Chapter 3

I woke long before dawn, pulled from sleep not by routine or sound, but by the moon itself—thinning, yet powerful enough to reach into my chest and wrench me awake like it always had. I didn’t cry. There was no familiar ache this time. Only uneven breaths, short and sharp, as though the wolf inside me had grown tired of being trapped in skin that felt too brittle, too soft, too human. My flesh tingled, veins vibrating with a restless energy that felt older than memory.

I splashed my face with cool water, tied my hair back neatly, and pressed balm to my lips—not to look pretty, but to disguise myself. A cover. Something that said alive enough, harmless enough. The meek Luna they thought I still was. Beneath it all, though, my wolf paced, silent and watchful, lips curled back from unseen fangs.

I bent down and reached beneath the bed.

That was where my real life waited—inside a scuffed red suitcase, battered at the edges, steeped in the scent of escape. Freedom. Blood. Moonlight. I dragged it out and opened it just a fraction. Stacks of cash greeted me, money gathered quietly over years. They believed it came from selling pastries and bread, but that was only part of the truth. People paid more than they needed to. Some instinct in them—however dulled—recognized something dangerous in me.

There was a passport, too. My real name printed clearly across it: Nyx Mira. A name untouched by Thorne. Untainted. Mine.

And a photograph.

Me at eighteen. Smiling too widely, teeth sharp, eyes bright with a wildness that hadn’t yet been trained into submission. Before marriage softened me into silence. Before obedience replaced fire. I closed the suitcase quickly, steadying my breath before my pulse could give me away.

The kitchen sat in darkness, thick with the scent of lemon cleaner and stillness. I filled a pot, set it to boil, cracked eggs, sliced bread. My hands worked without thought, the motions carved so deeply into me they felt ceremonial. Stir. Season. Turn. Serve. Feed.

Then footsteps.

Bare feet against wood.

Her laugh reached me first—sweet, syrupy, laced with poison. Then his voice, low and indulgent, like this place no longer belonged to me at all.

Camille floated into the kitchen wearing one of Thorne’s shirts, buttons undone, hair loose and tangled from sleep that smelled of skin and conquest. Thorne followed close behind, freshly showered, carrying the sharp scent of soap and betrayal. Side by side, they looked newly wed—glowing, satisfied, hungry.

“Coffee,” she said lightly, already settling into command. “His strong. Mine with cream. You remember how he likes it.”

I set the mugs down silently.

Thorne took a sip and smirked, eyes never lifting to acknowledge me. “Make bacon and omelets. Camille likes them the way I do. And don’t oversalt like you used to.” His mouth curled. “She actually takes care of herself.”

Camille leaned back against my counter as though it were hers, triumph shining in her eyes. “Some people prefer not to look like brittle twigs wrapped in misery, sweetheart.”

I smiled then—not out of submission, but because showing teeth was the oldest truth wolves knew. They missed it. They always had.

I cracked more eggs, let the oil hiss, and tuned them out as they reminisced—about the gala, the penthouse, the sheets soaked in champagne and arrogance. I existed to them only as background noise, a presence that lingered longer than desired. They forgot what shadows could do.

The front door slammed open soon after, laughter spilling inside. Julian strode in with Corinne, the twins trailing behind. Corinne flaunted a new purse and matching earrings—“gifts” from Camille—while Julian poured himself wine though the morning was barely awake. The boys lugged in a massive framed photo: the family portrait from the Starview Hotel.

Camille stood at its center.

Alpha Thorne’s hand rested possessively at her waist. My son and his family circled her like satellites around a brighter star.

I was nowhere in the image.

“Nice, right, Grandma?” Nolan said with a crooked grin. “Looks like a proper family.”

“Too bad you weren’t invited,” Ken added, teeth flashing. “Oh—wait. Guess you looked too much like staff.”

The room erupted with laughter. Thorne laughed. Julian laughed. Corinne wiped her eyes. Camille sipped her coffee calmly and said, “Don’t worry, Nyx. I’ll leave a few of my old dresses for you. Some perfume too. They’re a little tight on me now, but maybe you can manage.”

Thorne snorted. “You can dress a corpse in silk—it’s still dead. And she smells like failure.”

I said nothing. I cleared plates, washed them slowly, and stared out the window at the lemon tree blooming next door. They believed this was my ending. They believed I had nothing left.

They had never seen me stop asking to belong.

---

That night, when the wine bottles were empty and the house finally slept, I stood alone beneath the portrait. Hung high like something sacred, it glared down at me—Camille radiant in my place, Thorne gazing at her as though she were his salvation.

I didn’t hear him until his voice cut through the dark.

“Still jealous?” he scoffed. “You look at that picture like it’s supposed to feel sorry for you.”

I stayed silent.

He laughed bitterly. “If I could redo my life, I’d have left you rotting wherever I found you. I should’ve chosen Camille. She knows how to stand beside an Alpha. She knows when to stay quiet.”

Still, I said nothing. Silence sharpens patience. Silence hunts.

Anger flared at my stillness. He kicked my knee hard, pain bursting through me—but instead of collapsing, something inside me loosened. Uncoiled. He turned away, disgusted. “You’re too old for drama.”

His phone rang. His voice softened instantly. “Hey, beautiful,” he said, young again. “Yeah, I’m packing. Just you and me. Open water.”

I stayed where I was—not because I was weak, but because what shook through me wasn’t pain.

It was awakening.

Power surged beneath my skin, ancient and feral, pressing against years of restraint. My breath tore from my chest, my nails cut into my palms, my teeth ached with a need that wasn’t human.

They thought they had erased me.

But the moon was rising.

And the wolf in my blood had never forgotten who she was.

They were wrong.
