Chapter 2

My thumb hovered over Rafael Ambramov and every muscle in my body trembled. I had sworn I would never call him. Ever. I had promised myself I would live and die in the small, careful life I had built with Clinton, even when it was empty and full of poison. But this was not about promises. This was about Clyde.

“R-rafael… it's me, Savannah.”

“Savannah,” he said, slowly as if tasting the name.

“Please, Rafael. Please. It is Clyde. My son. He has been taken! They want a billion. Please, help me.”

He chuckled, “You called me because you are desperate.” His voice did not rise. It did not plead. It simply examined me, weighing. “I am in New York. Expanding. I own more than you can imagine. One hundred corporations. Assets that feed nations. Why would I help the woman who left me for gold?”

I felt the memory like a slap to the face. Eight years ago, before the white roses and the contract, before the marriage that had been a bargain and a sentence, Rafael and I had believed something true and magical. We had loved in the way the young mistake honesty for forever. I remember a rain that smelled like iron, his hand callused from work I did not understand, the way he held me like the world could be rebuilt with the force of his hands.

I remember the night my father’s men dragged him into the alley and beat him until his words were broken stones. And then he begged me not to marry Clinton but if I refused my father would not stop at him. He will kill him including his mother and sister.

I remember the promise ring in my palm, the metal warm from his body. He grabbed my feet and begged me to run with him. I really wanted too but I knew my father well. So I chose safety instead. I told him he was poor and could not feed me in the way the future demanded. I told him he smelled of mud and debt, and I threw the ring into the mud. He picked it up and cried. He said one word that kept echoing in me: why. Then I walked away.

“Do you remember that night?” Rafael said now, voice thin and controlled. “You left me in the rain, Savannah. You chose a life that fed you but poisoned you as well. You made your bed.”

“I know,” I said. I wanted to tell him I had been wrong for a thousand small reasons, that every night since had been an act of repentance. But there were no speeches for this. There was only the sound of my son being hurt in a video and the knowledge that Clinton did not care.

“Tell me everything,” Rafael said finally, “Fast. Do not lie.”

I spilled it, words tripping over themselves. The frozen account. The ransom deadline. Every piece, offered like a bribe.

There was a cold silence on the line that stretched and stretched until I thought my voice would crack.

“You expect me to move across continents because your husband is a monster and your former choices came back to bite you. Why would I do that, Savannah? What is there for me in saving a child that you raise in a gilded cage?”

I closed my eyes and saw Rafael on the pier in my memory, his hands rough on my face, the city behind us like a promise.

“My plea should be enough,” I whispered.

“It is not enough.” He said it plainly. “You broke me. You sold me out to buy safety. If I save him, what will I gain from the woman who chose her own grave? How can you pay me?”

My mouth went dry. He was dangerous in a way words could not hold. His name alone had made men change alliances. He had a reputation for cutting what he thought belonged to him out of other people’s lives and keeping it. He could move continents with a phone call and bend cops like paper clips. He could make nightmares feel like laws.

“Me,” I said, “You can have me. I will pay with my body. Use me. Hurt me. Make me a slave or your maid. Make me do whatever you want. Just save my son.”

I heard him breathe, a small sound like someone opening a book. For a second I expected laughter, the end of the line. Instead he said, calm and cold “Consider it done. After I save your son, you will belong to me again. Body, soul, everything you denied me before.”

Tears burned down my cheeks. I had not thought myself capable of bargaining like this, of offering myself in exchange for the life tied to my blood. But there was a raw, terrible clarity in the exchange. I had chosen safety once and paid for it with a heart. I could choose differently now.

“I agree. Do it. Please, Rafael. Please bring him back.”

“Good,” he said. “Do not call me again unless you wish to honor this bargain.”

The line went dead.

They dragged me out after eight hours. One of Clinton’s men shoved me toward the car and said flatly, “Boss said go home. Cook food right away.”

Cook food. Like I had not just been locked in a storage room while my son screamed in a video.

Then my phone buzzed. A message. Rafael. He sent me a location, the name of a hospital, the room number.
