Chapter 5

Cole didn't shove Julian. He simply released his wrist, but the sudden absence of pressure sent Julian stumbling back two full steps against the open iron grate of the elevator shaft.

Julian rubbed his red, bruised forearm, his chest rising and falling in ragged heaves. His eyes burned with venom as he looked between Cole and me.

I didn't give him time to regain his balance.

I reached down to the kitchen island, picked up the thick manila folder Marcus had messaged over before sunrise, and walked directly toward him.

"Take it," I said, holding out the papers.

Julian looked down at the header stamped in bold legal black: *PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.*

"Are you out of your mind?" Julian spat, refusing to touch the folder. "You think you can throw six years down the drain because of a single misunderstanding?"

"It wasn't a misunderstanding," I said, stepping into his space until the edge of the paper brushed his lapel. "It was six years of me building your reputation while you slept with an associate in our home. Take the agreement, Julian. Sign it, or let the court unseal the offshore ledgers."

A dark, mocking sneer twisted his mouth.

Julian snatched the papers from my hand. For a fraction of a second, I thought he might actually look at the terms.

Instead, he gripped the stack with both hands and ripped it down the center.

The heavy bond paper tore with a sharp, violent sound. He folded the halves together and ripped them again, showering the white fragments across the dark concrete floor.

"You're being hysterical," Julian said, his voice dropping into that familiar, patronizing cadence he used whenever I challenged him in board meetings. "You're hurt. You're exhausted. You're letting your emotions dictate your life. I am not signing a damn thing, Sloane. You belong at home, and when you calm down, we'll talk like adults."

Before I could answer, a loud vibration buzzed sharply against the silence.

Julian's phone lit up from his breast pocket. The ringtone blared, cutting through the loft.

He reached inside on instinct, pulling the device out to silence it.

I caught the illuminated screen clearly in the morning light.

*Vanessa.*

Julian didn't hit decline. He stared at the caller ID, his thumb hovering over the screen, and then—incredibly, reflexively—he slid the green bar to answer.

"Vanessa, I told you I'm handling this," he snapped into the receiver, turning slightly away from me. "Don't call this line right now. Go back to the penthouse and wait."

He tapped the screen to end the call and jammed the phone back into his pocket, not even realizing what he had just done.

The last microscopic trace of warmth inside me died.

Six years of shared breakfasts, late-night strategy sessions, holiday dinners with his family, and quiet promises in the dark vanished. In the middle of trying to bully his wife into submission, his first instinct was still to reassure his mistress.

I didn't feel anger. I felt entirely free.

"She's stressed," Julian said, looking back at me without a hint of shame. "She doesn't handle legal pressure well. That doesn't change anything between us."

He glanced past my shoulder, glaring at Cole, who stood motionless five feet behind me.

"And you," Julian said, pointing an aggressive finger at Cole's chest. "Get the hell out of here. This is a private matter between a husband and his wife. We don't need a bodyguard sticking his nose into marital business."

Julian took a step forward, trying to reassert his authority. "Wait in the alley, Mercer. Let real people talk."

Cole didn't raise a fist. He didn't speak.

Instead, Cole took one single step backward.

He didn't make the decision for me. He didn't step in front of me like I was a fragile object that needed saving. He stepped out of my direct line of sight, giving me the floor entirely, his dark eyes fixed on me with complete, unyielding trust.

Julian smirked, mistaking Cole's silence for submission. "See? The hired help knows when to back off. Put on some real clothes, Sloane. We're leaving."

"Cole isn't going anywhere," I said, my voice cutting through the space between us like a chilled blade. "And neither am I."

Julian let out a harsh, incredulous breath. "You think you have leverage here? You had your fun throwing a fit. But you're coming home, or I will tie you up in court until you don't have a penny left in your personal trust."

I looked at him, feeling an almost detached pity for how blind he was.

"You really don't know what happened this morning, do you?" I asked quietly.

Julian frowned, his brow furrowing. "What are you talking about?"

"Northstar Capital didn't just freeze your operating lines, Julian," I said, keeping my gaze steady on his uncomprehending face. "At eight-fifteen, our executive board executed a total suspension on all debt guarantees for the Prescott Group's downtown skyscraper project."

The color drained from Julian's face so fast it looked like he had been struck.

"What?" he whispered, his voice cracking.

"The eight hundred million in syndicated construction loans," I continued, speaking with the clear, rhythmic precision of a financial executioner. "The ones backed entirely by Northstar's credit covenant. With our guarantee revoked, your lenders are issuing a margin call. You have until four o'clock tomorrow afternoon to produce two hundred and forty million in liquid collateral, or your lenders move to foreclose on the site."

Julian staggered back another step, his mouth opening and closing in sheer panic.

"You... you can't do that," he stammered, his fingers trembling as he tried to grasp the magnitude of the disaster. "That tower is sixty percent built! If the site defaults, the entire firm goes under. My family's equity is wiped out!"

Then, as expected, his panic turned straight into contempt.

"You ran crying to your father," Julian snarled, his voice rising in pitch. "You went running to Arthur like a spoiled little girl, begging him to destroy my business because you caught me with someone else! You think that makes you strong? You're hiding behind your father's checkbook!"

"My father is in London, Julian," I replied evenly. "He hasn't even seen the morning news."

Julian froze.

"I hold sixty percent of the voting proxy on Northstar's credit risk committee," I said, closing the distance between us until I was looking up into his wide, panicked eyes. "I drafted the covenant three years ago when we secured the land. I knew every vulnerability in your capital structure because I was the one who built it for you. Arthur didn't sign the suspension order. I did."

Julian stared at me as if seeing me for the very first time.

The woman who had quietly organized his schedules, fixed his presentations, and smoothed over his boardroom conflicts was gone. Standing in front of him was the architect of his entire empire, and she had just pulled the foundation out from beneath his feet.

Behind me, the laser printer beside the workstation let out a quiet chime, feeding three crisp pages into the receiving tray.

I turned around, walked to the printer, and picked up the fresh copy of the divorce petition.

I laid the document flat on the high marble island. Beside it, I unscrewed the cap of a sleek black rollerball pen.

Julian watched, completely paralyzed, as I bent over the counter.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't tremble.

With a sharp, fluid stroke, I signed my legal name across the petitioner line, dating it with the exact time.

I picked up the pen and the paperwork, turned back to Julian, and shoved the pages hard against his chest.

"This time, don't tear it," I said, my voice dropping to a merciless whisper. "My lawyer has ten copies."
