Chapter 3

I'd been staring at the ceiling for hours when Quentin's alarm went off at six. He rolled over, silencing it with practiced efficiency, and pressed a perfunctory kiss to my cheek.

"Big day at the golf course," he murmured, his voice still rough with sleep. "Tournament with the guys. Probably won't be back until dinner."

I nodded, playing the role I'd perfected over years of marriage. Supportive wife. Trusting partner. Fool.

"Have fun," I said, watching him select his clothes with unusual care for a casual golf game.

The evidence I'd gathered over the past week burned in my mind: the bank statements showing years of transfers to Layla Grant, the credit card receipts for children's toys and clothes, the prenatal vitamins purchased during my own pregnancy. Each discovery had been a fresh wound, but nothing had prepared me for what I planned to do today.

I waited thirty minutes after Quentin left before getting dressed. Sophie was at a sleepover with her friend from school—a convenient coincidence that spared me from finding childcare for my surveillance mission. I pulled my hair into a tight ponytail and grabbed sunglasses that covered half my face. The woman in the mirror looked nothing like Gabriella Reynolds, perfect wife. She looked like someone with purpose.

Quentin's car was easy to follow—the silver BMW he'd insisted on leasing despite our supposedly tight budget. I maintained a careful distance, grateful for the light Saturday morning traffic. When he bypassed the turnoff for the golf course, confirmation settled like lead in my stomach.

He drove to an upscale neighborhood across town, parking outside a modern apartment building with a manicured courtyard. I found street parking half a block away and watched as he retrieved a gift bag from his trunk before disappearing inside.

Fifteen minutes later, he emerged with Layla and a small boy. The child couldn't have been more than three, with dark curls that matched Quentin's and the same distinctive nose that Sophie had inherited. There was no mistaking the resemblance—this was unmistakably my husband's son.

My hands gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white. I'd known about the affair, about the child, but seeing them together—watching Quentin lift the boy onto his shoulders with practiced ease—made it horrifyingly real. They looked like a family. A happy, normal family heading to the park on a Saturday morning.

I followed at a distance as they walked three blocks to a playground. Through the lens of my phone's camera, I documented it all: Quentin pushing the boy on the swings, the three of them sharing ice cream from a vendor, Layla leaning into Quentin's side as they watched their son climb the jungle gym. The same jungle gym where Quentin had once taught Sophie to overcome her fear of heights.

When Layla kissed him—a casual, familiar gesture that spoke of years of intimacy—I nearly retched. I took the photo anyway, adding it to my growing collection of evidence.

The next day, I met with a private investigator Elena had recommended. Roger Daniels had the weathered look of someone who'd seen too many marriages dissolve from the inside out.

"I need documentation," I told him, sliding the folder of financial records across his desk. "Photos, video, anything that proves he's supporting another household and another child."

Roger nodded, reviewing my preliminary evidence with professional detachment. "Apartment address?"

I provided the details from my reconnaissance, along with Quentin's schedule patterns. "He visits them at least twice a week, usually claiming work events or golf games."

"This won't be cheap," Roger warned.

"Neither was the designer crib he bought for his other child while telling me we couldn't afford it for Sophie." My voice remained steady, surprising even myself. "I'll pay whatever it costs."

Three days later, Roger delivered his first report. Photos of Quentin entering Layla's building with groceries. Documentation of him picking up the boy from daycare. A copy of the lease agreement for the apartment, with Quentin listed as guarantor.

"The place costs $3,200 a month," Roger noted. "Been paying it for four years."

Four years. Before the boy was even born. While I'd been clipping coupons and budgeting for Sophie's needs.

That night, Quentin and I sat across from each other at our dining table, the silence between us thick with unspoken accusations.

"You've been quiet lately," he observed, cutting into his steak. "Everything okay?"

"Just thinking about finances," I replied, watching his expression carefully. "Our expenses seem high for what we actually spend."

His fork paused halfway to his mouth. "What do you mean?"

"Just curious where all our money goes." I took a deliberate sip of wine. "Have you checked our accounts recently?"

Quentin's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "I handle the finances, Gabriella. You've never been interested before."

"Things change."

Later that night, I noticed him changing passwords on his laptop, his movements furtive as he glanced over his shoulder to ensure I wasn't watching. But I was always watching now, collecting each suspicious action like another piece of evidence against him.

The walls of our perfect life were crumbling, and soon, very soon, I would be ready to deliver the final blow.
