empty, his laptop open on the mahogany desk. My heart hammered against my ribs as I slid into his leather chair. This was wrong—invading his privacy, breaking the trust between us. But hadn't he already shattered that trust in the wine cellar?

His screensaver—a photo from our wedding day—faded away as I touched the trackpad. I knew his password. Of course I did. Eight years together, and he'd never bothered to hide it from me. Why would he? I was his devoted wife, the grateful orphan he'd rescued.

My fingers typed: 0-4-2-7-1-5. Our anniversary and the day we met.

The desktop appeared, organized with the precision that defined Alexander in all things. My gaze caught on a folder labeled simply "V.S."

Victoria Sterling.

I clicked, and my world collapsed.

Call logs. Hundreds of them, spanning back over a year. Late-night calls, early-morning calls. Calls that lasted hours while Alexander told me he was working late. Text message transcripts filled with intimacies that made my stomach turn.

"I miss you already," he'd written to her the night before our anniversary dinner.

"Just a few more months," she'd replied.

I covered my mouth with my hand, stifling a sob that threatened to tear me apart. How had I been so blind? So trusting?

A noise in the hallway sent panic shooting through me. I quickly closed the folder but couldn't bring myself to exit the laptop entirely. Instead, I opened his desk drawer, searching for—I didn't know what. Evidence? Confirmation? A reason?

Beneath a stack of financial reports lay a leather portfolio. I pulled it out, hands shaking so badly I nearly dropped it. Inside was a document, the Blackwood Enterprises letterhead gleaming at the top. My eyes skimmed the title: "Contingency Agreement between Alexander Blackwood and Victoria Sterling."

It was a contract. A detailed, legally binding contract outlining their relationship—professional and personal. It specified Victoria's future role as CFO of Blackwood Enterprises and, more devastatingly, as Alexander's wife once I was "no longer in the picture."

The room spun around me. This wasn't a momentary weakness, a simple affair. This was calculated. Planned. My replacement had been contracted and signed for like a business acquisition.

I grabbed my phone with numb fingers and photographed each page, my photographer's hands steady despite the earthquake in my heart.

By morning, I'd composed myself enough to meet Alexander in the kitchen as he prepared his usual black coffee. The man I'd worshipped for eight years, who'd given me everything when I had nothing—he stood before me a stranger.

"We need to talk," I said, pushing my phone toward him, the contract photos displayed on the screen.

He didn't even look surprised. Just annoyed, as if I'd pointed out a minor scheduling conflict.

"It's a business contingency, nothing more," he said, his voice flat. "Every successful man needs backup plans."

"A backup wife?" My voice cracked. "Alexander, please. Just tell me the truth."

He set down his coffee cup with deliberate care. "The truth, Isabella, is that you're overreacting to something you don't understand." His eyes hardened. "I'd hate to have to withdraw support for your little exhibition over a misunderstanding."

The threat hung in the air between us, clear and cold. My exhibition—my first real chance at professional recognition—dangled like bait, reminding me of just how completely he controlled every aspect of my life.

In that moment, looking into the eyes of the man I'd loved with every fiber of my being, I realized I'd never really known him at all.
