Chapter 3

EVELYN'S POV

Cayden didn't even look at me at first. He kept his eyes on Adrian, like a man sizing up a rival at a board meeting.

"She's not going home with me?" He laughed, short and ugly. "You don't get to make that call."

"Neither do you," Adrian said.

Cayden's gaze finally cut past him and found me on the bottom step. It moved over my bare feet and my old sweater, then flicked back to the jacket on the bannister. I watched his jaw lock.

"How long, Evie?"

"How long what?"

"Don't play dumb. How long have you been talking to him?" He stepped onto the threshold, close enough that Adrian shifted his weight. "Because you don't walk out on eight years and end up with Adrian Blackwood in your father's hallway by breakfast. Nobody moves on in one night. Not unless they were already halfway out the door."

I stared at him.

This was the man who had stood under studio lights twelve hours ago and told the world he'd loved another woman for a decade. And he was the one standing here asking me about betrayal.

It wasn't hypocrisy, not to him. It was just the order of things. He was allowed to want more. I was only allowed to wait.

"You really believe that," I said.

"I believe what I'm looking at."

"Then look carefully."

I came down the last step and crossed the hall until I was standing beside Adrian. He didn't reach for me. He didn't need to.

I kept my eyes on Cayden when I said it.

"Adrian. I accept the engagement."

The hallway went silent. Cayden's mouth opened and closed. Adrian turned his head toward me slowly, and something in his face went very still, the way people go still when they've waited too long to trust a thing in front of them.

"Okay," he said quietly.

Then he shut the door.

---

Two days later, the Blackwood Foundation Gala filled the ballroom of the Langford Hotel with candlelight and money.

I'd been to this gala five times. Every year, I'd ridden in a separate car and slipped in through a side entrance twenty minutes after Cayden, then spent the night at a table near the back with his junior executives' wives. He'd find me once, usually by the coat check, squeeze my hand, and say, "Almost done, babe."

Tonight I came in through the front doors.

I'd barely made it past the champagne tower when I saw them.

Cayden was in black tie, freshly shaved, looking like he'd slept just fine. Vanessa was on his arm in pale gold silk, her hair pinned up, smiling at the photographers like she'd been practicing for years. Maybe she had.

Heads turned toward them. A few turned toward me after that, then back. I could practically hear the whispers. *Isn't that the girlfriend? The one who was always around?*

Vanessa spotted me and changed direction. Cayden let her steer him.

"Evelyn." She said my name warmly, like we were old friends meeting at brunch. "I didn't think you'd come. That's brave of you."

"Is it?"

"Honestly, I think it's healthy." She tilted her head. "I want you to know I don't mind that you're still processing. Eight years is a long time to be someone's... routine."

Cayden cleared his throat. "Vanessa."

"What? I'm being nice." She curled both hands around his arm and pressed closer, her shoulder fitting against him like it had always belonged there. "I just think it's a relief, isn't it? No more pretending. At least now everyone finally knows who he really loves."

She looked at me as she said it. Waiting for my face to crack.

I'd spent five years answering her emails about his schedule. I'd sent her a gift basket when her mother had surgery. I'd thanked her for reminding him about my birthday.

I didn't answer her now. I didn't even look at Cayden.

Because over her shoulder, the crowd had started to part.

---

My father was not a tall man, but rooms always seemed to make space for him. He came across the ballroom in a charcoal tuxedo, silver hair combed back, ignoring three people who tried to catch his attention. A photographer lifted his camera and then lowered it again, unsure.

Richard Hartwell hadn't attended a public event in over a year.

He stopped in front of me and held out his arm.

"There you are, sweetheart. They've been holding our seats."

His eyes moved briefly to Cayden. Nothing in his expression changed, but Cayden took a half step back like he'd been pushed.

"Mr. Hartwell," Cayden said. "I didn't know you'd be here."

"No," my father said. "You wouldn't have."

He tucked my hand into the crook of his elbow and walked me away.

I felt the shift behind us before I heard it. The whispers changed pitch. A woman near the bar actually said, "Hartwell? As in *Hartwell Capital*?" loudly enough to carry. Someone else said, "I thought she was just Sherman's girlfriend."

My father guided me straight to the head table, the one beneath the foundation's crest, and pulled out my chair himself. The cameras that had been trained on Cayden and Vanessa swung toward us in a slow wave.

"You didn't have to do this," I murmured.

"I've wanted to do this for eight years." He sat beside me and unfolded his napkin. "You asked me to stay out of it. I stayed out of it. You're not asking anymore."

A reporter edged close to the table. "Mr. Hartwell, is this your daughter? There's been talk that she was cut off after she chose a relationship with Cayden Sherman..."

My father didn't raise his voice. "Evelyn has been the sole heir to Hartwell Capital since the day she was born. Nobody cut her off. She chose to live quietly. That's her right."

The reporter's pen stopped moving.

I knew the story they'd all believed, because I'd heard it repeated at parties when people thought I wasn't listening. The girl who'd thrown away her family for love. The girl who had nothing without Cayden, which was why she'd put up with so much.

Cayden had never corrected it. I'd always assumed he didn't know it was going around.

Across the room, I found him. He was standing exactly where I'd left him, Vanessa still attached to his arm, but his face had gone a shade too pale under the chandeliers. His eyes met mine.

And then, slowly, I watched him recover. His shoulders squared. His mouth settled into something almost like a smirk.

I knew that look. I'd seen it a hundred times across a dinner table, right before he told me I was overreacting. He'd decided this was a performance. A daughter borrowing her father's name to make an ex regret something. He'd let me have my moment, and when I was done, I'd come back.

He lifted his glass toward me, just slightly. A small, patient toast.

*I see what you're doing.*

Then a hand settled on the back of my chair.

I didn't have to turn around. I'd know the weight of it anywhere now, after two days.

Adrian stepped up beside me in a black tuxedo, no bow tie, the collar open just enough to make the board members' wives look twice. The gala carried his family's name, and every camera in the room had been waiting for him to appear.

He held out his hand to me.

I took it and stood.

He didn't lead me anywhere. He just turned us both to face the room, the photographers, the donors, the man across the floor with a raised glass and a frozen smile.

"Since everyone seems so curious tonight," Adrian said, and his voice carried without effort, "let me introduce her properly."

His fingers tightened around mine.

"Evelyn Hartwell. My fiancée."

The ballroom exploded into sound. Flashes went off so fast the air turned white.

Through all of it, I watched Cayden.

His glass had stopped halfway to his mouth. It just hung there in his hand, champagne trembling at the rim, while Vanessa tugged at his sleeve and said something he didn't hear.

He wasn't looking at me anymore. He was looking at Adrian.

Because Cayden had been there for all of it. The charity auction six years ago. The New Year's party. The terrace last spring. Three times Adrian Blackwood had asked me, and three times Cayden had stood close enough to see it happen. He'd laughed about it afterward, his arm around my waist.

*Poor guy. He'll be waiting forever.*

Now he finally understood what that meant.

Adrian had never stopped waiting.
