Chapter 3

Elena stumbled out of Room 1809 on legs that no longer felt like her own. The luxurious hallway of The Grand Plaza Hotel blurred around her as she pressed a hand against the wall for support. “Never.” That single word from Daniel echoed louder than any scream. Twelve years reduced to one cold admission: he had never loved her. She had been nothing but a convenient placeholder.

The elevator ride down was a haze. She barely registered the pitying glance from the bellboy as she stepped into the glittering lobby. Outside, the cool night air hit her like a slap. Her silk anniversary dress, once chosen with such care, now felt cheap and ridiculous under the streetlights. She wandered the sidewalk aimlessly, heels clicking against pavement, tears finally spilling freely down her cheeks. Passersby stared, but no one stopped. In this city of millions, she had never felt more alone.

How had she been so blind?

Hours seemed to pass in minutes. By the time she hailed a taxi back to the penthouse, the clock on her phone read 3:17 a.m. The driver kept glancing at her in the rearview mirror but said nothing. She paid him with trembling hands and stepped into the building that had been her home for twelve years.

The moment the elevator doors opened onto their private floor, the emptiness hit her like a physical force. The penthouse was silent. The anniversary candles she had left burning had long since guttered out, leaving trails of hardened wax on the dining table. The lamb roast sat cold and congealed, a mocking reminder of her devotion.

She kicked off her heels and walked through the familiar rooms. Something felt wrong. The staff, usually discreet and invisible, moved differently tonight. The housekeeper, Mrs. Lang, avoided her eyes as she passed in the hallway, muttering something under her breath to the young maid beside her. Elena caught fragments: “…poor thing… knew it was coming… mistress has been around for years…”

Whispers. They already knew.

Humiliation burned hot in her chest. Even the servants had seen what she had refused to. She had spent years treating them kindly, remembering birthdays, ensuring they were well-paid from the household budget she managed. Now they looked at her with a mix of pity and detachment, as if she were already a ghost haunting a house that was no longer hers.

She collapsed onto the sofa, staring at the divorce papers Daniel had thrust at her in the hotel. Her signature was still missing. Part of her wanted to tear them to shreds. Another part, the exhausted, defeated part, wondered if resistance was pointless.

Morning came too soon. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the luxurious space that suddenly felt like a prison. Elena forced herself to shower and change into a simple blouse and skirt. She needed support. Surely Daniel’s family would listen. They had always been polite to her, even if distant. They were her in-laws, after all. Family.

She drove to the Thompson family estate on the outskirts of the city, her hands gripping the wheel until her knuckles turned white. The grand mansion loomed ahead, its manicured gardens and imposing gates a symbol of the world she had tried so hard to belong to.

The butler showed her into the sitting room where Daniel’s mother, Margaret Thompson, sat with perfect posture on an antique sofa. His father, Richard, stood by the window, nursing a glass of scotch despite the early hour. They didn’t offer her tea or a seat.

“Elena,” Margaret said coolly, not rising. “We’ve already spoken with Daniel.”

Elena’s heart sank. “Then you know… about Sophia. About the child.”

Richard turned, his face stern and unyielding. “A man like Daniel has needs. You failed to provide him with an heir in twelve years. What did you expect? That he would remain faithful to a barren wife forever?”

The words stabbed deep. She had tried, God, how she had tried. Countless doctor visits, fertility treatments she had hidden from everyone, even Sophia. All for nothing.

Margaret sighed dramatically, adjusting the pearls at her neck. “You were never really one of us, dear. Nice enough, obedient, but lacking… substance. Sophia comes from a better background. She understands our world. She already gave Daniel a son. We will support him fully in this.”

Elena felt the ground shift beneath her. “But I’m your daughter-in-law. I dedicated my life to this family, ”

“You were a placeholder,” Margaret interrupted sharply. “Daniel deserves better. Sign the papers quietly, Elena. There’s no need for scandal. We’ll ensure you receive a small settlement, enough to start over somewhere modest. Fighting us would be foolish. You have no resources, no powerful allies. You never did.”

The rejection was absolute. No comfort. No defense of the woman who had hosted their dinners, endured their subtle digs about her “common” origins, and sacrificed her own family ties for their approval. They had already chosen sides. They had probably known about Sophia all along.

She left the estate in a daze, driving back to the penthouse on autopilot. When she arrived, the whispers among the staff had grown bolder. The head housekeeper approached her in the foyer, expression professionally blank.

“Ma’am, Mr. Thompson has instructed us to begin packing your personal belongings. Only the items you brought into the marriage, of course. Everything else remains with the household.”

Personal belongings. A few old photo albums. Some clothes from before her marriage. Nothing of real value. The jewelry Daniel had given her over the years? “Gifts,” he had called them, but they were purchased with his money and thus his property under the prenup. The car she drove? Leased in his name. Even the designer bags and shoes she owned were technically part of the household assets.

She owned nothing.

Panic clawed at her throat as she rushed to their shared bedroom, the bedroom where she had slept alone more nights than she could count. Drawers were already being emptied by silent maids. Her closet looked half-gutted. She pulled out her old laptop and logged into their joint accounts, heart pounding.

Everything was frozen. Her access revoked. The savings she had once contributed from her pre-marriage job had long been transferred and commingled under his control. The “joint” accounts were in his name only. She had no credit cards in her own right, no investments, no hidden nest egg. Twelve years of marriage, and she was financially naked.

A notification pinged on her phone. A gossip blog post had just gone live: “Thompson Heir Spotted with Mystery Beauty, Is the Perfect Marriage Crumbling?” Photos showed Daniel and Sophia at a cozy café earlier that morning, Liam between them, looking every bit the happy family. Comments flooded in from their social circle:

“Always knew she was out of her league…”

“Poor Elena, but honestly, she never fit in.”

“Sophia is stunning. They look perfect together.”

The public humiliation had begun. Friends who had attended her anniversary parties, who had praised her hosting skills and envied her “fairy-tale” life, were already turning. Messages trickled in, some pitying, most distancing themselves. No one offered real support. She was tainted now. The discarded wife.

Later that afternoon, a knock sounded at the door. Elena opened it to find Sophia standing there, dressed in an elegant cream blouse and tailored pants, looking radiant and composed. In her hands was a small gift bag, pretending kindness.

“Elena, darling,” Sophia cooed, stepping inside without invitation. “I came to check on you. This must be so hard.”

Elena stared at her former best friend, the woman who had smiled while stabbing her in the back. “Why are you here, Sophia?”

Sophia set the bag down, some expensive skincare products, no doubt chosen to highlight Elena’s “tired” appearance. She sighed theatrically. “I feel terrible about how you found out. But really, you should have seen the signs. Daniel and I… we’ve been inevitable for years. You were sweet, but let’s be honest, you were never enough for a man like him. Too ordinary. Too willing to fade into the background.”

The subtle insults landed like precise cuts. “I trusted you,” Elena whispered.

“And that was your mistake,” Sophia replied lightly, though her eyes gleamed with triumph. “But don’t worry. Once the divorce is final, we’ll make sure you’re taken care of in a… appropriate way. Maybe a small apartment on the outskirts. You can rebuild a simple life. It’s for the best.”

Elena’s fists clenched at her sides. The rage was building now, mixing with the despair. This woman had taken everything, her husband, her trust, her future, and still had the audacity to play the gracious victor.

As Sophia turned to leave, she paused at the door. “Oh, and Daniel asked me to remind you about the papers. Sign them soon. The announcement of our engagement will come next week. It’ll be a beautiful wedding. Liam is so excited to have his parents together openly.”

The door clicked shut behind her.

Elena sank to the floor, the weight of isolation crushing her. No family support. No friends. No money. No home. She had been stripped of everything, her dignity, her identity, her security, all in a single devastating day.

Her phone buzzed again. A courier notification. The official divorce papers had been delivered to the penthouse, along with a formal notice from Daniel’s lawyers demanding she vacate the premises within forty-eight hours.

She was being thrown out.

Tears streamed down her face as she clutched the documents. The pain was unbearable, a black void threatening to swallow her whole. In that moment of utter despair, a single thought crystallized in her mind, sharp and vengeful:

If she could start over… she would destroy them all.
