Chapter 3

"You're not sleeping in here," I said, my voice tight as I stayed rooted in the doorway.

Cole didn't argue. He didn't even look up from unlacing his tactical boots.

He kicked them into the corner, reached onto the mattress, and grabbed the second pillow and the heavy charcoal blanket. With a single flick of his wrist, he tossed the pillow onto the bare hardwood beside the adjoining bathroom door, dropping the blanket right over it.

"There," Cole said, his tone entirely level. "Problem solved."

I stood there, feeling an odd jolt of friction in my chest.

Part of me had braced for a smirk, a sharp comment, or the arrogant confidence he carried when we were younger. I had prepared an entire defense to shut down whatever boundary he tried to push. Instead, his complete detachment left me off balance, like stepping onto a stair that wasn't there.

"You can take the sofa in the living room," I said.

"The sofa doesn't have a clear sightline to the emergency fire escape or the bathroom window," he answered, stripping off his dark button-down shirt. Underneath, he wore a fitted black compression tee that clung to the broad frame of his chest and shoulders. "If someone breaches this unit, I need to be between them and you. Take the bed, Sloane. Get some sleep."

He turned off the overhead light, leaving only the dim ambient glow of the city filtering through the high industrial windows.

Cole stretched out on the floor, his back resting against the wall and his right hand resting flat near his holstered weapon.

I took off my coat, set my bag on the nightstand, and climbed onto the mattress. The sheets were crisp and smelled faintly of clean laundry and cedar. I pulled the duvet up to my chin, staring at the high, exposed beams of the ceiling.

An hour passed. Then two.

The rhythmic drumming of heavy rain against the glass did nothing to quiet my pulse. Every time I shut my eyes, I saw Vanessa in Julian’s shirt. I saw Julian’s unbothered, entitled face telling me I was throwing a tantrum.

Down on the floor, Cole shifted slightly, the quiet rustle of the wool blanket cutting through the dark.

"Cole?" I whispered.

"I'm awake," he replied instantly, his voice low and raspy.

I rolled onto my side, looking over the edge of the mattress. He was lying flat on his back, staring up at the same ceiling.

"Why didn't you finish it?" I asked.

The question had sat inside me for twelve years, buried under college degrees, career moves, and a six-year marriage built on strategic convenience.

"The night by the lake," I continued, the words slipping out before I could censor them. "Before you shipped out. You had my shirt half-undone. You knew I wasn't stopping you. Then you just... stopped."

Silence hung between us for so long that I thought he was going to ignore me.

Then Cole turned his head, his dark eyes catching the faint gray light from the window.

"You were shaking," he said quietly.

"I was nervous."

"You were twenty, and you were scared because you thought giving me that would make me stay," Cole said, his voice dropping an octave, steady and mercilessly honest. "I was leaving for boot camp at five in the morning. If I had stayed in that truck, I would have taken something from you that you were only offering out of panic."

My throat tightened. "You didn't want to?"

"I wanted you so badly I couldn't breathe, Sloane," he said, the words hitting the quiet room like a physical impact. "Which is exactly why I stopped. Because you deserved to wake up knowing you chose it."

I stared at him through the gloom, my chest aching with an intensity I wasn't prepared for.

Before I could answer, the screen of my phone lit up on the nightstand.

The vibration buzzed sharply against the wood. Once. Twice. Three times.

Julian’s name flashed across the display.

I reached out and silenced it, but the screen immediately lit up again. He called four times in rapid succession before giving up. A second later, an audio message notification popped up.

I tapped the voicemail icon, keeping the volume low.

Julian’s voice filled the space between the bed and the floor, smooth, controlled, and dripping with condescension.

"Sloane, stop acting like a child and pick up the damn phone. I spoke to your father’s office, and they won't tell me where you are. Listen to me: I told Vanessa to find an apartment. She’s going to move her things out by the end of the week. You come home tomorrow morning, we issue a joint statement squashing whatever rumors your assistant is spreading, and we move on. Don't blow up a ten-figure enterprise over your pride."

The message clicked off.

A hollow laugh scraped past my throat. He honestly believed he was doing me a favor. He thought offering to move his mistress into a separate apartment was a generous compromise.

I opened my social media app, tapping the search bar with numb fingers.

Vanessa’s profile wasn't private. Her story had been uploaded less than fifteen minutes ago.

The photo showed the custom calacatta marble island of my kitchen. Resting on the counter was my favorite ceramic coffee mug, steam curling from the dark roast. In the background, Vanessa’s bare legs were stretched out on my barstool, the early morning skyline visible through our penthouse terrace doors.

Her caption was short: *Midnight tea in my new favorite kitchen.*

Julian hadn't told her to leave. He had given her my home.

Something inside me fractured, cold and absolute. The last lingering trace of grief, of doubt, of six years of loyalty evaporated into thin air.

I sat up, throwing the duvet aside.

Cole was on his feet the second my feet touched the floor, his posture instantly alert. "Sloane?"

I didn't answer him. I grabbed my encrypted laptop from my tote, flipped the lid open, and plugged in the flash drive containing Julian’s financial ledgers.

The screen illuminated my face with sharp blue light.

I opened an email draft addressed to Marcus Vance, my family’s head corporate litigator. I attached the complete offshore banking registry, the unredacted shell company transaction logs, and the scanned copies of Julian’s signature transferring state infrastructure funds.

At the bottom, I typed three lines:

*File the divorce petition at 8:00 AM sharp. Cite irretrievable breakdown and document the financial fraud.*

*Effective immediately, execute Northstar Capital's executive covenant to freeze and suspend all active credit guarantees on the Prescott Group's downtown skyscraper project.*

*Burn him to the ground.*

I hit send.

The progress bar filled, flashed green, and cleared.

Julian’s family company lived on the credit lines my father’s firm guaranteed. By sunrise, their primary funding pipeline would be completely paralyzed.

I snapped the laptop shut and set it on the nightstand.

Cole was watching me from the foot of the bed, his dark eyes sharp, taking in the rigid line of my spine and the absolute stillness in my hands.

"You just cut his throat," Cole said quietly.

I looked down at him, meeting his gaze without a single tremor in my voice.

"I'm not going back."
