Chapter 1

Elena Vitale stood outside the brownstone she used to call home and told herself she wasn’t shaking.

She was lying.

Seven years, and the building hadn’t changed… same wrought iron gate, same ivy crawling up the brick like it was trying to hide something. The only difference was her. Thinner. Older. Carrying a folder full of hospital bills instead of hope.

“You can still turn around,” she whispered to herself. “Nobody’s watching.”

Someone was always watching. That was the first thing Dominic ever taught her about this world.

She pressed the buzzer before her nerve gave out.

The door opened, not to a guard, not to a maid, but to Dominic Salvatore himself, and God, the sight of him nearly knocked the air out of her lungs.

He filled the doorway the way he filled every room. Dark suit, no tie, sleeves rolled to the forearm like he’d been interrupted mid thought. His jaw was sharper now. His eyes are colder.

But underneath the ice, for half a second, she saw something crack.

“Elena,” he said quietly, and her name in his mouth sounded like an accusation and a prayer at once.

“Dominic,” she said, lifting her chin, refusing to let her voice betray her. “I need to talk to you.”

“Seven years,” he muttered after a long beat, leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, deceptively casual.

She knew better.

“You show up on my doorstep, and that’s the opening line? I need to talk to you?”

“What did you want me to say?” she asked defensively.

“I don’t know,” he muttered, eyes sweeping over her, slow, deliberate, cataloguing every inch like he was checking for damage. “Hello might’ve been a start. Or sorry.”

“I’m not here to apologize,” she said stubbornly.

“No?” he asked, one dark brow lifting. “Then why are you here, Elena? Because it sure isn’t a social call.”

She hated that he was right. Hated more that her hands were trembling around the folder she clutched to her chest.

“It’s Tony,” she said, the words cracking despite her.

“My brother. He’s in trouble… real trouble, Dominic, the kind that gets people killed, and I didn’t know who else…”

“Who else could clean up a mess with the Castellanos,” he muttered flatly. It wasn’t a question. “So that’s it. Not me you missed. Not this.” He gestured between them, something bitter in the motion. “Just a favor.”

“That’s not…” she started.

“Isn’t it?” he asked, pushing off the doorframe, stepping closer.

She made herself hold her ground even as her pulse hammered.

“You vanish for seven years. No calls. No letters. Just a note on my nightstand and a ring you didn’t want. And now you’re back because your brother needs my help.”

“I know how it looks,” she said, embarrassed.

“Do you?” he muttered, his voice dropping, quiet and lethal, more dangerous than shouting ever could be.

“Because from where I’m standing, it looks like the only reason Elena Vitale ever comes back is when she needs something from the man she left in pieces.”

The words landed like a slap. She felt her eyes sting and hated herself for it. Hated that seven years hadn’t been enough to build a wall thick enough to keep him out.

“I never meant to hurt you,” she whispered.

“You didn’t mean to,” he muttered, laughing, short and humorless. “That’s almost worse.”

Silence stretched between them, thick with everything unsaid. Somewhere down the hallway, a clock ticked. She could hear her own heartbeat competing with it.

“Dominic, please,” she pleaded, hating the plea in her voice, hating needing him this much. “Tony borrowed money from the wrong people. Fifty thousand, and it’s ballooned to nearly triple with interest. Giovanni Castellano’s men gave him until the end of the month, and if he doesn’t pay…”

“They’ll kill him,” he muttered grimly. “I know how Giovanni operates.”

“You can talk to him,” she said, hope creeping into her voice. “Erase the debt, broker something. I don’t know, but you’re the only one with that kind of power.”

“And in exchange?” he asked coolly.

Her stomach dropped. “What?” she asked.

“You heard me,” he muttered, circling her slowly, like a predator deciding whether the meal was worth the trouble. “You’re asking me for a favor that’ll cost me leverage, reputation, maybe more with the Castellanos than you realize. So tell me, Elena. What exactly are you offering in return?”

“I don’t have money, if that’s what…” she said, trailing off.

“I don’t want your money,” he muttered, his voice low, rough at the edges. “I want you.”

The two words hit harder than any threat could have.

“Excuse me?” she asked, stunned.

“You heard me perfectly,” he said, stopping in front of her, close enough that she had to tilt her head back to hold his gaze. Close enough she could smell the same cedar and smoke that used to be home.

“You stay. Here. Under my roof, under my rules. No conditions, no negotiations. That’s my price. Take it, or leave your brother to the Castellanos.”

“You can’t be serious,” she said arrogantly, folding her arms like it might armor her.

“I have never been more serious in my life,” he muttered.

Her heart slammed against her ribs. Every rational part of her screamed to walk away, to find another solution, any solution that didn’t involve moving back into the orbit of a man who could still unravel her with a single look. But Tony’s face flashed in her mind… bruised, terrified, begging her not to let them hurt him… and she knew there was no other choice.

“Fine,” she said, the word tasting like surrender. “I’ll stay. But this is a transaction, Dominic. Nothing more.”

Something flickered across his face. Was that hurt? Gone too fast to be sure.

“A transaction,” he muttered, testing the word like it was foreign on his tongue. “Sure. Let’s call it that.”

He stepped back and gestured for her to enter. She forced her feet to move past him into the foyer, which still smelled faintly of espresso and old money, and, if she wasn’t mistaken, something faintly scorched.

“Is something burning?” she asked, wrinkling her nose.

“That would be Marco’s cooking,” Dominic said, almost managing a smile. “The man can break a kneecap without blinking and somehow still cannot make toast.”

A man appeared from the shadows near the staircase, mid-forties, broad shouldered, eyes sharp with a wariness that seemed aimed entirely at her, and carrying a smoking pan like it had personally betrayed him.

“It was one time,” Marco muttered, mostly to the pan.

“Marco,” Dominic said, his voice carrying easy authority, “get Elena’s things from the car. And put that out before you set off the smoke alarm again.”

Marco’s gaze flicked to Elena, and for one unguarded second, something passed behind his eyes, not suspicion exactly, but something closer to guilt. It was there and gone before she could name it.

“Of course, sir,” he muttered. He didn’t look at her again as he set down the pan and moved past, but his shoulders were rigid, his steps too fast for a man simply fetching luggage.

Elena frowned, watching him go. “Does he not like me, or…?” she asked.

“Marco doesn’t like anyone,” Dominic muttered, his tone light, but his eyes tracked his aide down the hall with something unreadable. “Don’t take it personally. He once glared at a fruit basket for a full minute before he trusted it.”

She wanted to laugh. She wanted to believe him more. But the way Marco’s hand had trembled slightly on the pan handle, the way he’d avoided her eyes like he was afraid of what she might see in his… that wasn’t nothing.

That was the reaction of a man carrying a secret he’d buried seven years ago and prayed would never claw its way back to the surface.

Elena had no idea yet how right she was.

“Elena,” Dominic said, pulling her back, and when she turned, he was closer than she expected, dark eyes searching hers with an intensity that stole her breath.

“One more thing you should know before you settle in.”

“What’s that?” she asked warily.

His lips curved, not quite a smile. Something older. Something possessive. Something that promised this arrangement would never stay as simple as a transaction.

“You may be here for your brother’s debt,” he muttered. “But make no mistake, cara… I intend to collect a great deal more than that.”
