Chapter 1

I caught my husband with another woman three days before our anniversary.

He wasn't sorry.

He told me Vanessa “needed him,” then asked me not to destroy our marriage over one mistake.

So I copied everything from his laptop and called a divorce lawyer.

That was when the threats started.

Someone knew what I had taken.

My father hired me a twenty-four-hour bodyguard.

Unfortunately, the man standing outside my bathroom was Cole Mercer, the same man I almost slept with twelve years ago.

Then someone broke into my hotel.

Cole moved me to a safe house.

One bedroom.

One bed.

He slept on the floor.

By morning, I was wearing his shirt when my husband burst through the door.

Julian stared at me.

Then at Cole.

“You slept with him?”

I looked at the man who cheated on me first.

“No.”

Then I picked up my divorce papers.

“But now I know I could.”

***

I had the key turned in the lock before six, two hours ahead of our dinner reservation. In my coat pocket was the vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre watch I had spent three months tracking down for our sixth wedding anniversary.

The penthouse was quiet, save for a low murmur floating from the hallway toward Julian’s private study.

I set my keys on the marble console, stepping silently across the hardwood. I expected him to be on a conference call with London.

Then I heard a woman’s laugh. Soft, familiar, and entirely out of place in our home.

"Julian, stop. The clasp is tiny."

I pushed the heavy oak door open without knocking.

Vanessa stood in the center of the room, wearing Julian’s crisp white dress shirt and nothing else. Her bare thighs caught the evening light from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Julian stood directly behind her, his hands resting at the base of her throat as he fastened a platinum diamond pendant around her neck.

His fingers didn't even jerk when the door hit the stopper.

Julian looked up, meeting my eyes with the mild annoyance of a man interrupted during an administrative task.

"Sloane," he said smoothly. He didn't drop his hands. He finished securing the clasp before stepping back. "You’re home early. Calm down."

"Calm down?" The words came out flat and dry.

"Vanessa’s had a rough few weeks," Julian said, gesturing toward her as if presenting a charitable cause. "Her firm didn't make partner, and she needed someone to talk to. Don't make a scene out of nothing."

Vanessa cast her eyes down, pulling the hem of his shirt lower with a delicate, practiced helplessness. "I'm sorry, Sloane. I shouldn't be here."

"You're wearing my husband's shirt in my study," I said, walking toward Julian's mahogany desk. "There isn't an interpretation of this that makes you a guest."

Julian sighed, running a hand through his styled hair. He walked over to me, lowering his voice into the reasonable, condescending register he used in boardrooms. "Look at me. It's been a few months. That’s all."

I stared at him, feeling the air turn entirely cold. "A few months."

"It doesn't change anything between us," he insisted, catching my wrist. "I still love you. We built an entire life together, Sloane. We run half this city's commercial real estate. Are you really going to ruin a successful marriage over an arrangement that takes nothing away from you?"

I looked down at his hand on my wrist until he let go.

"Step aside, Julian."

"Sloane, be rational."

"I am being rational."

I walked behind his desk and unzipped my leather tote. I pulled my passport and personal files from the bottom drawer, transferring them into my bag.

Julian watched me, crossing his arms with an arrogant smirk. "Go stay at a hotel for the night if you need to throw a tantrum. You'll realize by tomorrow morning that you have too much to lose."

While he turned his head to tell Vanessa to grab her shoes from the guest room, my hand dropped to his open laptop.

I pulled the high-speed flash drive from my pocket and slid it into the side port. With three quick keystrokes, I initiated the background clone of his private financial ledger and shared offshore accounts. The transfer bar raced across the black screen in under ten seconds.

I pulled the drive, slid it into my bra, and snapped my laptop shut, shoving it into my tote.

"Dinner is canceled," I said.

I left the study without looking at either of them.

The elevator ride down to the lobby was a blur of fluorescent light and absolute stillness. I walked out into the cool evening air of the private courtyard, pulling out my phone to hail a car.

Before the app loaded, a text notification lit up my screen from an unknown number.

*File anything, and you won't make it to court.*

I stared at the screen. The message wasn't just a bitter husband's warning. Julian’s family had political ties and private equity muscle that ran deep into the state judiciary, but a direct death threat meant they were already moving to protect his assets.

I didn't panic. I tapped my father's contact.

Arthur Vale answered on the second ring. "Sloane? Aren't you out celebrating?"

"Julian is cheating on me," I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my chest. "I just walked out, and thirty seconds later I got a text threatening my life if I file for divorce."

There was a three-second silence on the other end. When my father spoke again, his tone was completely devoid of warmth.

"Go straight to the St. Jude Hotel. Penthouse suite under my corporate name. Do not take your car. Hail a yellow cab from the street corner."

"Dad, I can handle a lawyer—"

"You're not handling this alone," he interrupted sharply. "I'm sending Mercer. He's in the city. He'll be waiting when you get off the elevator."

Before I could ask which Mercer he meant, the line went dead.

Twenty minutes later, the private elevator of the St. Jude Hotel chimed as it reached the top floor. The brass doors slid open.

Standing directly in the hallway, blocking the path to Suite 1401, was Cole Mercer.

Twelve years had broadened his shoulders and sharpened the line of his jaw, but the cold intensity in his dark eyes hadn't changed at all. He wore a tailored charcoal suit with no tie, the top button undone, a discreet tactical earpiece tucked behind his left ear.

Twelve years ago, on the night before he left for the Marines, we had ended up in the back of his truck by the lake, our clothes half-undone and our mouths bruised before I had panicked and pulled away.

I hadn't seen him since.

Cole didn't flinch as our eyes locked. He reached out, caught the strap of my heavy leather tote, and pulled it off my shoulder.

"Sloane," he said, his deep voice cutting through the quiet corridor.

"Cole." I tightened my coat around myself. "My father said he was sending security. He didn't say it was you."

"I run Mercer Tactical now," he replied, turning the keycard in the suite door and pushing it wide. "Your father pays for the best when someone threatens his daughter."

He stepped inside first, keeping me behind his back while he swept the living room, checking the terrace doors, the closet, and the adjoining bedroom. Every movement was efficient, precise, and completely focused.

He came back to the center of the room, looking down at me. "Your phone stays on airplane mode. No calls without my clearance. You don't open this door, and you don't step out on that terrace."

"I need to take a shower," I said, exhaustion finally settling into my bones like lead. "I need twenty minutes alone."

"You don't get twenty minutes alone," Cole said without hesitation. "Julian's family employs ex-contractors who know how to stage an accident. Until we sweep your accounts and verify the perimeter, you stay in my line of sight."

"I'm not letting you watch me shower, Cole."

"I don't need to watch," he said evenly, stepping over to the master bathroom and checking the window locks inside before turning around. He took up a stance directly beside the bathroom threshold, his shoulder resting against the heavy wooden frame. "Door stays cracked three inches. I stay right here."

I stepped up to the doorway, stopping inches from his chest. The familiar scent of cedar and clean rain drifted off him, uncomfortably sharp against the chaos of my night.

"Are you really going to stand right there?" I asked coldly.

Cole looked down into my eyes, unyielding and completely still.

"Until you're safe, yes."
